Chapter 12 — The Truth About My First Wife

The mansion looked exactly as Michael remembered.

Elegant.

Silent.

Untouched.

That was what made it terrifying.

Michael entered through the front doors with Noah in Emily's arms.

Frank locked the doors behind them.

David checked the security system.

Nothing.

No alarms.

No cameras.

No guards.

The entire estate appeared abandoned.

Michael looked around.

“This isn't right.”

Emily held Noah tighter.

“Why?”

“Someone knew we were coming.”

Frank nodded.

“He wanted us here.”

Michael stared toward the staircase.

The nursery was upstairs.

He began walking.

Every step felt heavier than the last.

At the top of the stairs, he stopped.

The nursery door was open.

Inside, everything looked normal.

The crib.

The toys.

The curtains.

The rocking chair.

Except for one thing.

The wall behind the crib had been opened.

A narrow black passage disappeared into darkness.

Emily whispered:

“That wasn't there before.”

Michael stepped toward it.

A voice came from behind them.

“Because you were never supposed to see it.”

Michael turned.

Claire.

Standing at the end of the hallway.

Alive.

Michael couldn't breathe.

For three seconds, neither moved.

Then Claire whispered:

“Michael.”

He walked toward her.

Slowly.

Like one sudden movement might make her disappear again.

“You're alive.”

Claire nodded.

“I am.”

He stopped inches from her.

“You let me bury you.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“I didn't.”

“You let me believe you were dead.”

“They threatened you.”

“You should have come home.”

“I tried.”

“When?”

“Every day.”

Michael's face broke.

“Why didn't you?”

Claire looked at Noah.

“Because of him.”

Emily slowly stepped aside.

Claire saw the baby.

Her expression changed completely.

She covered her mouth.

“Noah.”

She stepped closer.

Her fingers trembled.

Michael watched her.

“You know him.”

Claire looked at him.

“He's my son.”

The room went silent.

Michael's voice barely came out.

“I thought…”

“You were told I died before he was born.”

“Yes.”

“I didn't.”

Claire looked down.

“I carried him.”

Michael stared.

The impossible truth finally made sense.

The medical records.

The genetic file.

The photographs.

The dates that never fit.

Claire hadn't died three years ago.

She had been kidnapped while pregnant.

And Noah had been born in captivity.

Michael's voice shook.

“Then why did the hospital records say he was born six months ago?”

Claire looked at Elizabeth.

“Because Richard needed Michael to believe the baby had been born normally.”

Michael frowned.

Claire continued.

“The original pregnancy was hidden.”

She touched Noah's cheek.

“Richard discovered I was carrying a Carter heir.”

“He wanted Noah.”

“No.”

Claire shook her head.

“He wanted Michael.”

Michael stared at her.

“Why?”

“Because Project 214 needed an heir who could legally control the Carter foundation.”

Michael understood.

“My inheritance.”

“Your DNA.”

Claire paused.

“And your access.”

She looked toward the hidden passage.

“Everything Richard built required one thing.”

“What?”

“A Carter heir.”

Michael looked at Noah.

“And that's why he wants him.”

“No.”

Claire shook her head.

“He wants Noah because Noah can open something you cannot.”

Michael frowned.

“What?”

Claire pointed toward the wall.

“Your father's vault.”

Michael stared.

“My father had a vault?”

“Under the mansion.”

William appeared behind them.

He looked at Claire.

“You shouldn't have come back.”

Claire turned.

“I had to.”

William's face was filled with regret.

Michael looked between them.

“How long have you two known each other?”

Claire answered.

“Since before your wedding.”

Michael stared.

“What?”

“I met your father while investigating Project 214.”

“You knew him before me?”

“Yes.”

“And you never told me.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

Michael laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

Claire stepped closer.

“Michael, listen to me.”

He did.

“Your father wasn't the architect.”

Michael looked at William.

“Richard was.”

“Yes.”

“Then what did my father do?”

Claire's voice softened.

“He tried to destroy it.”

Michael looked at William.

William nodded.

“I failed.”

Claire continued.

“He created a second network.”

Michael's eyes widened.

“A network inside the network.”

“Yes.”

“That was Project 214?”

“No.”

Claire shook her head.

“That was Project 215.”

Michael stared.

“What was Project 215?”

Claire looked toward Noah.

“Escape.”

Michael felt a chill.

“Escape?”

“William created a system to extract children from Richard's network.”

Claire pointed toward the hidden passage.

“That passage was one of the escape routes.”

Emily suddenly stepped forward.

“My father helped build it.”

Claire nodded.

“Yes.”

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

“Then Anna…”

“Was supposed to be rescued.”

“What happened?”

Claire looked away.

“Someone betrayed us.”

Emily whispered:

“Who?”

Claire's eyes moved toward Frank.

Frank lowered his head.

Emily stared at him.

“You?”

Frank shook his head.

“No.”

Claire said quietly:

“It wasn't Frank.”

Michael looked at her.

“Then who?”

Claire walked toward the old family portrait hanging above the fireplace.

She touched the frame.

“There was one person who knew every secret.”

Michael followed her gaze.

The portrait showed the Carter family.

William.

Elizabeth.

Richard.

Michael.

And one figure standing behind them.

An older man.

Michael stared.

“Who is that?”

William's face turned pale.

Claire whispered:

“Your grandfather.”

Michael shook his head.

“My grandfather died before I was born.”

William said:

“That is what we were told.”

Claire removed the portrait from the wall.

Behind it was a hidden compartment.

Inside sat an old metal box.

She opened it.

There was one document.

A birth certificate.

Michael picked it up.

His eyes widened.

The name wasn't his.

It belonged to another child.

MATTHEW CARTER.

Date of birth:

The same day as Michael.

Michael stared at the paper.

“Who is Matthew?”

Claire looked at him.

“Your brother.”

Then she placed another photograph on the table.

A young man.

About Michael's age.

Same eyes.

Same jaw.

Same unmistakable Carter features.

Michael's hands began to shake.

“He's alive.”

Claire nodded.

“He has been living under another name for twenty-seven years.”

Michael looked at her.

“Where?”

Claire's voice dropped.

“Inside your company.”

Michael's blood turned cold.

“Who?”

Claire whispered the name.

“Your chief financial officer.”

Michael stared at her.

The man he had trusted with every dollar in his empire.

Claire looked toward the hidden passage.

“And he's been waiting for you to discover the truth.”

Suddenly every light in the mansion turned red.

The security system activated.

A voice echoed through the house.

Not Richard.

Not William.

Not Elizabeth.

A voice Michael had heard every morning for years.

His CFO.

His closest business adviser.

The man who had helped build his empire.

“Hello, Michael.”

A pause.

“It's time you met your brother.”

May you like

The nursery door slammed shut.

And Noah suddenly began crying.
