Chapter 8 — The Night Noah Was Born

At 8:37 the next morning, Michael Carter stood outside the Carter Foundation.
The building had been closed for renovations for almost two years.
At least, that was what the public believed.
Michael knew better now.
The moment he entered, the security doors unlocked automatically.
No badge.
No code.
No fingerprint.
They simply opened.
Frank looked at him.
“Someone wants us inside.”
Michael nodded.
Emily held her father's old notebook against her chest.
“Or someone wants us dead.”
They entered.
The lobby was empty.
Dust covered the marble floor.
Portraits of Carter family members lined the walls.
William.
Richard.
Elizabeth.
And finally—
Michael.
His photograph had been added only six months ago.
Under it were three words:
HEIR OF 214.
Michael stopped.
“What does that mean?”
Emily looked at the portrait.
“You were never supposed to inherit the company.”
Michael turned.
“What?”
“Richard wanted your father to name him successor.”
“But my father chose me.”
“No.”
Emily shook her head.
“Your father didn't choose you.”
She pointed at the photograph.
“He was forced to.”
Michael stared.
“By whom?”
Emily didn't answer.
The lights flickered.
A projector turned on.
A recording began.
William appeared on the wall.
Younger.
Healthier.
Standing in the same lobby.
His voice echoed through the empty building.
“If Michael is watching this, then everything has gone wrong.”
Michael stepped closer.
William continued.
“Son, there are things I couldn't tell you.”
The video changed.
A hospital.
Thirty years earlier.
A woman in labor.
Elizabeth.
Michael's mother.
Beside her stood William.
And a nurse held a newborn.
Michael stared.
“That isn't me.”
Emily looked at the screen.
“No.”
The video showed a second baby.
Then a third.
Three newborn boys.
Michael's expression changed.
“Triplets?”
William's recorded voice continued.
“Only one was registered.”
The video paused.
One baby was marked:
MICHAEL CARTER.
The second:
214-A.
The third:
214-B.
Michael felt sick.
“What happened to the others?”
The recording continued.
“Richard believed the Carter bloodline needed redundancy.”
Michael's fists clenched.
“Redundancy?”
Emily whispered:
“Backups.”
William nodded in the video.
“He wanted children who could be substituted into powerful families if something happened to the original heir.”
Michael stared in horror.
“People.”
William continued.
“Richard called them assets.”
The video changed.
Rows of files.
Hundreds.
Children.
Names.
Birth dates.
Photographs.
Medical records.
School records.
Everything.
Michael saw one familiar name.
ANNA REED.
Emily gasped.
The screen changed again.
Anna at age four.
Then five.
Then seven.
Then twelve.
Then sixteen.
Alive.
Growing.
Somewhere.
Michael looked at Emily.
“She was monitored.”
Emily covered her mouth.
“She was alive all this time.”
A new document appeared.
SUBJECT 214-B — FEMALE.
Michael frowned.
“That's not Anna.”
Emily looked closer.
“No.”
Another photograph appeared.
A teenage girl.
Then a medical record.
Then a name.
CLAIRE ELIZABETH MORGAN.
Michael's heart stopped.
Claire.
The video showed her as a child.
Then a teenager.
Then the woman Michael had married.
William's voice returned.
“Claire discovered the network because she was one of its original subjects.”
Michael whispered:
“What?”
“She was never born a Carter.”
The screen went black.
Then another video began.
Claire.
Pregnant.
Michael watched her place both hands over her stomach.
She looked directly into the camera.
“If you're seeing this, Michael, I'm sorry.”
Michael's eyes burned.
“I wanted to tell you.”
Claire continued.
“But they were watching.”
She took a breath.
“The night Noah was born, they came for him.”
Michael's breathing stopped.
“I fought them.”
The video showed a hospital corridor.
Men in dark uniforms.
A nurse opening a secured door.
Claire being wheeled toward an operating room.
Michael remembered that night.
He had been downstairs signing paperwork.
His phone had been taken by security.
He had been told everything was normal.
Then—
the alarm.
The doctors running.
Noah crying.
And finally the baby being placed in his arms.
But now he saw what had happened behind the scenes.
The recording showed a second operating room.
A nurse carrying another newborn.
The baby's face was hidden.
A man stood beside her.
Michael leaned toward the screen.
He recognized him.
David Mercer.
His security chief.
David looked at the newborn.
Then said:
“Transfer him.”
Michael's blood turned cold.
Emily whispered:
“That's Noah.”
Michael shook his head.
“No.”
The timestamp appeared.
2:17 A.M.
Twenty minutes before Noah's recorded birth.
The nurse handed the baby to David.
David carried him through a hidden corridor.
Then the screen changed.
The baby was placed inside a small transport chamber.
Temperature controlled.
Monitored.
A label appeared:
SUBJECT 214-C.
Michael stared.
“Subject?”
Emily's face went pale.
Then Claire appeared again.
Her voice was barely above a whisper.
“Michael, the baby you brought home that night…”
She stopped.
Michael's heart pounded.
Claire continued:
“Wasn't the baby they took.”
Silence.
Michael couldn't speak.
Emily slowly turned toward him.
“What does that mean?”
The video showed two newborns.
One marked 214-C.
The other marked CARTER — NOAH.
They looked almost identical.
Michael stepped backward.
“No.”
Claire's voice continued:
“They created a duplicate.”
Michael stared at the screen.
“A duplicate?”
Claire nodded.
“They needed a child who could be used as leverage.”
Michael's face went white.
“So the baby in my house…”
“Is Noah.”
Michael looked at Emily.
“Then who was the other baby?”
The lights suddenly shut off.
A voice came from behind them.
“That's the question you've been asking all along.”
Michael spun around.
A man stood at the entrance.
Gray hair.
Black coat.
Calm expression.
Alive.
William Carter.
Michael raised his gun.
His father didn't move.
William looked at him.
“You finally came home, son.”
Michael's voice shook with rage.
“Where is my child?”
William stared at him.
Then slowly answered:
“Which one?”
A gunshot shattered the silence.
The screen went black.

And somewhere beneath the Carter Foundation—
a baby's cry echoed through the walls.
