CHAPTER 13 — The Girl Who Changed Chicago

The message remained on the security screen.

SAINT MATTHEW'S HOSPITAL — ROOM 614

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Because everyone understood what that meant.

Room 614 was no longer just a hospital room.

It was the place where every secret began.

The place where Nathaniel Ashford supposedly died.

The place where Claire's mother disappeared.

The place where Vivienne destroyed a family.

And now...

The place where Vivienne wanted Claire to go.

Daniel stared at the screen.

"This is a trap."

Claire nodded.

"I know."

Nathaniel looked at her.

"Then you cannot go."

Claire turned.

For the first time that night, Nathaniel saw something different in her eyes.

Not anger.

Not fear.

Determination.

"I spent twenty-eight years living with unanswered questions."

She looked at the message.

"I'm done waiting."

Daniel stepped beside her.

"Then I'm coming with you."

Claire looked at him.

"You don't have to."

"I know."

A pause.

"But I want to."

For a moment, Claire saw something she had not seen in years.

The man she fell in love with.

Not the politician.

Not the Ashford heir.

Just Daniel.

The man who once held their daughter and promised to protect them.

She looked away.

"Then prove it."

Daniel nodded.

"How?"

"Don't protect the family name."

"Protect the truth."

His answer came immediately.

"I will."

Forty minutes later...

A convoy left Ashford Hall.

The city of Chicago watched from outside.

News cameras surrounded the property.

The scandal had already spread.

The Ashford dynasty was collapsing.

The woman who controlled the city's elite was under investigation.

A hidden heir had appeared.

A billionaire woman had revealed decades of family secrets.

But nobody knew the most shocking part.

The woman who exposed the Ashfords...

Was also one of them.

At Saint Matthew's Hospital...

Room 614 was empty.

Or at least...

It appeared empty.

The hospital administration had claimed the room had been closed after Nathaniel's death.

No records.

No patients.

No access.

But when Claire walked into the hallway...

She felt something.

A memory.

A feeling.

A place she had never returned to.

Daniel noticed.

"You okay?"

Claire looked at the door.

"No."

She touched the handle.

"I'm remembering."

She opened it.

The room was dark.

Old furniture.

Dust.

A place frozen in time.

On the wall...

A small photograph.

Claire walked closer.

Her breath stopped.

It was a photograph of her.

As a baby.

Beside her mother.

And beside them...

Alexander.

Her father.

But there was something else.

A fourth person.

A woman.

Claire stared.

"Who is she?"

Nathaniel looked at the photo.

His face changed.

"Margaret."

Everyone turned.

"The woman who raised Vivienne?"

Nathaniel nodded.

"No."

"Vivienne's mother."

The room became silent.

Claire looked closer.

A family photo.

A family nobody knew existed.

Then Daniel noticed something.

Behind the picture frame.

A small button.

He pressed it.

A hidden compartment opened.

Inside...

Was a recording device.

Old.

But preserved.

Claire picked it up.

The label said:

ROOM 614 — FINAL TESTIMONY

Nathaniel closed his eyes.

"I hoped nobody would find that."

Claire looked at him.

"You knew."

Nathaniel didn't answer.

That was enough.

Daniel's anger returned.

"How many more secrets?"

Nathaniel whispered:

"One."

Claire activated the recording.

A woman's voice filled the room.

Not Elizabeth.

Not Vivienne.

Someone older.

Someone unexpected.

Margaret.

Vivienne's mother.

"If you are hearing this..."

"Then my daughter failed."

Everyone froze.

The recording continued.

"I spent my life believing power was everything."

"I taught Vivienne that weakness was dangerous."

"I taught her that people were tools."

A pause.

"And I created the monster I feared."

Claire listened carefully.

The voice continued.

"But there is one thing Vivienne never knew."

"I kept evidence."

A document appeared on the screen built into the recording device.

A name.

A transaction.

A date.

Claire's expression changed.

Because she recognized it.

The same date her life changed.

The night she entered foster care.

Margaret continued:

"Vivienne did not act alone."

"Someone paid her."

Daniel whispered:

"Who?"

The recording continued.

"The person who wanted Claire erased..."

Static interrupted.

Then the final words:

"Was the person who created the Ashford family fortune."

The recording ended.

Silence.

Nobody spoke.

Because the implication was impossible.

The Ashford empire itself...

Was built on a secret.

Suddenly, Claire's phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

A voice appeared.

An older man's voice.

Weak.

But familiar.

Her entire body froze.

Because she knew that voice.

She had heard it only once.

In the recording.

"Claire."

She could not speak.

The voice continued.

"I know you have questions."

Tears filled her eyes.

"Who are you?"

A pause.

Then:

"The man who should have found you twenty-eight years ago."

Her heart stopped.

"Alexander?"

Daniel and Nathaniel looked at her.

She put the phone on speaker.

The voice answered:

"Yes."

Silence.

The impossible became real.

Claire whispered:

"Where are you?"

Alexander replied:

"Close."

A pause.

"But before you see me..."

"You need to know something."

"What?"

His voice became serious.

"Vivienne did not run because she was afraid of the investigation."

"She ran because she discovered the final evidence."

Claire tightened her grip on the phone.

"What evidence?"

Alexander answered:

"The evidence proving who really destroyed our family."

Everyone waited.

Then Alexander said:

"Claire..."

"Your enemy was never Vivienne."

A pause.

"It was your grandfather."

Every person in Room 614 froze.

Nathaniel stepped backward.

"No."

Alexander continued:

"And I can prove it."

The call ended.

Claire slowly turned.

Toward Nathaniel.

The man who had called her granddaughter.

The man who claimed to protect her.

The man who had hidden her entire life.

And for the first time...

May you like

She wondered if the greatest betrayal had not come from her enemies.

But from the person who claimed to love her.
