CHAPTER 5 — The Daughter They Tried to Erase

The phone continued ringing.

No one dared move.

Not even Vivienne.

For the first time in decades, the woman who controlled boardrooms, charities, and political campaigns stood completely still.

Because the message on her screen had only seven words.

"The second heir has arrived."

Daniel stared at her.

"What does that mean?"

Vivienne did not answer.

Claire watched her carefully.

She had learned long ago that silence revealed more than words.

And right now...

Vivienne Ashford was terrified.

Not angry.

Not offended.

Terrified.

Nathaniel slowly turned his wheelchair toward her.

"Who sent that message?"

Vivienne looked at him.

For a moment, the old woman who had spent her entire life pretending to be untouchable seemed to become smaller.

Then her expression hardened again.

"Nobody."

Nathaniel gave a quiet laugh.

"Still lying."

Vivienne placed the phone back into her purse.

"This evening has gone far enough."

She turned toward the guards.

"Open the doors."

Nobody moved.

Her eyes sharpened.

"I said open the doors."

The guards looked at Claire.

That simple action destroyed whatever remained of Vivienne's authority.

Because everyone saw it.

The guards were no longer hers.

Claire stepped forward.

"Nobody leaves until we understand what is happening."

Vivienne looked at her.

"You think you can control me?"

Claire glanced around the ballroom.

At the locked doors.

At the evidence displayed on the screens.

At the hundreds of witnesses.

"No."

"I think the truth can."

A murmur moved through the crowd.

Daniel looked at Claire.

There was something different in his expression now.

Not just guilt.

Respect.

For years, he had seen Claire as the woman who disappeared.

Tonight, he finally saw the woman who survived.

A woman who built an empire.

A woman who protected their daughter.

A woman who had faced his family alone.

And won.

Then suddenly...

A voice came from the entrance.

"Perhaps everyone should stop pretending they know the whole story."

The ballroom doors opened.

Everyone turned.

A young woman stood there.

Late twenties.

Elegant black dress.

Dark hair.

Confident posture.

She looked like someone born into wealth.

Like someone who belonged beneath the chandeliers.

But what shocked everyone...

Was not her appearance.

It was the reaction of the Ashford family.

Daniel went completely still.

Nathaniel's eyes widened.

And Vivienne...

Looked like she had seen a ghost.

"No."

The word escaped her lips.

The young woman walked slowly into the ballroom.

"I thought you would say that."

Daniel stared.

"Who are you?"

The woman looked at him.

Her eyes were filled with years of pain.

"My name is Isabella Laurent."

A pause.

"But I was born Isabella Ashford."

The ballroom exploded.

Whispers.

Questions.

Confusion.

Claire looked at Nathaniel.

The old man looked devastated.

Not surprised.

Devastated.

Which meant...

He knew.

"Grandfather..."

Daniel's voice was barely audible.

"How many secrets did this family have?"

Nathaniel lowered his head.

"Too many."

Vivienne stepped forward.

"You should not be here."

Isabella smiled.

"That's exactly what you told my mother."

Silence.

Claire felt something shift.

Because now the story was becoming bigger.

Much bigger.

Vivienne had not only hidden Sophie.

She had hidden Isabella too.

Daniel looked at the young woman.

"My mother knew you?"

Isabella laughed softly.

"Your mother raised me."

The room froze.

"What?"

Daniel stepped back.

Vivienne closed her eyes.

Because the truth was finally reaching the surface.

Isabella looked around.

"Seven years ago, everyone thought Claire Bennett was the only woman Vivienne wanted gone."

"She wasn't."

She looked at Daniel.

"Your mother erased anyone who threatened her control."

Claire stared.

"Who is your mother?"

Isabella looked toward Vivienne.

"My mother was Eleanor Ashford."

Nathaniel's face changed.

The name alone carried weight.

Because Eleanor Ashford was Nathaniel's first wife.

The woman who died twenty-eight years earlier.

Daniel whispered:

"That's impossible."

Isabella shook her head.

"No."

"It's the truth."

She walked closer.

"My mother did not die the way everyone was told."

The room became silent.

Nathaniel closed his eyes.

Pain appeared on his face.

"She knew."

Everyone looked at him.

Claire asked quietly:

"You knew?"

Nathaniel nodded.

"I knew Eleanor was alive."

Daniel looked horrified.

"And you never told me?"

Nathaniel looked at his grandson.

"I thought I was protecting you."

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"Everyone in this family uses that excuse."

The words hurt because they were true.

Everyone had claimed protection.

But everyone had caused damage.

Isabella looked at Claire.

"I am sorry."

Claire frowned.

"For what?"

"For what happened to you."

She looked at Sophie.

"And for what almost happened to her."

Sophie looked confused.

Claire gently placed a hand on her shoulder.

"Stay close to me."

Isabella nodded.

"Vivienne knew about me."

"She knew I existed."

"She knew I was the original Ashford heir."

Daniel looked at her.

"Then why hide?"

Isabella looked at Vivienne.

"Because she made sure nobody would believe me."

Vivienne finally spoke.

"You were unstable."

Isabella smiled.

"That's what you told everyone."

"You told people my mother was mentally ill."

"You told them I was an illegitimate child."

"You destroyed every record connecting me to the Ashford family."

Claire looked at the documents scattered across the table.

Another pattern.

Another person erased.

Another life destroyed.

Then Nathaniel said something that shocked everyone.

"The Ashford family had two heirs."

He looked at Sophie.

"And now..."

"Three."

Daniel stared.

"Three?"

Nathaniel nodded.

"The law recognizes Daniel's child."

"The family trust recognizes Isabella."

"And the original Ashford agreement recognizes another heir."

Nobody spoke.

Vivienne smiled faintly.

"There it is."

Everyone looked at her.

She continued:

"The reason you all lost."

Claire narrowed her eyes.

"What are you talking about?"

Vivienne looked at Isabella.

Then Sophie.

Then Daniel.

"The Ashford empire was never supposed to belong to any of you."

Nathaniel frowned.

"What did you do?"

Vivienne slowly reached into her purse.

She removed an old envelope.

Different from the others.

Yellowed.

Aged.

She placed it on the table.

"This is the original inheritance document."

Robert picked it up.

His face changed.

"Where did you get this?"

Vivienne smiled.

"From the person who created all of this."

Nathaniel's expression turned cold.

"Who?"

Vivienne looked directly at Claire.

And answered:

"Your father."

Silence.

Claire froze.

"My father?"

Vivienne nodded.

"Because Claire Bennett..."

"The reason I feared you from the beginning..."

"Was not because you married my son."

"Not because of Sophie."

"Not because of money."

She stepped closer.

"It was because you were never ordinary."

Claire stared at her.

"What does that mean?"

Vivienne smiled.

"It means your entire life..."

"Has been a lie."

The lights suddenly went out.

The ballroom fell into darkness.

People screamed.

Security moved.

Then the emergency lights turned on.

And on the main screen appeared a new message.

Not from Vivienne.

Not from Nathaniel.

Not from Claire.

A hidden video file.

Title:

"CLAIRE BENNETT — THE TRUE HEIR."

Everyone stared.

Claire's face lost color.

Because for the first time tonight...

She had no idea what secret was coming next.

May you like

And whoever created that file...

Had been waiting for this exact night.
