Chapter 5 — The Man Inside My Security Team

Michael stared at the photograph in his mother’s hand.
For several seconds, he couldn't breathe.
It was Noah.
His son.
Six months old.
The photograph showed Noah lying beneath the bright white lights of a hospital delivery room.
His tiny face was turned slightly toward the camera.
His eyes were closed.
A nurse stood beside the bed, her face blurred by motion.
But that wasn't what frightened Michael.
It was the timestamp.
2:17 A.M.
Twenty minutes before Noah had been born.
Michael slowly lifted his eyes.
“That’s impossible.”
Elizabeth Carter didn't blink.
“That is why you need to stop believing what they told you.”
Emily stood beside Michael, staring at the photograph.
“Who took it?”
Elizabeth's fingers tightened around the edge.
“Someone who had access to the operating room.”
Michael shook his head.
“No one outside the medical team knew we were there.”
“That’s what you think.”
His mother placed the photograph on the old wooden table.
Then she turned it over.
There was a number written on the back.
214.
Emily went completely still.
Michael noticed.
“You recognize it.”
Emily swallowed.
“My father used that number.”
“Why?”
“Because it wasn't just an address.”
She looked at Elizabeth.
“It was a designation.”
Elizabeth nodded.
“Project 214.”
Michael felt the room grow colder.
“My wife’s file.”
“Yes.”
“Why was Noah photographed before he was born?”
Elizabeth's eyes moved toward him.
“Because Noah wasn't the first child.”
Silence.
Michael's jaw tightened.
“What does that mean?”
“It means someone has been planning for your son long before you knew he existed.”
Emily stepped forward.
“How long?”
Elizabeth hesitated.
“Twenty-seven years.”
Michael stared at her.
“That makes no sense.”
“It will.”
She reached inside her coat and pulled out a small black envelope.
No name.
No seal.
Just one handwritten sentence:
THE FIRST CHILD FAILED.
Michael opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
A baby.
A newborn boy.
The photograph was old, yellowed at the edges.
On the back was another number.
214-A.
Michael looked at his mother.
“Who is this?”
Elizabeth's voice dropped.
“Your older brother.”
Michael stopped breathing.
“I don't have an older brother.”
“You were told you didn't.”
Emily looked from one face to another.
“What happened to him?”
Elizabeth looked away.
“He disappeared.”
“When?”
“Six months before you were born.”
Michael's fingers began to tremble.
“You're telling me my family had another child?”
“Yes.”
“And nobody told me?”
“Your father ordered everyone to forget him.”
“Why?”
Elizabeth's eyes filled with something Michael hadn't seen in years.
Fear.
“Because the boy survived something he wasn't supposed to survive.”
“What?”
Elizabeth whispered one word.
“Control.”
Michael didn't understand.
She continued.
“Richard wasn't building a financial empire.”
She pointed toward the photograph.
“He was building something much worse.”
Emily slowly stepped closer.
“An inheritance system.”
Elizabeth nodded.
“A system where children from powerful families could be monitored, manipulated, relocated, erased, or replaced.”
Michael looked down at the photograph of the baby.
“And Noah?”
“Is the first child born into your family who Richard believes can break that system.”
The basement suddenly went silent.
Then—
A metallic click came from upstairs.
Everyone froze.
Frank immediately reached for his weapon.
Michael whispered:
“How many people know we're here?”
Elizabeth answered without hesitation.
“Too many.”
Another sound.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Measured.
Coming down the stairs.
Frank raised his gun.
Emily moved behind Michael.
Elizabeth didn't move.
She simply stared toward the staircase.
Then a man's voice echoed through the darkness.
“Mr. Carter.”
Michael recognized it instantly.
His security chief.
David Mercer.
The man who had worked for him for eleven years.
The man who had protected his family.
The man who had personally supervised the hospital security team the night Noah disappeared.
Michael's stomach dropped.
David stepped into view.
His suit was immaculate.
His expression calm.
Two armed men stood behind him.
Frank raised his weapon.
David smiled.
“Don't.”
Frank's finger tightened around the trigger.
David slowly lifted a phone.
On the screen was Noah.
Alive.
Sleeping.
Wrapped in a blue blanket.
Michael nearly collapsed.
“My son.”
David nodded.
“He's safe.”
“Where is he?”
“That depends.”
Michael's voice became cold.
“Depends on what?”
David looked directly at him.
“Whether you want to see him again.”
Emily stepped forward.
“You're working for Richard.”
David smiled faintly.
“No.”
Michael stared at him.
“Then who?”
David's expression changed.
“For the first time tonight, Mr. Carter, you're asking the right question.”
He turned toward Elizabeth.
“And your mother knows the answer.”
Elizabeth's face went pale.
David said:
“Tell him.”
Elizabeth whispered:
“It's William.”
Michael's heart stopped.
His father.
The man believed dead for nine years.
David looked at Michael.
“Your father is alive.”
Michael shook his head.
“No.”
“He has been alive this entire time.”
“Where?”
David smiled.
“Closer than you think.”
The lights went out.
A gunshot exploded in the darkness.
And when the emergency lights flickered back on—
Elizabeth was gone.
So was David.
But on the floor beneath the table lay one final photograph.
Michael picked it up.
His hands shook.
It showed his father standing beside a newborn baby.
May you like
On the back were four words:
YOU WERE NEVER THE FIRST.
