CHAPTER 4 — THE FATHER WHO CAME BACK FROM THE DEAD

The ballroom doors opened.

Slowly.

Almost dramatically.

As if even the building itself understood that what was about to happen would change every life inside it.

A man stepped into the room.

Older.

Thinner.

His hair touched with silver.

His face marked by years nobody knew about.

But his eyes...

Those eyes were unmistakable.

Emily stopped breathing.

Because somewhere deep inside her memory...

Before the lies.

Before the secrets.

Before the pain...

She knew those eyes.

"No..."

The word escaped her lips.

Barely audible.

"No, that can't be..."

The man looked at her.

And tears immediately filled his eyes.

"Emily."

Her name.

The way he said it.

The same way he had said it when she was a little girl.

The same voice that used to read her bedtime stories.

The same voice she thought she would never hear again.

"Dad?"

The entire ballroom went silent.

Thomas Carter.

The billionaire founder of Carter Medical Technologies.

The man who had supposedly died twelve years earlier.

The man whose funeral Emily had attended.

The man whose grave she had visited every year.

Was standing alive in front of her.

Nobody moved.

Nobody knew what to say.

Because there were some things that broke the rules of reality.

And a dead man walking into his daughter's wedding was one of them.

Emily took one step forward.

Then another.

Her entire body was shaking.

"You're alive."

Thomas looked at her.

"I'm sorry."

Two words.

But they carried twelve years of pain.

Emily stopped.

Sorry?

That was all he had?

After twelve years?

After she had grown up believing she was an orphan?

After she had spent nights crying because she missed him?

"You let me bury you."

Her voice broke.

"You let me believe you were gone."

Thomas lowered his eyes.

"I know."

The anger came before the tears.

"Do you know what that did to me?"

Her voice became louder.

"I was twenty-two years old."

"I lost my father."

"I lost my family."

"I had nobody."

Thomas looked devastated.

"I wanted to come back."

"But I couldn't."

Emily laughed bitterly.

"Couldn't?"

A pause.

"Or didn't want to?"

The words hit him.

Because he deserved them.

Behind them...

Daniel watched silently.

For the first time that night...

He realized something.

The plan was bigger than he thought.

Much bigger.

Margaret Whitmore stepped forward.

Her confidence had disappeared.

"Thomas."

The way she said his name revealed everything.

She wasn't surprised.

She was afraid.

Emily noticed.

"You knew."

Everyone turned toward Margaret.

Emily's voice became cold.

"You knew my father was alive."

Margaret said nothing.

"Answer me."

Margaret finally spoke.

"Yes."

The ballroom exploded.

Emily stared.

"You knew?"

A pause.

"You knew I was suffering?"

Margaret looked away.

"Your father made his choice."

Emily couldn't believe it.

"My father made his choice?"

She pointed toward Thomas.

"He lost twelve years with his daughter because of your family."

Thomas stepped forward.

"No, Emily."

Everyone looked at him.

"It wasn't only her family."

Silence.

Emily turned.

"What does that mean?"

Thomas looked at her.

And she saw something she had never seen before.

Fear.

"The truth is..."

He hesitated.

"I was not the victim."

A pause.

"I was part of the problem."

Emily froze.

Thomas walked toward the screen.

"Project Eclipse wasn't stolen."

He looked at the documents.

"It was created by three people."

A pause.

"Me."

"Catherine."

"And Margaret."

The entire room froze.

Daniel whispered:

"What?"

Thomas continued.

"We started it together."

"The technology."

"The research."

"The entire system."

Emily looked confused.

"But you said my father wanted to expose them."

Thomas nodded.

"I did."

A pause.

"Because I discovered what they planned to do with it."

The room became colder.

Thomas looked at Emily.

"Project Eclipse was never just about medicine."

The screen behind him activated.

A hidden file appeared.

A file that had not been opened before.

PROJECT ECLIPSE — PHASE TWO

Thomas stared at it.

"This is the part nobody was supposed to find."

Emily stepped closer.

"What is it?"

Thomas took a deep breath.

"Control."

The word echoed.

"The technology could predict illnesses."

A pause.

"But with enough data..."

"It could predict human behavior."

Nobody spoke.

Thomas continued:

"Your health."

"Your choices."

"Your habits."

"Your weaknesses."

Emily's face changed.

"You mean..."

Thomas nodded.

"They wanted to build the most powerful surveillance system in the world."

The guests looked horrified.

Margaret finally spoke.

"Don't listen to him."

Everyone turned.

Her voice was sharp.

"You have no idea what you're talking about."

Thomas smiled sadly.

"Still lying after all these years."

Margaret's expression changed.

Thomas looked at Emily.

"The reason they needed you to sign those documents tonight..."

A pause.

"Was because the final ownership key belongs to you."

Emily looked at him.

"Me?"

Thomas nodded.

"Your mother transferred everything into a trust under your name before she died."

"But why?"

Thomas looked toward the screen.

"Because Catherine knew one day they would come for it."

Emily remembered the video.

Her mother's final words.

"The person who betrayed your father is not the person you think."

Suddenly...

The ballroom lights flickered.

Everyone turned.

A new message appeared on the screen.

No one had opened it.

No one had touched anything.

A black background.

White letters.

"THOMAS CARTER IS LYING."

The room froze.

A second message appeared.

"ASK HIM WHY HE REALLY DISAPPEARED."

Emily looked at her father.

The man she thought was her savior.

And for the second time that night...

Her world cracked apart.

Because the truth was no longer simple.

There were no heroes.

No villains.

Only people hiding pieces of a story.

Daniel looked at the screen.

Then at Thomas.

His face became pale.

Because he recognized the message.

Emily noticed.

"Daniel?"

He didn't answer.

"Daniel."

This time louder.

"Who sent that?"

Daniel slowly looked at her.

And whispered:

"The person who started all of this."

"Who?"

Daniel swallowed.

"The person who has been controlling both our families for twenty years."

A pause.

"The person who everyone believed died before this wedding began."

The ballroom doors suddenly locked again.

And a voice came through the speakers.

A voice everyone recognized.

"Congratulations, Emily."

"You finally found the truth."

Everyone froze.

May you like

Because the voice belonged to...

Catherine Carter.
