CHAPTER 6 — THE SIGNATURE THAT SHOULD NOT EXIST

The ballroom had become a place where nothing made sense anymore.
A wedding.
A betrayal.
A dead woman speaking through the walls.
A father who returned from the grave.
And now...
A document claiming Emily Carter had signed away her own future when she was only sixteen years old.
The giant screen remained frozen.
The signature stared back at everyone.
A name written in elegant black ink.
Emily Carter.
But Emily knew one thing with absolute certainty.
She had never signed that document.
Not at sixteen.
Not ever.
"No."
Her voice was quiet.
But everyone heard it.
"No, that isn't my signature."
Daniel looked at the document again.
His face was pale.
Because he knew something Emily didn't.
"Daniel."
She turned toward him.
"You recognized it."
He didn't answer.
And that was enough.
Emily's eyes hardened.
"Tell me."
A pause.
"What is that?"
Daniel looked around the ballroom.
At his family.
At her father.
At the guests.
Then finally at Emily.
"It's an inheritance activation agreement."
The words meant nothing to most people.
But to the powerful people in that room...
They meant everything.
Margaret Whitmore immediately stepped forward.
"Daniel, stop."
But he didn't listen.
Not anymore.
"For twenty years, both families have been waiting for one moment."
He looked at Emily.
"The moment you became legally capable of controlling Project Eclipse."
Emily stared.
"I was sixteen."
Daniel nodded.
"Exactly."
The room erupted.
"How could a minor control a billion-dollar project?"
"Who created this agreement?"
"Who forged her signature?"
Daniel remained silent.
Then Thomas Carter spoke.
And his voice carried a sadness that made everyone turn.
"I did."
Emily froze.
The world seemed to stop.
Her father.
The man who had supposedly protected her.
The man who had disappeared.
The man who had returned claiming he wanted to save her.
"You?"
Her voice cracked.
"You forged my signature?"
Thomas closed his eyes.
"I created the document."
A tear escaped Emily's eye.
Not because she was surprised.
Because somehow...
She had already lost the ability to be surprised.
"Why?"
Thomas looked at her.
"Because I knew they were coming for you."
Emily laughed softly.
A painful sound.
"Everyone says that."
She wiped her face.
"Everyone says they were protecting me."
A pause.
"But somehow..."
Her eyes moved around the room.
"...everyone who protected me lied to me."
Nobody responded.
Because nobody could deny it.
Thomas walked closer.
"I was wrong."
Emily looked at him.
"I thought if I hid your identity as the true owner of Project Eclipse, nobody could use you."
He looked toward Margaret.
"I underestimated how far they would go."
Margaret smiled coldly.
"Don't pretend you were a hero."
Thomas turned.
"You were willing to destroy my daughter."
Margaret's expression hardened.
"Your daughter inherited something that could control governments."
A chill moved through the ballroom.
Emily stared.
"Control governments?"
Nobody answered.
Then Catherine's voice came through the speakers again.
"Now you understand why they needed you powerless."
Everyone looked upward.
"Emily, if you controlled Project Eclipse..."
A pause.
"...you controlled the most valuable information system ever created."
The screen changed.
New files appeared.
Medical records.
Financial data.
Private information.
Millions of names.
Emily stepped closer.
"What is this?"
Daniel answered quietly.
"A database."
She looked at him.
"What kind of database?"
His voice lowered.
"The kind that governments would pay billions to own."
The room became colder.
"Your grandmother discovered a way to predict health risks."
Daniel continued.
"But the second version..."
He looked at the screen.
"It became something else."
Emily watched the data moving across the screen.
People's names.
Addresses.
Medical histories.
Personal information.
"This is illegal."
Thomas nodded.
"Yes."
"Then why did you create it?"
Thomas looked away.
Because the answer was painful.
"Because we didn't know what it would become."
Silence.
For years...
Emily had believed her family was destroyed by greed.
Now she realized something worse.
They had been destroyed by ambition.
Then Daniel stepped forward.
"Emily."
She looked at him.
"I need to tell you something."
Her expression immediately hardened.
"What now?"
Daniel accepted the anger.
"I wasn't the one who created tonight's plan."
Emily laughed.
"You expect me to believe that?"
"No."
He shook his head.
"I expect you to hate me."
A pause.
"But you need the truth."
The room listened.
Daniel continued.
"My family wanted your signature."
Emily nodded.
"I know."
"But Margaret wasn't planning to steal your company."
Everyone turned.
"What?"
Emily frowned.
Daniel looked at his mother.
"She wanted something bigger."
Margaret's face changed.
Daniel continued.
"She wanted the original source code."
Emily looked confused.
"What original source code?"
Daniel looked at Thomas.
"The one hidden by your grandmother."
Thomas went silent.
Emily noticed.
"Dad?"
Thomas didn't answer.
"Dad."
Her voice became sharper.
"What are you hiding?"
Thomas finally spoke.
"Your grandmother didn't trust anyone."
A pause.
"Not me."
"Not Catherine."
"Not Margaret."
"Before she died, she separated Project Eclipse into two parts."
The screen changed.
Two files appeared.
PART ONE — THE SYSTEM
PART TWO — THE KEY
Daniel pointed.
"Your family had the system."
Emily looked at the second file.
"And the key?"
Thomas looked directly at her.
"You."
The room went silent.
"Me?"
Thomas nodded.
"Your grandmother designed the system so only her bloodline could unlock the final layer."
Emily stepped back.
"The final layer of what?"
Nobody answered.
Then the ballroom doors suddenly opened.
A man entered.
Security immediately moved toward him.
But Thomas stopped them.
"Wait."
Everyone looked.
Because Thomas recognized him.
The stranger removed his coat.
Then placed a folder on the nearest table.
"I think it's time Emily learns the final truth."
Thomas's face changed.
"No..."
Emily looked between them.
"Who is he?"
The stranger looked at her.
"I was your grandmother's assistant."
A pause.
"And I was the last person who saw her alive."
Emily's heart stopped.
Because her grandmother had not died peacefully.
She had been murdered.
And the person responsible...
Had been sitting in this ballroom all night.
The stranger opened the folder.
Inside was an old photograph.
A photograph from twenty years ago.
Everyone gathered around.
And Emily saw it.
Her grandmother.
Her father.
Her mother.
Margaret.
And standing beside them...
A fifth person.
A person nobody had mentioned.
A person Emily knew very well.
Her husband's father.
The founder of the Whitmore empire.
A man who supposedly died fifteen years ago.
The stranger whispered:
"Your grandmother wasn't killed because of Project Eclipse."
A pause.
"She was killed because she discovered who truly owned it."
Emily stared at the photograph.
And then she understood.
The war between Carter and Whitmore families...
Was never about money.
It was about a secret inheritance that had been hidden from the world.
May you like
And tonight...
The secret had finally awakened.
