Chapter 11 — The Trap Beneath the Mansion

Michael stared at his mother.

Elizabeth Carter stood only a few feet away.

Alive.

Older.

Exhausted.

Holding a folder that looked like it had been carried through hell.

Michael's first instinct was to run toward her.

His second was to raise his gun.

He chose the second.

“You have ten seconds.”

Elizabeth didn't flinch.

“You have every right to hate me.”

“I don't hate you.”

Michael's voice shook.

“I don't know you anymore.”

Elizabeth lowered her eyes.

“That may be worse.”

Behind Michael, Frank and David watched in silence.

Emily held Noah tightly.

The baby was asleep.

Completely unaware that his existence had torn apart an empire.

Michael pointed toward the folder.

“What happened the night I was born?”

Elizabeth opened it.

The first page contained a photograph.

A hospital.

A newborn.

His mother lying unconscious.

And William standing beside the bed.

Michael recognized the baby immediately.

It was him.

But something was wrong.

There were two wristbands.

One read:

MICHAEL CARTER.

The other read:

214-A.

Michael stared.

“Why did I have two identities?”

Elizabeth swallowed.

“Because you weren't supposed to survive.”

Michael's face hardened.

“What?”

Richard had always believed that the Carter family needed a replacement heir.

Your father disagreed.

So Richard created a plan.

He would raise two boys.

One would become the public heir.

The other would remain hidden.

If the first one died, the second would replace him.

Michael stared at the photograph.

“Who was the other boy?”

Elizabeth looked at him.

“Your brother.”

“Where is he?”

“I don't know.”

“You've said that before.”

“This time I'm telling you the truth.”

Michael's voice became colder.

“You knew about him.”

“Yes.”

“You watched him disappear.”

Elizabeth closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you stop it?”

Her voice broke.

“Because I was afraid.”

Michael laughed bitterly.

“You were my mother.”

“I know.”

“You were supposed to protect us.”

“I tried.”

“No.”

Michael stepped closer.

“You protected the system.”

Elizabeth looked at him.

“For years, yes.”

Silence.

Then she said:

“Until Claire showed me what Richard had done.”

Michael froze.

“What did Claire discover?”

“That Noah wasn't the first child Richard tried to claim.”

Elizabeth opened another file.

Inside were photographs.

Dozens of babies.

Different families.

Different hospitals.

Different years.

But the same symbol.

214.

“These children were selected because their parents had money, influence, or access.”

Elizabeth continued.

“Richard believed powerful families were predictable.”

Michael looked at the photographs.

“So he created leverage.”

“He created replacements.”

Michael looked at Noah.

“And Claire discovered it.”

“Yes.”

“What did she do?”

“She tried to destroy everything.”

Elizabeth turned another page.

A photograph of Claire.

Pregnant.

Standing beside William.

“She and your father began working together.”

Michael's eyes narrowed.

“Then why did my father betray her?”

“He didn't.”

Michael stared.

Elizabeth's voice became barely audible.

“Richard made it look like he did.”

Michael felt a chill.

“The accident…”

“Wasn't an accident.”

The words hung in the air.

Elizabeth continued.

“Claire was taken from the road alive.”

Michael's heart stopped.

“Who took her?”

“Richard's people.”

“And the woman they buried?”

“A woman from Project 214.”

Michael looked away.

Three years of grief.

Three years of believing he had buried his wife.

All of it had been a lie.

“Where was Claire taken?”

Elizabeth hesitated.

“The mansion.”

Michael looked at her.

“My mansion?”

“Yes.”

Michael's expression changed.

“What?”

“Richard built a facility underneath your home.”

Emily stepped forward.

“That's impossible.”

Elizabeth shook her head.

“No.”

She pointed toward Michael.

“Your father didn't give you that mansion as a gift.”

Michael remembered.

The house had been purchased through a Carter family trust.

He had never questioned it.

Elizabeth continued.

“It was built over the original Project 214 command center.”

Michael's face went pale.

“Why would my father put me there?”

“To keep you close.”

“Close to what?”

Elizabeth looked at Noah.

“The truth.”

A distant alarm suddenly sounded.

David looked at his watch.

“Someone has entered the foundation.”

Frank raised his gun.

“How many?”

David checked the security feed.

“Twenty.”

Michael looked at Elizabeth.

“Richard?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Elizabeth stared at the screen.

Her face changed.

“Your father's people.”

Michael frowned.

“My father?”

“No.”

She whispered:

“Your grandfather.”

Michael froze.

“My grandfather is dead.”

Elizabeth looked at him.

“That's what Richard wants you to believe.”

The basement doors began opening one after another.

Armed men flooded the corridor.

David fired.

Frank fired beside him.

Michael pulled Emily behind a concrete wall.

Bullets tore through the control room.

William appeared at the far entrance.

“Michael!”

Michael looked toward him.

“Dad!”

William shouted:

“Get Noah out!”

Michael ran.

They reached the emergency tunnel.

But the tunnel doors suddenly locked.

A red light flashed.

FACILITY SEALED.

Emily looked at Michael.

“We're trapped.”

Michael looked at Noah.

Then at the sealed door.

Then he remembered the mansion.

The hidden rooms.

The foundation.

The photographs.

The trap beneath his own home.

Everything connected.

He looked at William.

“Dad.”

William nodded.

“There is one way out.”

“Where?”

William pointed upward.

“Your house.”

Michael stared.

“My mansion?”

“Under the nursery.”

Michael's blood went cold.

The room where Noah had collapsed.

The room where the cameras had been disabled.

The room where the entire nightmare had begun.

William whispered:

“That nursery was built over the first Project 214 chamber.”

Michael suddenly understood.

The attack wasn't happening at the foundation.

It was happening everywhere.

Because the enemy had never been outside.

They had been inside his home all along.

Michael turned to Emily.

“Take Noah.”

They ran.

Behind them, the facility exploded into chaos.

And somewhere far away—

a phone rang.

Richard answered.

A man's voice said:

“They're heading back to the mansion.”

Richard smiled.

“Good.”

The man asked:

“Should we stop them?”

Richard looked at a photograph of Michael as a newborn.

“No.”

May you like

He slowly smiled.

“Let them open the nursery.”
