Chapter 6 — My Wife Never Died in an Accident

Michael didn't sleep.

He couldn't.

For the next three hours, he sat in the abandoned house staring at the photograph.

His father.

A newborn.

A hospital room.

Twenty-seven years ago.

And the same symbol.

214.

Frank had searched every room twice.

Emily had checked every entrance.

But Elizabeth was gone.

No broken window.

No forced door.

No footprints in the snow.

She had simply vanished.

Michael finally looked at Emily.

“Tell me everything.”

Emily remained silent.

“Emily.”

She slowly sat across from him.

“There is something I never told you.”

Michael's expression hardened.

“What?”

“My father didn't investigate the Carter family.”

Michael stared.

“He investigated Claire.”

The room went still.

“What do you mean?”

Emily pulled a small flash drive from her pocket.

“He believed your wife never died.”

Michael's throat tightened.

“That's impossible.”

“I thought so too.”

She connected the drive to an old laptop.

A folder appeared.

PROJECT 214 — FINAL PHASE.

Emily opened it.

The first document contained a photograph.

Claire.

Alive.

Michael stared at the screen.

The photograph had been taken two months after the official date of her death.

Claire was standing outside a small clinic in Vermont.

Pregnant.

Michael stopped breathing.

“No.”

Emily looked at him.

“She was alive.”

Michael shook his head.

“I identified her body.”

“You identified a body.”

He turned toward her.

“What are you saying?”

Emily opened another file.

DNA results.

The woman buried under Claire's name was not Claire.

Michael's entire world shifted.

“She was replaced.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Emily looked at the screen.

“Because Claire discovered what Project 214 really was.”

Michael remembered the night of the accident.

Rain.

Broken glass.

Police lights.

The funeral.

The coffin.

The endless months afterward.

He had believed he had lost her.

But now—

He understood.

Someone had wanted him to believe that.

Another video opened.

Claire appeared on screen.

Older.

Exhausted.

Her hair was shorter.

Her face thinner.

But her eyes were unmistakable.

Michael leaned closer.

Claire looked directly into the camera.

“If Michael ever sees this, tell him I didn't leave him.”

Michael's eyes filled with tears.

Claire continued.

“I was taken.”

The video paused.

Then resumed.

“I discovered that Richard wasn't acting alone. William knew about Project 214. He tried to stop it. But by the time he understood what Richard had built, it was already too late.”

Michael whispered:

“My father…”

Claire continued.

“He tried to save me.”

A second file opened automatically.

A list of names.

Doctors.

Lawyers.

Security officers.

Government officials.

Private investigators.

Bankers.

One name appeared repeatedly.

DAVID MERCER.

Michael stared.

His security chief had been involved from the beginning.

Emily opened another document.

There was Claire's medical record.

Pregnancy.

The date was three years before Noah's birth.

Michael's hands began shaking.

“What is this?”

Emily looked at him.

“Claire was carrying a child.”

Michael couldn't speak.

The room seemed to tilt.

“Whose child?”

Emily didn't answer.

Michael stared at the screen.

Then he saw the next line.

BIOLOGICAL FATHER: MICHAEL CARTER.

His breath caught.

The child had been his.

Claire's.

Their child.

The baby had never been mentioned in any record.

Michael whispered:

“Where is the child?”

Emily's eyes lowered.

“We don't know.”

Michael slammed his hand against the table.

“You knew?”

“No.”

“My wife was pregnant with my child and nobody told me?”

“I found the file three months ago.”

“You should have told me.”

“I couldn't.”

“Why?”

Emily finally looked at him.

“Because someone was watching me.”

Michael froze.

“Who?”

She turned the laptop around.

A photograph appeared.

Emily leaving Michael's mansion.

Someone was following her.

Another photograph.

Emily buying groceries.

Another.

Emily standing outside her father's house.

Then the final photograph.

Emily holding a little girl.

Michael stared.

“Your daughter.”

Emily's face crumpled.

“Anna.”

“The girl you said died.”

“She didn't die.”

Michael's expression changed.

“What happened?”

Emily whispered:

“They took her.”

“When?”

“Sixteen years ago.”

Michael looked at the screen.

A file appeared beside the photograph.

SUBJECT: ANNA REED.

STATUS: ACTIVE.

LOCATION: UNKNOWN.

Then another line appeared.

TRANSFERRED TO CARTER NETWORK — AGE 4.

Michael slowly stood.

“Richard took her.”

Emily shook her head.

“No.”

“Then who?”

She pointed to the final page.

There was a signature.

Michael recognized it.

His father's.

WILLIAM CARTER.

Michael stepped backward.

“No.”

Emily's voice broke.

“Your father signed the transfer order.”

Michael stared at the signature.

Everything he believed about his family was collapsing.

His mother had disappeared.

His father was alive.

His wife had never died.

His security chief was working for someone.

Emily's daughter had been taken.

And somehow—

all of it connected to Project 214.

Then the laptop chimed.

A new video appeared.

Michael clicked it.

Claire was sitting in a dark room.

This time, she was crying.

Not from fear.

From exhaustion.

“Michael…”

She looked directly into the camera.

“If you're watching this, they've already told you I'm dead.”

Michael's chest tightened.

Claire continued.

“But there's something you must know.”

She placed one hand over her stomach.

“The child they think belongs to the Carter family…”

She paused.

“He doesn't.”

Michael stared.

Claire whispered:

“He belongs to the person who built Project 214.”

The screen went black.

Michael couldn't move.

Emily whispered:

“What does that mean?”

Then the laptop displayed a final message.

LIVE CONNECTION ESTABLISHED.

A face appeared.

An older man.

Gray hair.

Cold eyes.

Michael recognized him instantly.

His father.

William Carter.

William looked directly into the camera.

And said:

“Hello, son.”

Michael's blood ran cold.

William leaned closer.

“I know where Noah is.”

A pause.

“And I know who his real mother is.”

Michael stepped toward the screen.

“Where is my son?”

William's expression hardened.

“First, you need to hear the truth about Claire.”

The connection suddenly distorted.

William's last words came through in fragments:

“Your wife didn't die…”

Static.

“…she was taken…”

More static.

“…because she discovered…”

The screen went black.

Then a single sentence appeared.

CLAIRE CARTER IS ALIVE.
