CHAPTER 5 — THE MOTHER WHO NEVER DIED

The voice came from everywhere.

The ceiling speakers.

The walls.

The hidden sound system built into the ballroom.

A woman's voice.

Soft.

Calm.

Familiar.

A voice Emily had spent three years trying to forget.

"Congratulations, Emily."

A pause.

"You finally found the truth."

Nobody breathed.

Nobody moved.

Because everyone in that room knew that voice.

Even if they wished they didn't.

Emily's face turned completely pale.

Her fingers tightened around the edge of the table beside her.

"No..."

A whisper.

A denial.

A desperate attempt to hold onto the last version of reality she understood.

"No, that's not possible."

Daniel looked at her.

And this time...

He didn't look guilty.

He looked terrified.

Because he knew.

He knew before anyone else.

"Who is that?"

One of the guests asked.

Nobody answered.

Because the answer was impossible.

Thomas Carter stared at the ceiling speakers.

His face had lost all color.

"Catherine..."

He whispered.

Emily turned sharply.

"You knew?"

Her voice cut through the silence.

"You knew that was my mother?"

Thomas didn't respond.

And that silence hurt more than any confession.

Emily stepped backward.

Her wedding dress dragged across the marble floor.

A dress that was supposed to represent a new beginning.

A dress that had become the symbol of betrayal.

"My mother died."

Her voice shook.

"I watched them lower her coffin."

The speakers crackled.

Then Catherine laughed softly.

Not cruelly.

Not happily.

Almost sadly.

"You watched them lower an empty coffin, Emily."

The entire ballroom froze.

"What?"

Emily's voice barely existed.

The screen changed.

A video appeared.

A hospital room.

A woman lying in a bed.

Machines surrounding her.

The date appeared.

Three years earlier.

Everyone stared.

Because the woman in the hospital bed was Catherine Carter.

Alive.

Emily covered her mouth.

"No..."

The video continued.

Catherine opened her eyes.

And beside her stood Margaret Whitmore.

Emily's stomach dropped.

Margaret.

The woman who had spent the evening humiliating her.

The woman who had accused her.

The woman who had tried to take everything from her.

Was standing beside her mother.

Catherine's weak voice came through the speakers.

"You promised me she would be safe."

Margaret replied:

"Safe?"

A cold laugh.

"Your daughter is the reason all of this started."

Emily froze.

"What does that mean?"

She looked at nobody.

Only the screen.

Catherine whispered:

"Emily knows nothing."

Margaret looked at her.

"That's exactly why she is useful."

The room erupted.

"Useful?"

"Her own daughter?"

"What's happening?"

Emily couldn't hear them.

She could only hear her mother's voice.

Catherine looked exhausted.

"I never wanted this."

Margaret stepped closer.

"You made your choice years ago."

The video paused.

Emily stared at the frozen image.

Her mother.

Margaret.

A hospital room.

Secrets.

Lies.

Everything she believed about her life was collapsing.

Then Catherine's voice returned.

But this time...

It wasn't from the recording.

It was live.

"Emily."

Emily looked around.

"I know you're angry."

A tear fell down Emily's cheek.

Anger wasn't even enough to describe what she felt.

"You abandoned me."

Her voice cracked.

"You let me believe you were dead."

Silence.

Then Catherine answered.

"Because if you knew I was alive..."

A pause.

"...they would have killed you."

Nobody moved.

Emily laughed bitterly.

"Killed me?"

She looked around the ballroom.

"Is that supposed to make this better?"

Catherine's voice became softer.

"No."

Another pause.

"I know I failed you."

The honesty shocked everyone.

"But I need you to understand something."

The lights dimmed.

The screen changed again.

A file appeared.

PROJECT ECLIPSE — ORIGINAL ARCHIVE

Catherine continued:

"Your father thinks he knows the whole truth."

Thomas looked angry.

"Catherine, stop."

But she continued.

"Margaret thinks she controls everything."

Margaret's expression changed.

"And Daniel..."

Everyone looked at Daniel.

"Daniel thinks he was the mastermind."

Daniel lowered his eyes.

"But none of them know the final secret."

Emily stared at the screen.

"What secret?"

A long silence.

Then Catherine answered.

"The reason Project Eclipse belongs to you."

The room became silent.

Emily frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

Catherine continued:

"Your father didn't create Project Eclipse."

Thomas looked shocked.

"What?"

Emily turned toward him.

Catherine's voice became stronger.

"He helped develop it."

"But the original idea..."

A pause.

"It came from someone else."

The screen changed.

A document appeared.

At the top was a name.

PROJECT ECLIPSE — FOUNDING AUTHOR

Emily stared.

Because the name was familiar.

Very familiar.

Not Thomas Carter.

Not Margaret Whitmore.

Not Catherine Carter.

The name belonged to someone who had never been mentioned.

Evelyn Carter.

Emily froze.

"My grandmother?"

Catherine answered:

"Yes."

Everyone looked confused.

Emily's grandmother had died when she was young.

She was just a quiet woman who loved gardening.

A woman nobody considered powerful.

But Catherine revealed the truth.

"Your grandmother was a scientist."

The ballroom went silent.

"She created the foundation of Project Eclipse decades ago."

Thomas looked away.

Because he knew.

Emily stared at her father.

"You knew."

Thomas whispered:

"Yes."

"And you never told me?"

He looked broken.

"Because I was trying to protect you."

Emily shook her head.

"Everyone keeps saying that."

A pause.

"Protect me."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"But everyone who said that destroyed my life."

Nobody had an answer.

Then Catherine spoke again.

"Emily..."

Her voice trembled.

"For years, I believed hiding the truth would save you."

A pause.

"I was wrong."

The screen changed one final time.

A document appeared.

A legal transfer.

A signature.

Emily leaned closer.

Then her heart stopped.

The document was dated:

ONE DAY BEFORE HER WEDDING.

And the signature at the bottom...

Was hers.

Emily stepped back.

"I never signed that."

Daniel looked at the document.

Then his face changed.

Because he recognized it.

"What?"

Emily turned toward him.

"What is it?"

Daniel's voice was almost a whisper.

"That's impossible."

"What?"

Daniel looked at her.

"The document wasn't created for tonight."

A pause.

"It was created years ago."

Emily stared.

"Who signed it?"

Daniel looked at the signature.

Then at Emily.

"The signature is yours."

Emily shook her head.

"No."

Daniel swallowed.

"But the date..."

He pointed.

"The date is from when you were sixteen years old."

The entire ballroom froze.

Emily felt the world disappear beneath her feet.

Because someone had forged her signature before she was even an adult.

Someone had planned her entire life.

Her marriage.

Her company.

Her future.

Then the screen displayed one final message.

"THE WEDDING WAS NEVER ABOUT THE RING."

"IT WAS ABOUT ACTIVATING THE INHERITANCE."

Emily looked around the room.

At Daniel.

At her father.

At Margaret.

At the screen carrying her mother's voice.

And she finally understood.

May you like

Tonight was not the beginning of the betrayal.

Tonight was the end of a plan that had been twenty years in the making.
