CHAPTER 4 — The Ashford Family War Begins

The file appeared on the giant screen.
No one moved.
No one spoke.
The words burned against the black background.
CONFESSION — VIVIENNE ASHFORD
RECORDED: SEVEN YEARS AGO
For the first time that evening...
Vivienne Ashford looked uncertain.
Not angry.
Not arrogant.
Uncertain.
Because she knew exactly what was inside that recording.
And she knew everyone in the room was about to hear the one thing she had spent seven years burying.
The truth.
"Turn it off."
Her voice cut sharply through the ballroom.
But nobody obeyed.
Not anymore.
The guards who once followed her every command now stood frozen.
They looked at Claire.
They looked at Nathaniel.
They waited.
Vivienne noticed.
And that hurt her more than anything.
For thirty years, people moved when she spoke.
Tonight...
They waited for someone else.
Claire stood beside Sophie, one hand resting protectively on her daughter's shoulder.
She did not smile.
She did not celebrate.
Because this was never about revenge.
It was about justice.
Nathaniel looked toward the screen.
"Play it."
The system activated.
A quiet sound filled the ballroom.
Then...
A younger Vivienne appeared.
Seven years earlier.
Sitting inside her private office at Ashford Manor.
Her hair was darker.
Her expression was exactly the same.
Cold.
Controlled.
A woman who believed she was above consequences.
The camera angle suggested a hidden recording.
Someone had placed it there secretly.
Vivienne looked directly at someone outside the frame.
"You don't understand what is at stake."
The room listened.
Her voice continued.
"The Ashford name is not built on love."
"It is built on control."
Daniel's face changed.
Because those words came from his own mother.
Vivienne continued.
"My son is too emotional."
"He thinks he can choose happiness."
"He thinks he can marry anyone he wants."
She laughed.
"He doesn't understand what people like us sacrifice for power."
Claire's fingers tightened around Sophie's hand.
Daniel looked away.
Because suddenly...
He remembered.
All the times his mother called Claire a distraction.
All the times she said love made him weak.
The recording continued.
"Claire Bennett is dangerous."
A whisper moved through the crowd.
Vivienne's younger self leaned closer.
"Not because she has money."
"Not because she has influence."
"Because my son becomes a different person around her."
Silence.
Even Vivienne in the present looked uncomfortable.
Because everyone heard it.
She wasn't afraid of Claire's wealth.
She was afraid of losing Daniel's loyalty.
The recording continued.
"The child is the problem."
Daniel stopped breathing.
Sophie looked confused.
Claire immediately pulled her closer.
Vivienne's voice filled the room.
"If that baby exists publicly..."
"Daniel will never leave her."
"And if Daniel doesn't leave her..."
"The Ashford legacy ends."
A collective gasp.
Nathaniel closed his eyes.
Pain crossed his face.
He had suspected.
But hearing it...
Was different.
The recording continued.
"I already prepared the solution."
A folder appeared in the video.
The same type of folder Vivienne had given Claire years ago.
"Claire will believe she has no choice."
"She will leave."
"Daniel will think she abandoned him."
"And the Ashford family will survive."
The video stopped.
For three seconds...
Nobody moved.
Then the ballroom erupted.
"She did that?"
"She separated them?"
"She threatened a mother?"
People who once admired Vivienne now looked at her like a stranger.
But Claire noticed something.
The recording was not complete.
There was more.
She turned toward the screen.
"Continue."
Everyone looked at her.
Vivienne's eyes narrowed.
"No."
Claire looked at the technician.
"Continue."
The file played again.
A second recording appeared.
The date was later.
The night Nathaniel supposedly died.
Saint Matthew's Hospital.
Room 614.
Vivienne entered.
Nathaniel was lying in bed.
Weak.
But awake.
The old man in the video looked nothing like the helpless person Vivienne had described.
He looked alert.
Aware.
Vivienne stood beside him.
"You should have stayed out of this."
Nathaniel's voice came.
"You destroyed your own family."
Vivienne smiled.
"I saved it."
Nathaniel looked disgusted.
"You stole my grandson's daughter from him."
"I protected the Ashford name."
"You broke Daniel."
"He will recover."
Nathaniel laughed bitterly.
"No."
"He will spend his life wondering why the woman he loved disappeared."
"And the child he loved never called him father."
Vivienne's expression hardened.
Then she said the words that shocked everyone.
"Daniel was never supposed to know."
The room froze.
Claire felt her heart stop.
Daniel looked at the screen.
"Never supposed to know what?"
The recording continued.
Vivienne opened a document.
"The DNA test."
Nathaniel's eyes narrowed.
"What did you do?"
Vivienne smiled.
"I changed the result."
A wave of horror moved through the ballroom.
Daniel stepped backward.
"No..."
Nathaniel in the video stared at her.
"You altered a paternity test?"
Vivienne remained calm.
"I altered what needed to be altered."
"But why?"
Nathaniel asked.
And her answer destroyed everything.
"Because Daniel was never your true heir."
Silence.
The video stopped.
The ballroom became completely still.
Daniel stared at the screen.
"What did she mean?"
Nobody answered.
Even Vivienne looked frightened now.
Nathaniel slowly turned toward his daughter-in-law.
"Tell them."
Vivienne said nothing.
Nathaniel's voice became stronger.
"Tell them why you spent your entire life protecting the Ashford name."
"Tell them why you feared Daniel becoming head of the family."
"Tell them who you really are."
Daniel looked between them.
"Mother?"
Vivienne looked at him.
And for the first time...
She looked less like a queen.
And more like someone cornered.
"You want the truth?"
She laughed softly.
"Fine."
She looked around the room.
"You all worship the Ashford bloodline."
"But the truth is..."
She pointed toward Daniel.
"Daniel Ashford is not Nathaniel Ashford's biological son."
The room exploded.
Daniel froze.
Claire stared.
Sophie held onto her mother.
Nathaniel closed his eyes.
Because the secret he had protected for decades...
Was finally exposed.
Vivienne continued.
"And that means..."
She looked at Sophie.
"That little girl is not the heir you think she is."
Nathaniel's expression changed.
Because he understood.
Vivienne was not finished.
She was preparing her final attack.
But Claire stepped forward.
"You are forgetting something."
Everyone looked at her.
Claire picked up the blue folder.
"The Ashford inheritance is not based only on blood."
Vivienne frowned.
"What?"
Claire opened another document.
"The Ashford Trust agreement."
Nathaniel looked surprised.
"You found it?"
Claire nodded.
"I didn't find it."
"I was given it."
Everyone waited.
"By Nathaniel."
The old man smiled.
"Seven years ago."
Vivienne's face changed.
Claire continued:
"Before Room 614."
"Before your plan."
"Before you tried to erase my daughter."
"Nathaniel created a protection clause."
Robert took the document.
His eyes widened.
"What does it say?"
Claire looked at Sophie.
Then at Vivienne.
And calmly answered:
"If anyone attempts to remove Daniel's child from the Ashford bloodline..."
"The entire Ashford estate transfers to the child."
A stunned silence.
Vivienne's face turned pale.
Because suddenly...
The little girl she called "street trash"...
Was the person who could inherit everything.
Nathaniel looked at Sophie.
"My granddaughter."
Then he looked at the room.
"The rightful heir of Ashford."
The chandeliers above them flickered.
The doors remained locked.
And Vivienne Ashford finally understood the nightmare she had created.
The child she tried to erase...
Was the one person who could destroy her empire.
But before anyone could speak...
A phone rang.
Everyone turned.
It came from Vivienne's handbag.
She looked down.
The screen showed one message.
One sentence.
May you like
And the color disappeared from her face.
"The second heir has arrived."
