CHAPTER 2 — The Secret Hidden in Room 614

The ballroom had never been this quiet.
Not during presidential dinners.
Not during billion-dollar negotiations.
Not even during funerals of Chicago's most powerful families.
Because everyone understood one thing.
A dynasty was collapsing.
And it was collapsing in front of witnesses.
Vivienne Ashford stood beneath the golden lights of Ashford Hall, surrounded by people who had spent decades admiring her.
The same people who once fought for an invitation to her charity events.
The same people who laughed at her jokes.
The same people who called her "Chicago's queen of influence."
Now...
Nobody moved toward her.
Nobody defended her.
Because power was beautiful when it belonged to someone else.
But when power began to fall...
Everyone wanted to step away.
Vivienne looked at Nathaniel Ashford.
Her own father-in-law.
The man whose empire had built the Ashford name.
The man she had convinced the world was dead.
Her voice was low.
"You shouldn't be here."
Nathaniel stared at her from his wheelchair.
"That is exactly what you wanted."
The words struck harder than a scream.
Vivienne's eyes narrowed.
"You have no idea what you are talking about."
Nathaniel smiled sadly.
"I know more than anyone."
He looked around the ballroom.
"I know who changed my medication."
"I know who transferred money through shell companies."
"I know who deleted security footage from Saint Matthew's Hospital."
The crowd reacted instantly.
Saint Matthew's Hospital.
The same hospital where Nathaniel supposedly died.
The same hospital where Sophie claimed she met him.
The same hospital where the necklace was supposedly given.
Claire stood still.
Her fingers wrapped around Sophie's hand.
She had questions.
Thousands of them.
But she waited.
Because for seven years...
She had learned something.
The truth always came with a price.
And tonight...
Someone was finally paying it.
Daniel stepped forward.
"Grandfather."
His voice was broken.
"What are you saying?"
Nathaniel looked at him.
A painful disappointment crossed his face.
"I am saying that your mother destroyed your life before you even realized it."
Daniel looked toward Vivienne.
"No."
The denial came too quickly.
Claire noticed.
People always denied the truth fastest when it touched something they secretly feared.
Vivienne immediately moved closer to Daniel.
"Don't listen to him."
"He is confused."
Nathaniel laughed quietly.
"Confused?"
"You spent three months telling the world I was losing my mind."
"You told doctors I was suffering from dementia."
"You told my lawyers I could no longer make decisions."
His eyes hardened.
"But I was never confused."
The ballroom held its breath.
Nathaniel pointed toward the black envelope still in Claire's hand.
"Open it."
Claire looked at him.
"What is inside?"
"The reason Sophie was hidden."
"The reason Daniel abandoned you."
"And the reason Vivienne Ashford has spent seven years trying to erase a little girl."
Every person in the room leaned closer.
Claire slowly opened the envelope.
Inside was a stack of documents.
The first page.
A hospital report.
The second.
A financial transfer.
The third.
A photograph.
Claire froze.
Because she recognized the photograph immediately.
It was taken seven years ago.
Outside Saint Matthew's Hospital.
She was standing there.
Holding newborn Sophie.
And beside her...
Was Daniel.
Smiling.
Happy.
A family.
Before everything was destroyed.
Claire turned the page.
Then her expression changed.
Nathaniel watched her carefully.
"What does it say?"
Vivienne demanded.
Claire did not answer.
Because she was reading a name.
A name she had never expected to see.
"Project Phoenix."
Daniel frowned.
"What is that?"
Nathaniel looked at him.
"You don't remember?"
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
"Because your mother made sure you wouldn't."
Vivienne's face turned cold.
"Enough."
She walked toward the folder.
"I will not stand here while a dying old man creates a fantasy."
But before she could reach Claire...
The security system activated.
A loud mechanical sound echoed throughout Ashford Hall.
The massive doors locked automatically.
Everyone turned.
Claire looked at the security guards.
Then calmly said:
"Nobody leaves."
The same words she had spoken earlier.
"Lock every door."
Now everyone understood.
She had not been making a threat.
She had been preparing.
Vivienne stared at her.
"You planned this."
Claire looked at her.
"No."
"I prepared for the possibility that you would lie."
Nathaniel smiled.
"That is why I chose her."
Daniel looked confused.
"Chose her for what?"
Nathaniel looked at Sophie.
"For the Ashford legacy."
A wave of shock moved through the room.
Vivienne laughed.
"You cannot leave the Ashford empire to her."
"She is a child."
Nathaniel nodded.
"Exactly."
"Unlike adults..."
"She has not been corrupted yet."
Nobody spoke.
Then Robert Langley stepped forward.
"Mr. Ashford..."
His voice trembled.
"There is one thing I don't understand."
Nathaniel looked at him.
"What?"
"If Sophie is Daniel's daughter..."
"Why did you hide the truth for seven years?"
The old man's expression changed.
Pain.
Regret.
Guilt.
All appeared at once.
"Because I failed."
Claire looked at him.
Nathaniel continued.
"When Claire gave birth, Vivienne threatened her."
"She told her that if she stayed, Daniel's political career would be destroyed."
"She threatened to use the Ashford family's influence to take Sophie away."
Claire's eyes hardened.
"She said she would make sure I never saw my daughter again."
The room became silent.
Nathaniel lowered his head.
"I believed I could stop her."
"But I underestimated my own daughter-in-law."
He looked at Daniel.
"And I underestimated my grandson's weakness."
Daniel flinched.
Because it was true.
He had not protected Claire.
He had not protected Sophie.
He had chosen silence.
And silence had destroyed everything.
Suddenly...
A voice came from the side of the room.
"That's not the whole story."
Everyone turned.
A woman in a black dress stepped forward.
She was older.
Elegant.
Terrified.
Vivienne's former assistant.
Margaret Ellis.
Vivienne's face changed.
"You."
Margaret looked down.
"I stayed silent for seven years."
"Because I was afraid."
She looked at Claire.
"But that little girl deserves the truth."
Vivienne took a step forward.
"Margaret, think carefully."
Margaret shook her head.
"I already spent seven years regretting."
She reached into her purse.
And removed a small recorder.
Daniel stared.
"What is that?"
Margaret pressed the button.
A voice filled the ballroom.
Vivienne's voice.
Seven years younger.
Clear.
Cold.
Cruel.
"Make Claire disappear."
"The child cannot exist."
"If Daniel finds out, everything falls apart."
The recording continued.
"I don't care what it costs."
"No Bennett woman will destroy the Ashford name."
The room went completely still.
Claire closed her eyes.
Because hearing the voice again...
After seven years...
Still hurt.
Sophie looked up at her mother.
"Mom..."
Claire knelt.
She hugged her daughter.
"I’m okay."
But for the first time...
Everyone saw the truth.
Claire Bennett was not the woman who came seeking revenge.
She was the woman who survived.
Vivienne looked around.
Her empire was cracking.
But then...
She smiled.
A slow, dangerous smile.
Because even now...
She still believed she had one final weapon.
"You think you have won?"
She looked directly at Claire.
"You have no idea what happened in Room 614."
Nathaniel's expression changed.
For the first time tonight...
He looked worried.
Vivienne continued.
"Because the night Nathaniel supposedly died..."
"He didn't just leave a message."
"He met someone."
Someone gasped.
Daniel stared.
"Who?"
Vivienne looked at Claire.
Then at Sophie.
And whispered:
"The person who gave Nathaniel the necklace..."
"Was not Claire."
The ballroom froze.
"The person who gave him that necklace..."
"Was Sophie's real mother."
Claire's blood turned cold.
Because there was only one possible meaning.
Vivienne was claiming...
Sophie was not her daughter.
May you like
And somewhere inside Room 614...
A secret existed that could destroy everything.
