CHAPTER 10 — The Trial of the Ashford Name

The letter shook in Claire's hands.

Not because she was afraid.

Because after twenty-eight years of believing she had no answers...

She suddenly had too many.

Her father was alive.

Her mother had not abandoned her.

Her entire identity had been hidden behind layers of lies.

And the people who claimed to protect her...

Had been the ones who kept her trapped in the dark.

She read the final lines of Alexander Ashford's letter again.

"Claire, if you found this, it means Vivienne failed."

"Now you must learn the truth about your father..."

"And why he left you."

The question burned inside her.

Why?

Why would a father leave his child?

Why would a mother disappear?

Why would an entire family erase one girl's existence?

Claire folded the letter carefully.

Then she walked out of the archive.

Everyone immediately looked at her.

Daniel.

Nathaniel.

Vivienne.

Isabella.

Everyone wanted answers.

But Claire's expression told them something.

She had found something bigger than anyone expected.

"What did you find?" Daniel asked.

Claire looked at him.

For a moment, she saw the same man from seven years ago.

The man who held their newborn daughter.

The man who promised he would protect them.

Then she looked at Vivienne.

The woman who destroyed that promise.

Finally, she looked at Nathaniel.

The man who knew the truth and stayed silent.

"I found proof."

The room became quiet.

"Proof of what?"

Claire held up the letter.

"That everyone in this family has been lying."

Vivienne immediately stepped forward.

"Careful."

Claire looked at her.

"No."

"You should be careful."

The confidence in Claire's voice changed the atmosphere.

She was no longer the woman asking for answers.

She was the woman holding them.

"Alexander Ashford is alive."

The reaction was immediate.

Daniel froze.

Nathaniel grabbed the armrest of his wheelchair.

Isabella covered her mouth.

Vivienne...

Went completely silent.

That silence said everything.

Daniel stared at his mother.

"You knew."

Vivienne looked away.

"You don't understand."

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"No."

"I think I finally understand everything."

He looked around.

"My entire life was built on secrets."

Nathaniel lowered his head.

"I failed you."

Daniel looked at him.

"Yes."

The honesty hurt more than anger.

"I needed a grandfather."

"Not a man who protected a family name."

Nathaniel accepted the words.

Because he knew they were deserved.

Then Claire placed the letter on the table.

"There is more."

Everyone looked.

"The inheritance documents."

Robert stepped forward.

"What do they say?"

Claire opened the page.

"The Ashford empire was never supposed to transfer through Daniel."

A pause.

"Or Vivienne."

She looked at Sophie.

"It was always supposed to go to Alexander's bloodline."

Everyone looked at Sophie.

Then at Claire.

Because they finally understood.

The child Vivienne called "street trash"...

Was the person standing closest to the original inheritance.

Vivienne laughed.

But there was no humor.

"Do you really think a piece of paper changes everything?"

Claire looked at her.

"Yes."

"Because unlike you..."

"I don't need people to fear me to prove I belong."

The words struck hard.

Vivienne stepped closer.

"You still don't understand."

"I built this family."

"I saved this name."

Claire shook her head.

"No."

"You controlled it."

The ballroom became a courtroom.

And everyone knew it.

Robert slowly walked toward the center.

"As chairman of the Ashford Foundation..."

He looked at Vivienne.

"I have to ask."

"Are you aware that these documents indicate financial manipulation of Ashford assets?"

Vivienne's face changed.

"Excuse me?"

Robert continued.

"The accounts reviewed tonight show irregular transfers."

"Millions moved through private companies."

"Funds redirected away from charitable foundations."

The crowd reacted.

Vivienne's charity empire.

The image she protected for decades.

Was cracking.

Daniel looked at her.

"Mother..."

She turned.

"You think you can judge me?"

Her voice became sharp.

"I did what I had to do."

Daniel stared.

"That is always your excuse."

Vivienne stepped closer.

"You think the world rewards kindness?"

"It doesn't."

"It rewards winners."

Claire watched her.

And understood something.

Vivienne did not believe she was evil.

That was what made her dangerous.

She believed cruelty was necessary.

Then Alexander's letter contained another document.

Claire unfolded it.

Her expression changed.

"What?"

Daniel asked.

Claire looked at Nathaniel.

"This isn't only about inheritance."

"What is it?"

She placed the document down.

"The Ashford name was supposed to be transferred into a trust."

Robert read it.

His face turned pale.

"The trust was created for children."

"Children?"

Claire nodded.

"Children who were harmed by powerful families."

The room became silent.

Nathaniel looked emotional.

"Alexander wanted to change everything."

Claire continued.

"He believed the Ashford fortune should not belong to one family."

"He wanted it used to protect people who had no power."

Everyone looked at Vivienne.

Because now the difference was clear.

Alexander wanted legacy.

Vivienne wanted control.

Then suddenly...

The ballroom doors opened.

A group of federal investigators entered.

Everyone froze.

The leader stepped forward.

"Vivienne Ashford."

Her expression changed.

"On what authority?"

The investigator handed Robert a document.

"A federal investigation into financial fraud, falsification of records, and illegal interference with inheritance documents."

The room erupted.

Vivienne looked at Daniel.

"You're doing this?"

Daniel looked shocked.

"No."

Claire answered.

"I didn't call them."

Everyone turned.

She looked at the investigator.

"Who did?"

The investigator looked at his tablet.

"An anonymous source."

He paused.

"Submitted twenty-four hours ago."

Claire frowned.

"Who?"

The investigator hesitated.

Then answered:

"The file was signed."

A pause.

"Alexander Ashford."

Silence.

The man who disappeared.

The man everyone thought was dead.

Had just started a war.

Vivienne suddenly looked terrified.

Because she knew something nobody else knew.

Alexander did not return to reclaim power.

He returned to destroy everything she built.

Later that night...

After investigators removed several boxes of documents...

After the guests left...

After the world began talking about the fall of the Ashford dynasty...

Claire stood alone in the empty ballroom.

The place where her daughter had been humiliated.

The place where she discovered her entire life was a lie.

Daniel approached slowly.

"I don't know if I deserve to ask this."

Claire looked at him.

"What?"

"Can I stay?"

The question surprised her.

Not because of the words.

Because of the honesty.

Seven years ago, Daniel demanded.

Tonight...

He asked.

Claire looked toward Sophie, sleeping safely in Nathaniel's arms.

Then back at Daniel.

"I don't know."

He nodded.

"I understand."

A silence passed.

Then Claire said:

"But for the first time..."

"I believe you are trying."

Daniel looked down.

That was not forgiveness.

Not yet.

But it was a beginning.

Then Nathaniel rushed into the room.

His face was pale.

"Claire."

She turned.

"What happened?"

He held a piece of paper.

A new message.

A new threat.

Written in a familiar handwriting.

Alexander's.

But the words were impossible.

"Claire, do not trust Nathaniel."

Claire froze.

Nathaniel stared at the message.

Because he knew what it meant.

Alexander was warning her.

Not about Vivienne.

Not about Daniel.

About him.

The man who claimed to protect her.

May you like

The man who had hidden the truth for twenty-eight years.

The man who might have been lying all along.
