CHAPTER 13 — THE BROTHER WHO RETURNED FROM THE SHADOWS

The message remained on the screen.

"EMILY CARTER, YOU HAVE 24 HOURS TO CHOOSE WHICH FAMILY DIES."

No one moved.

No one spoke.

Because everyone in that ballroom understood the meaning behind those words.

This was no longer a business war.

No longer a battle for inheritance.

No longer about Project Eclipse.

Someone had just declared war on Emily Carter herself.

And the enemy knew exactly how to hurt her.

By forcing her to choose.

Between blood.

Between families.

Between the people who had lied to her...

And the people who had betrayed her.

Emily stared at the screen.

Her face was calm.

But inside...

Everything was collapsing.

"Alexander Carter."

She whispered the name.

Her grandmother's missing son.

Her uncle.

The man who had supposedly vanished twenty-eight years ago.

The man who was now threatening her unborn child.

"He's alive."

Michael Reeves nodded slowly.

"Yes."

Emily turned toward him.

"You knew?"

Michael looked away.

"I suspected."

Her eyes narrowed.

"Suspected?"

A bitter smile crossed her face.

"That's what everyone says when they don't want to admit they knew the truth."

Michael accepted the accusation.

Because he deserved it.

"I didn't know where he was."

A pause.

"But Evelyn did."

Emily froze.

"My grandmother?"

Michael nodded.

"Your grandmother never stopped searching for him."

The screen changed.

A hidden archive opened.

ALEXANDER CARTER — PERSONAL FILE

Birth records.

Research notes.

Photographs.

And one final document.

STATUS: ALIVE

The entire ballroom gasped.

Thomas closed his eyes.

Richard looked unusually serious.

Even Margaret, who had returned quietly with security surrounding her, looked afraid.

Emily noticed.

"Why is everyone afraid of him?"

Nobody answered.

Until Richard spoke.

"Because Alexander Carter was the smartest person in the room."

Emily looked at him.

"You expect me to believe you?"

Richard smiled faintly.

"I expect you to understand something."

He looked at the screen.

"Your uncle didn't disappear because he lost."

A pause.

"He disappeared because he won."

THE BROTHER WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

Michael walked toward the screen.

"Alexander was Evelyn's first child."

He opened another file.

"When Project Eclipse began, Alexander was the original architect."

Emily frowned.

"My grandmother created it."

"Yes."

Michael nodded.

"But Alexander created the foundation."

The screen showed early designs.

Artificial intelligence systems.

Medical prediction models.

Global data networks.

Emily stared.

"This was decades ahead of its time."

Michael nodded.

"Exactly."

Alexander Carter had been a genius.

But genius without limits could become dangerous.

"He believed information was the greatest power in the world."

Michael continued.

"And whoever controlled information controlled humanity."

Emily felt cold.

"And my grandmother disagreed."

"Yes."

Michael looked at her.

"That disagreement destroyed the family."

THE NIGHT EVERYTHING CHANGED

Thomas finally spoke.

"Alexander wasn't always like this."

Everyone turned.

Emily looked at her father.

"You knew him."

Thomas nodded.

"He was my brother-in-law."

A pause.

"He was the person who taught me everything about business."

Emily was stunned.

"You worked with him?"

Thomas looked ashamed.

"Yes."

Richard laughed quietly.

"Everyone worked with him."

The room turned.

Richard continued.

"Before he became the enemy..."

"He was the person everyone admired."

A pause.

"Until he discovered something."

Emily looked at him.

"What?"

Richard's expression darkened.

"That Project Eclipse could predict human decisions."

Silence.

Emily understood.

Not just medical records.

Not just financial information.

Human behavior.

Choices.

Future actions.

A system capable of predicting what people would do before they did it.

"That's impossible."

Emily whispered.

Michael shook his head.

"Not anymore."

The room became colder.

THE MESSAGE FROM ALEXANDER

Suddenly...

The screen changed.

A video appeared.

A man sat in a dark room.

Older.

Gray hair.

Sharp eyes.

Emily knew immediately.

Alexander Carter.

Her uncle.

Her grandmother's lost son.

The man who had returned from the shadows.

He looked directly into the camera.

"Hello, Emily."

Her heart tightened.

He knew her.

"I know you have questions."

A faint smile.

"You have spent your entire life believing your family protected you."

A pause.

"They didn't."

Emily stared.

Alexander continued.

"They lied."

"They manipulated."

"They used you."

His expression changed.

"But I am different."

Emily almost laughed.

Everyone said that.

Everyone claimed they were different.

Alexander leaned closer.

"I am the only person who wants to give you the truth."

THE SECRET OF EMILY'S BIRTH

Then Alexander said something that changed everything.

"Emily..."

"You were never supposed to inherit Project Eclipse."

The room froze.

Emily frowned.

"What?"

Alexander continued.

"Your grandmother didn't choose you because you were the strongest."

"She chose you because you were the last person she believed could destroy it."

Emily felt confused.

"Destroy it?"

A pause.

"Yes."

Alexander looked directly into the camera.

"Your grandmother created a system capable of controlling the world."

"But she realized too late..."

"The system itself was the danger."

Emily looked at Michael.

At Thomas.

At everyone.

Nobody denied it.

Alexander continued:

"The final purpose of Project Eclipse was never ownership."

"It was termination."

Emily froze.

"Then why does everyone want it?"

Alexander smiled sadly.

"Because they don't know the truth."

A pause.

"They think they can control a god."

His eyes became darker.

"They don't understand they are fighting for the right to destroy themselves."

THE CHOICE

The video ended.

The screen displayed a new countdown.

23:41:09

Twenty-three hours.

Forty-one minutes.

Emily looked around the room.

Everyone wanted something.

Richard wanted control.

Margaret wanted survival.

Thomas wanted forgiveness.

Daniel wanted redemption.

Alexander wanted her trust.

But none of them asked what she wanted.

Emily placed her hand over her stomach.

Her child moved.

A small reminder.

She was not fighting for an empire.

She was fighting for a future.

Then she turned toward Michael.

"Can Alexander access Project Eclipse?"

Michael hesitated.

"Yes."

"Can he hurt my baby?"

Silence.

Then Michael answered honestly.

"Yes."

The room changed instantly.

Daniel stepped forward.

"Then we find him."

Richard looked at him.

"You think you can stop your uncle?"

Daniel's expression hardened.

"No."

A pause.

"But I can stop my father."

Everyone turned.

Richard's eyes narrowed.

"What did you say?"

Daniel looked at Emily.

"I spent my whole life following powerful men."

He removed his jacket.

"I followed my father."

A pause.

"I followed my family."

Then he looked directly at Richard.

"But I won't follow anyone who threatens her."

For the first time...

Daniel chose a side.

Not Whitmore.

Not Carter.

Emily.

Then suddenly...

A security alert appeared.

UNKNOWN PERSON ENTERING PRIVATE LEVEL

Everyone froze.

Michael looked at the security feed.

His face went pale.

"No..."

Emily looked.

The camera showed a man walking through the underground archive beneath Ashford Hall.

An older man.

Calm.

Confident.

Holding a file.

Alexander Carter.

But that wasn't what shocked them.

It was the person walking beside him.

A woman.

A woman everyone believed had died twenty years ago.

Emily's face turned white.

Because she recognized her.

The woman on the screen looked directly into the camera.

And whispered:

"Emily..."

A pause.

"Forgive me."

Emily couldn't breathe.

Because the woman speaking...

May you like

Was her mother.

CATHERINE CARTER WAS ALIVE.
