CHAPTER 18 — The Woman Who Started the War

The words echoed in Marcus Vale's mind.
"Bring me Sophie."
For the first time in years...
Marcus hesitated.
Not because he was afraid of Claire.
Not because he feared the consequences.
But because Sophie was different.
She was innocent.
She had nothing to do with the war between these families.
"She is a child."
The woman on the screen remained calm.
"She is the key."
Marcus looked away.
"No."
A long silence followed.
The woman slowly leaned closer.
"You forget something, Marcus."
"What?"
"You are not in a position to refuse."
Marcus clenched his jaw.
"You promised me freedom."
"And I gave you a purpose."
Her voice became colder.
"Without me, you would still be that abandoned boy nobody wanted."
The words hit harder than any threat.
Because they were true.
Marcus had spent his entire life trying to prove he mattered.
Trying to prove he belonged.
Trying to prove he was not the forgotten child.
The woman continued:
"Do not confuse kindness with weakness."
"Claire Bennett took everything that was supposed to be yours."
Marcus stared at the screen.
"No."
The woman smiled.
"You're still protecting her."
A pause.
"Interesting."
At the hospital...
Claire sat beside Alexander's bed.
Neither spoke for a long time.
The past twenty-four hours had changed everything.
Her father was alive.
Her mother had returned.
Her grandfather's secrets had been exposed.
Her closest friend had betrayed her.
And now...
Her own family tree had become a battlefield.
Alexander watched her carefully.
"You look tired."
Claire gave a small laugh.
"I spent twenty-eight years searching for answers."
"And now I wish I had fewer questions."
Alexander understood.
Because he had lived with the same burden.
"Claire."
She looked at him.
"I need to tell you something."
"What?"
He reached for the folder.
"The truth about Victoria Bennett."
Claire took it.
"Who was she?"
Alexander looked at the documents.
"Your grandmother."
"Your father's mother."
"The woman who created the foundation of Bennett wealth."
Claire opened the folder.
Inside were old photographs.
A young Victoria.
Powerful.
Elegant.
Dangerous.
The woman looked familiar.
Not because Claire had met her.
Because she saw herself.
The same eyes.
The same determination.
Alexander continued:
"Victoria believed the world belonged to people strong enough to take it."
Claire looked at the photographs.
"Sounds familiar."
Alexander nodded.
"She was brilliant."
"But she believed love was a weakness."
"She created Bennett Holdings before I disappeared."
Claire frowned.
"Then why did everyone think William built it?"
Alexander answered:
"Because William protected her secret."
"Why?"
"Because he loved her."
Claire stopped.
"My father?"
Alexander nodded.
"William Bennett was not your biological grandfather."
The room went silent.
Another secret.
Another name.
Another lie.
Claire closed her eyes.
"How many families am I connected to?"
Alexander smiled sadly.
"More than you ever wanted."
The door opened.
Elizabeth entered.
She looked at Claire.
"Your father told you."
Claire nodded.
"About Victoria."
Elizabeth sat beside her.
"She was my greatest fear."
Claire looked at her.
"Why?"
Elizabeth hesitated.
"Because she loved control more than family."
A pause.
"She believed children existed to continue a legacy."
"Not to be loved."
Claire looked down.
"And me?"
Elizabeth's voice broke.
"You were the one thing she could not control."
"Why?"
"Because you were born from two families."
"The Ashfords."
"The Bennetts."
"You represented unity."
Elizabeth touched Claire's hand.
"Victoria saw that as a threat."
Suddenly...
The hospital alarms activated.
Everyone froze.
Security rushed through the hallway.
"Ms. Bennett!"
Claire stood.
"What happened?"
The guard looked terrified.
"We lost contact with Sophie's security detail."
The world stopped.
Claire's face changed instantly.
"What?"
"She was at the hotel with Daniel's security team."
"When?"
"Ten minutes ago."
Claire grabbed her phone.
No answer.
Again.
No answer.
Her heart began racing.
Not from fear.
From instinct.
A mother's instinct.
"Where is Daniel?"
The guard looked down.
"Unknown."
Across the city...
A black SUV moved through the streets.
Inside...
Sophie sat quietly.
Not crying.
Not screaming.
Just holding her small gold locket.
The same locket that started everything.
A woman sat across from her.
Older.
Elegant.
Cold.
Victoria Bennett.
The woman Sophie had never met.
The woman whose actions had destroyed generations.
Sophie looked at her.
"Are you my grandma?"
Victoria smiled.
"Yes."
Sophie looked confused.
"My mommy said family protects you."
Victoria's smile faded slightly.
"Your mother taught you wrong."
Sophie hugged her locket.
"No."
Victoria studied her.
"You are just like Claire."
Sophie frowned.
"Is that bad?"
For the first time...
Something almost human appeared in Victoria's eyes.
"No."
A pause.
"It is dangerous."
At the hospital...
Claire received a video message.
One file.
No sender.
She opened it.
Sophie appeared on the screen.
Safe.
Calm.
But sitting beside someone.
Claire's blood froze.
Because she recognized the woman.
The same face from the photograph.
Victoria Bennett.
A voice message played.
"Claire."
"You spent your life searching for your family."
"Now your family has come back."
Claire's hands trembled.
Victoria continued:
"You believe you won because you exposed the Ashfords."
"You believe you are the rightful heir."
A pause.
"But you still don't understand the truth."
Claire stared at the screen.
"You were never the heir."
"You were the experiment."
The room went silent.
Victoria leaned toward the camera.
"The empire was never built for you."
"It was built to create someone stronger."
Claire whispered:
"Sophie..."
Victoria smiled.
"Your daughter is the future."
"Not you."
The video ended.
Claire stood frozen.
Because for the first time...
Someone was not trying to take her company.
Not trying to take her inheritance.
They were trying to take her daughter.
Daniel arrived moments later.
He saw Claire's face.
"What happened?"
Claire looked at him.
Her voice was barely audible.
"Victoria has Sophie."
Daniel froze.
"No."
Claire looked toward the city.
Her eyes hardened.
The fear disappeared.
Only a mother's determination remained.
"She wanted a war."
A pause.
"Now she has one."
Meanwhile...
Victoria watched Claire's reaction from the private estate.
Marcus stood nearby.
"You have Sophie."
Victoria nodded.
"Yes."
Marcus looked uncomfortable.
"And Claire?"
Victoria smiled.
"She will come."
"Why are you so sure?"
Victoria looked at the gold locket around Sophie's neck.
"Because I know Claire."
A pause.
"She spent her whole life fighting for what was taken from her."
She looked at Marcus.
"And now..."
"We will see how far she will go when someone tries to take what she loves most."
Marcus remained silent.
Because he finally understood.
This was never about inheritance.
It was never about money.
It was never about power.
May you like
It was about one question:
How much would a mother sacrifice to save her child?
