CHAPTER 8 — Daniel Ashford’s Impossible Choice

The voice on the recording continued.
A voice Claire had spent twenty-eight years trying to forget.
A voice that existed only in fragments of memory.
A lullaby.
A whisper.
A final goodbye.
Her mother's voice.
"Claire..."
"If you are hearing this..."
"It means they finally found you."
The ballroom disappeared.
The people disappeared.
The lights.
The wealth.
The power.
All of it vanished.
For one moment...
Claire was no longer a billionaire.
No longer the founder of Bennett Holdings.
No longer the woman who had walked into Ashford Hall and forced an entire dynasty to answer for its crimes.
She was just a little girl again.
Standing by a window.
Waiting for her mother to come home.
And never understanding why she never did.
Her fingers trembled.
Daniel noticed immediately.
He moved toward her.
But Claire stepped back.
Not because she hated him.
Because she was trying to remain standing.
"Stop the recording."
Her voice was barely audible.
Alexander looked at her.
"Claire..."
"Stop it."
The room went silent.
Nathaniel nodded.
The screen went dark.
For several seconds...
Nobody spoke.
Then Vivienne laughed.
Quietly.
Almost happily.
Because even after everything...
She had found something that could hurt Claire.
"Interesting."
Everyone looked at her.
Vivienne adjusted her dress.
"The great Claire Bennett finally has a weakness."
Claire looked at her.
There was no fear in her eyes.
Only exhaustion.
"You are wrong."
Vivienne smiled.
"Am I?"
"You built an empire."
"You bought my family's home."
"You exposed my secrets."
"But one thing you never conquered..."
She pointed at Claire.
"Was the truth about yourself."
Daniel stepped forward.
"Enough."
Vivienne looked at him.
"You are defending her?"
Daniel's voice was cold.
"For the first time in my life..."
"Yes."
The answer shocked everyone.
Especially Vivienne.
Because Daniel had spent his entire life avoiding conflict with his mother.
He had always chosen peace.
Silence.
Compromise.
But tonight...
Something inside him had changed.
He looked at Claire.
"I spent seven years believing you left me."
His voice cracked.
"I hated you for it."
Claire looked away.
"But I was wrong."
The ballroom became quiet.
"I should have searched harder."
"I should have fought."
"I should have known my mother was capable of this."
Claire said nothing.
Because apologies mattered.
But they could not erase years.
Daniel continued.
"I can't change what happened."
"But I can choose what happens now."
For a moment...
Claire almost believed him.
Then the screen activated again.
Everyone turned.
Alexander had restarted the recording.
This time...
Claire did not stop him.
Because she understood.
Running from the truth had never protected her.
It had only delayed the pain.
The video began.
A young woman appeared.
Elizabeth Ashford-Bennett.
Claire's mother.
She looked tired.
But beautiful.
She held a baby.
Claire.
Her voice trembled.
"My daughter..."
"I don't know who will find this."
"I don't know if I will be alive when you see it."
Claire covered her mouth.
Her mother continued.
"But I need you to know something."
"I did not leave you."
Tears filled Claire's eyes.
"I was forced to."
The room became completely silent.
Elizabeth continued.
"The night you were born, I discovered what Vivienne was planning."
The camera shook slightly.
"She wanted control of the Ashford empire."
"She believed Nathaniel would choose blood over love."
"She believed anyone who stood against her had to disappear."
Vivienne's face changed.
Because now...
The person who could expose her was not dead.
She was alive.
And she had left evidence.
Elizabeth continued.
"Your father wanted to take you and run."
A pause.
"But Vivienne found out."
Claire looked at Nathaniel.
He lowered his head.
"She threatened everyone."
"She threatened William."
"She threatened Nathaniel."
"She threatened me."
The recording showed Elizabeth looking directly into the camera.
"And then she made the choice for me."
Claire whispered:
"No..."
Because she suddenly understood.
Her mother had not abandoned her.
She had sacrificed herself.
Elizabeth continued:
"To protect Claire, I agreed to disappear."
"But I left one person responsible for finding her when the time was right."
The screen changed.
A document appeared.
A signature.
Everyone leaned closer.
The name shocked Daniel.
Nathaniel Ashford.
The old man closed his eyes.
Claire looked at him.
"You knew she was alive."
Nathaniel nodded.
"I did."
"Where is she?"
His silence was the answer.
Claire's expression changed.
"You don't know."
"No."
"Or you won't tell me?"
Nathaniel looked devastated.
"Claire..."
She stepped away.
"Twenty-eight years."
"Everyone knew pieces of my life."
"Everyone had answers."
"And everyone decided I wasn't ready."
Nobody spoke.
Because she was right.
Everyone had protected her by controlling the truth.
Even the people who loved her.
Then Sophie walked forward.
The little girl looked at Claire.
"Mom."
Claire looked down.
"Yes?"
Sophie touched her hand.
"Are you sad?"
Claire forced a smile.
"A little."
Sophie thought for a moment.
Then said:
"But you found me."
Claire froze.
Sophie continued.
"When I was scared tonight..."
"You came."
"When I cried..."
"You came."
She looked toward Nathaniel.
"Maybe your mom couldn't come."
"But you came."
The words broke something inside Claire.
She knelt.
And hugged her daughter.
For the first time that night...
She cried.
Not because she was weak.
Because after twenty-eight years...
Someone finally gave her permission to grieve.
Daniel watched silently.
And realized something painful.
Claire had not needed saving.
She had needed someone to believe her.
Then suddenly...
A security officer rushed into the ballroom.
Everyone turned.
The man looked terrified.
"Mr. Langley."
Robert stepped forward.
"What happened?"
The officer handed him a tablet.
"We found something in the lower archive."
Robert looked at the screen.
Then his face changed.
"What?"
Daniel moved closer.
"What is it?"
Robert looked at Claire.
"We found a sealed room beneath Ashford Hall."
Everyone froze.
"A room?"
The officer nodded.
"Yes."
"It was hidden for twenty-eight years."
Nathaniel's face became pale.
Because he knew exactly what room they had found.
"No..."
Claire looked at him.
"What?"
Nathaniel whispered:
"The Ashford family archive."
A pause.
"The place where Vivienne stored every secret she ever buried."
Vivienne suddenly turned toward the exit.
For the first time...
She was not angry.
She was desperate.
Claire noticed.
"Why are you afraid?"
Vivienne said nothing.
Claire stepped closer.
"What is inside that room?"
The older woman stared at her.
Then whispered:
"The truth about why your mother disappeared."
Silence.
The officer continued.
"But there is one problem."
Everyone looked at him.
"The room opened automatically."
Robert frowned.
"How?"
The officer looked at Claire.
"Because the security system recognized one person."
Claire's heart stopped.
"Who?"
The officer answered:
"The owner."
Everyone looked at her.
"The system identified..."
"Claire Elizabeth Ashford-Bennett."
The name echoed through the ballroom.
Not Claire Bennett.
Not the forgotten girl.
Not the abandoned child.
The heir.
Nathaniel looked at her with tears in his eyes.
"Welcome home."
But before Claire could respond...
A final message appeared on the tablet.
One sentence.
Written twenty-eight years ago.
"If Claire returns to Ashford Hall, tell her the truth about the night she was born."
And below it...
A signature.
Elizabeth Ashford-Bennett.
Claire stared.
Because her mother had not only survived.
May you like
She had been waiting.
Waiting for her daughter to come home.
