Chapter 7 — The Secret Emily Had Been Hiding

The words remained on the screen.
CLAIRE CARTER IS ALIVE.
Michael stared at them until the letters blurred.
His wife.
The woman he had buried three years ago.
The woman whose grave he had visited every anniversary.
The woman whose wedding ring he had kept locked inside his bedroom drawer.
Alive.
Emily stood behind him.
She looked terrified.
Not surprised.
Terrified.
Michael slowly turned around.
“You knew.”
Emily didn't answer.
His voice became colder.
“You knew Claire was alive.”
“I suspected.”
“That isn't what I asked.”
Emily looked down.
Michael stepped closer.
“How long?”
“Eight months.”
His face hardened.
“Eight months?”
“I didn't know where she was.”
“But you knew she was alive.”
“I knew someone using her identity was alive.”
Michael slammed his hand onto the table.
“Stop protecting me!”
Emily flinched.
“I've spent three years believing my wife was dead.”
“I know.”
“I mourned her.”
“I know.”
“I raised her child alone.”
Emily's eyes filled with tears.
“And I know that too.”
Michael froze.
“What did you just say?”
Emily looked away.
Michael's voice dropped.
“Her child?”
Emily closed her eyes.
“That was a mistake.”
“No.”
Michael stepped closer.
“Say it again.”
Emily didn't.
Michael stared at her.
“You said her child.”
Silence.
Then Emily whispered:
“Claire was pregnant when she disappeared.”
Michael's face went blank.
“You told me she wasn't.”
“I lied.”
“Why?”
“Because that's what she asked me to do.”
Michael stared at her in disbelief.
“Claire spoke to you?”
“Once.”
“When?”
“Seven months after the accident.”
Michael's heart hammered.
“Where?”
“A motel outside Hartford.”
“What did she say?”
Emily swallowed.
“She told me not to contact you.”
“Why?”
“Because she believed your house was compromised.”
Michael shook his head.
“My security team?”
“Your security team. Your lawyers. Your doctors.”
She paused.
“Even your family.”
Michael remembered Elizabeth's warning.
Don't trust your father.
“Why did Claire trust you?”
Emily hesitated.
“Because of my father.”
Michael's expression changed.
“Your father knew Claire.”
“He helped her.”
“How?”
“He helped her disappear.”
Michael stared.
“Then why did she come back?”
“She didn't.”
Emily reached into her bag.
“She sent me.”
She pulled out a small cassette recorder.
Michael recognized the object.
It was old.
Scratched.
The label read:
C — 214
Emily pressed PLAY.
Static filled the room.
Then—
Claire's voice.
Soft.
Weak.
But unmistakable.
“Emily, if Michael ever finds out about Noah, tell him the truth.”
Michael closed his eyes.
Claire continued.
“Noah wasn't created by accident.”
Michael opened his eyes.
Emily looked at him.
The recording continued.
“He was protected before he was born.”
A pause.
“And that protection came at a price.”
Michael whispered:
“What price?”
Claire's recorded voice answered.
“Someone had to disappear.”
The recording stopped.
Michael stared at Emily.
“What does that mean?”
“I don't know.”
“You're lying.”
“I swear.”
“Then why did Claire tell you about Noah?”
“Because she was afraid.”
“Afraid of what?”
Emily's voice cracked.
“Afraid someone would take him.”
Michael suddenly understood.
The mark.
The blanket.
The camera.
The missing security footage.
The hospital.
Someone had been preparing for Noah.
Not since the night he was born.
Long before.
Michael looked at the photograph from the hospital.
“Who took this?”
Emily turned pale.
“I don't know.”
Then her phone vibrated.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
She looked at the screen.
There was no number.
Only a message.
YOU SHOULD HAVE LEFT HIM ALONE.
A second message appeared.
CLAIRE WARNED YOU.
Then a third.
NOW ANNA PAYS FOR YOUR MISTAKE.
Emily dropped the phone.
Michael immediately picked it up.
“Anna.”
Her face drained of color.
“They have my daughter.”
Michael stared at her.
“We'll find her.”
Emily shook her head.
“You don't understand.”
“What?”
“They never threatened Anna before.”
She looked toward the dark window.
“This means they know where she is.”
Michael's jaw tightened.
“Who?”
Emily whispered:
“The person Claire was running from.”
A sound came from upstairs.
A door creaked.
Frank raised his gun.
Michael grabbed the old photograph.
“Stay here.”
He climbed the stairs.
One step.
Two.
Three.
The house was silent.
Then he saw it.
A trail of wet footprints across the wooden floor.
Someone had entered.
Michael followed them.
They stopped outside the bedroom.
The door was open.
Inside, there was a single object on the bed.
A blue baby blanket.
Michael walked closer.
His blood turned cold.
It was Noah's blanket.
The same blanket that had been in the hospital.
The same blanket carrying the number 214.
But now someone had stitched another word beneath it.
MORGAN.
Michael stared.
Morgan.
Claire's maiden name.
Then the bedroom television turned on by itself.
A live video appeared.
Claire.
She was sitting in a dim room.
Alive.
Her face was thinner.
Her hair streaked with gray.
But her eyes were the same.
Michael stepped toward the screen.
“Claire.”
Her lips trembled.
“Michael…”
He nearly collapsed.
“Where are you?”
“Don't come looking for me.”
“Where is Noah?”
Claire's expression changed.
“He's not with me.”
Michael froze.
“Then where is he?”
Claire looked directly into the camera.
“He was never the real target.”
Michael remembered Richard's words.
Noah is not the target. You are.
Claire whispered:
“They want you to believe the baby is the key.”
“What is the key?”
Claire's eyes filled with tears.
“You.”
The screen suddenly went black.
Then a final message appeared.
THE CARTER FOUNDATION — 9:00 A.M.
Michael stared at it.
Emily whispered behind him:
“What is the Carter Foundation?”
Michael slowly turned.
“My family's oldest charity.”
Emily shook her head.
“No.”
“What?”
“My father used to call it something else.”
Michael waited.
May you like
Emily whispered:
“The legal entrance to Project 214.”
