CHAPTER 17 — The Man Who Claimed Her Empire

The message from Bennett Holdings remained on Claire's phone.
"Marcus Vale has filed a claim that he is the rightful owner of Bennett Holdings."
For several seconds...
Claire said nothing.
Not because she was surprised.
Because somewhere deep inside...
She had already felt it coming.
The betrayal.
The hidden agenda.
The person standing closest to her.
The person she trusted most.
Daniel watched her face.
"What happened?"
Claire slowly lowered the phone.
"Marcus."
The name alone changed the atmosphere.
Alexander, still lying in the hospital bed, opened his eyes.
He understood immediately.
"He made his move."
Claire looked at him.
"You knew this would happen."
Alexander nodded.
"I was hoping I was wrong."
A bitter smile crossed his face.
"But people like Marcus don't spend years hiding without a reason."
The emergency board meeting at Bennett Holdings began at noon.
Every major investor attended.
Executives.
Lawyers.
Board members.
People who had built their careers around Claire's success.
But when Claire entered the room...
She noticed something immediately.
The atmosphere was different.
People who once stood beside her now avoided eye contact.
Fear had entered the room.
And fear was powerful.
Marcus Vale stood at the end of the table.
Perfect suit.
Calm expression.
The same man who had helped her build everything.
He looked almost unchanged.
Almost.
Until Claire looked into his eyes.
Because behind the loyalty...
There was something else.
A lifetime of anger.
"Claire."
His voice was polite.
Almost respectful.
She stared at him.
"Marcus."
Nobody spoke.
The two people who created one of America's greatest companies were now standing on opposite sides.
The board chairman cleared his throat.
"We are here because Mr. Vale has submitted documents regarding ownership rights."
Claire looked at Marcus.
"Ownership rights?"
Marcus nodded.
"You should have known this day would come."
The sentence sounded familiar.
Everyone had been saying that lately.
Secrets waiting to surface.
"Explain."
Marcus placed a folder on the table.
"Your company was never created only by you."
Claire's expression remained calm.
"Nothing is created by one person."
Marcus smiled slightly.
"Exactly."
He opened the folder.
Inside were old documents.
Very old.
Documents connecting Bennett Holdings to Ashford family assets.
The room reacted.
"The company was funded by Ashford money?"
Claire looked at the papers.
She recognized some of them.
The early years.
The investors.
The emergency loans.
But she had never seen these agreements.
Marcus continued:
"When Bennett Holdings was founded, the initial capital came from a hidden Ashford trust."
Claire looked at him.
"That trust saved my company when nobody else believed in it."
"Yes."
"But it was never a gift."
Marcus pushed another document forward.
"It was an investment."
A pause.
"An investment made by the rightful heir."
Everyone looked at him.
Marcus said the words clearly:
"Me."
The room exploded.
Board members whispered.
Investors demanded explanations.
Claire remained silent.
Because the most painful part was not the accusation.
It was the fact that Marcus knew exactly where to attack.
He was not trying to prove he was better.
He was trying to rewrite history.
"You think you built this company because you were special."
Marcus's voice became colder.
"But you were chosen."
Claire looked at him.
"I built it."
Marcus shook his head.
"You were given the opportunity."
"No."
She stepped closer.
"I was given a chance."
"Then I worked."
"I failed."
"I started again."
"I fought."
Her voice grew stronger.
"Every building."
"Every contract."
"Every employee."
"Every hospital we helped."
"I built that."
The room became silent.
Because everyone knew.
Marcus had been there.
He knew.
He had watched her struggle.
He had watched her sacrifice.
And still...
He chose this.
Daniel stood beside Claire.
"Marcus."
Everyone looked at him.
"You know she is telling the truth."
Marcus looked at him.
A cold smile appeared.
"Of course you would defend her."
Daniel's expression hardened.
"Because she deserves it."
Marcus laughed softly.
"Interesting."
"The Ashford heir protecting the Bennett heir."
He looked around.
"Do you know what is funny?"
Nobody answered.
Marcus continued:
"For decades, both families fought over power."
"And now..."
"The two people who should have inherited everything are standing together."
Claire studied him.
"What do you want?"
Marcus looked directly at her.
"Everything."
The answer was immediate.
"No."
He smiled.
"Not money."
"Not the company."
"Not even the Ashford empire."
He stepped closer.
"I want recognition."
Claire frowned.
"For what?"
Marcus's expression changed.
"That I was the child they chose."
Silence.
And suddenly...
Claire understood.
This was not only about power.
It was about abandonment.
Marcus had spent his entire life believing he was the forgotten heir.
The replacement.
The second choice.
That night...
Claire returned to the hospital.
Alexander was awake.
"You spoke to him."
She nodded.
"Yes."
"What did you see?"
Claire looked out the window.
"A man who spent his entire life feeling invisible."
Alexander sighed.
"That was always his weakness."
Claire looked at him.
"You knew him."
"Yes."
"Did you know he would become like this?"
Alexander was quiet.
Then:
"I knew someone would."
Claire frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Alexander looked at her.
"The person controlling Marcus is not Marcus."
Claire froze.
"Then who?"
Alexander reached for another folder.
One he had hidden beneath his bed.
"I found this before I disappeared."
Inside was a photograph.
A meeting.
Marcus.
Vivienne.
And another person.
Someone Claire had never seen.
But Alexander recognized immediately.
"The person who started everything."
Claire looked at the photo.
"Who is that?"
Alexander answered:
"The founder of Vale Group."
"The person who created Marcus."
Claire looked closer.
Then her face changed.
Because the person in the photograph...
Was impossible.
A person who had supposedly died thirty years earlier.
A person connected to every secret.
Every betrayal.
Every disappearance.
Alexander whispered:
"The real architect of this war."
A pause.
"Your grandmother."
Claire froze.
"My grandmother?"
Alexander nodded.
"Not Margaret."
"Not Vivienne."
"Your other grandmother."
The room went silent.
"What was her name?"
Alexander looked at the photograph.
Then whispered:
"Victoria Bennett."
Claire stepped back.
Because the truth was no longer about the Ashfords.
It was about her own blood.
Her own family.
And the woman who had started the war...
Was the person whose blood ran through Claire's veins.
At that same moment...
Marcus stood in a private office.
The mysterious figure from the photograph appeared on the screen.
An older woman.
Cold eyes.
A powerful presence.
Marcus looked at her.
"She knows."
The woman smiled.
"Good."
Marcus frowned.
"Good?"
The woman nodded.
"Because now Claire will finally understand."
"Understand what?"
The woman's smile grew.
"That she was never meant to inherit anything."
A pause.
"She was meant to disappear."
Marcus looked uneasy.
"What's the next step?"
The woman answered:
"Bring me Sophie."
Marcus froze.
"Why?"
The woman's voice became cold.
"Because every empire has a weakness."
May you like
"And Claire Bennett's weakness..."
"Has always been her daughter."
