Chapter 13 — The Last Person They Expected to Betray Them

Noah's cry echoed through the nursery.
Michael spun toward the door.
Locked.
The red emergency lights flashed across the walls.
Then the voice came again.
“Hello, Michael.”
Michael recognized it.
Daniel Hayes.
His chief financial officer.
His oldest business partner.
The man who had been sitting beside him during every major acquisition for the last decade.
The man who knew exactly how much money Michael had.
Exactly where it was.
Exactly which companies he controlled.
Michael stared at the hidden speaker.
“Daniel.”
A soft laugh answered him.
“You finally learned my name.”
Claire stepped beside Michael.
“That's not his real name.”
The room fell silent.
Michael turned toward her.
“What?”
Claire looked at the speaker.
“Daniel Hayes is an identity.”
She paused.
“Matthew Carter is the man behind it.”
Michael's breathing stopped.
The voice returned.
“You always were the impatient one, little brother.”
Michael froze.
Little brother.
The words hit harder than any bullet.
Matthew continued.
“Twenty-seven years.”
Michael stared at the wall.
“Show yourself.”
“Not yet.”
“Coward.”
A laugh.
“You have no idea how many times I wanted to stand in front of you.”
Michael's fists clenched.
“Then why didn't you?”
“Because every time I tried, Richard moved the pieces.”
Michael looked at Claire.
“Was he working for Richard?”
Claire shook her head.
“No.”
Matthew answered for her.
“I was working against him.”
Michael frowned.
“Then why destroy my company?”
“I didn't.”
The screens around the nursery turned on.
Financial documents appeared.
Bank transfers.
Shell companies.
Offshore accounts.
Thousands of transactions.
Michael stared.
“These aren't mine.”
“No.”
Matthew's voice became colder.
“They were planted inside your company.”
Michael looked at Claire.
“By whom?”
“Richard.”
Michael shook his head.
“Richard couldn't have moved billions without me knowing.”
Matthew laughed.
“He didn't need to.”
A document appeared.
CARTER FOUNDATION — CONTROLLED ASSET STRUCTURE.
Then another.
CARTER HOLDINGS — SECONDARY OWNERSHIP TRUST.
Then another.
BENEFICIARY: MATTHEW CARTER.
Michael stared.
“Why is your name on my company?”
“Because your father put it there.”
William stepped forward.
“I had no choice.”
Michael turned.
“You knew?”
William nodded.
“I knew Matthew survived.”
Michael's expression hardened.
“And you never told me.”
“I couldn't.”
“Why?”
“Because Richard was watching you.”
Matthew interrupted.
“He was watching both of us.”
A screen changed.
Security footage appeared.
A young boy being carried through a hospital corridor.
Michael stared.
The boy was Matthew.
He was about six months old.
A man carried him.
The face was blurred.
But the man wore a Carter Security uniform.
Michael looked at Frank.
Frank shook his head.
“That wasn't me.”
Matthew spoke again.
“Your father tried to save me.”
The video changed.
William appeared.
Young.
Terrified.
He handed the baby to a woman.
Elizabeth.
She was crying.
Then Richard entered.
He took the baby.
Michael's mother screamed.
The video ended.
Michael whispered:
“My mother tried to save him.”
Claire nodded.
“She did.”
Michael looked at Elizabeth.
She stood near the doorway.
Tears ran down her face.
“I failed both of you.”
Michael stared at her.
“No.”
Elizabeth looked at him.
“I failed you first.”
She stepped closer.
“When Richard took Matthew, I believed I could bargain with him.”
“What did you give him?”
“My silence.”
Michael's expression hardened.
“And what did he give you?”
“Your life.”
Silence.
Elizabeth continued.
“He promised that if I never spoke about Matthew, he would leave you alone.”
Michael looked down.
“That was the deal.”
“And you believed him?”
“I was your mother.”
Her voice broke.
“I was terrified.”
Michael couldn't answer.
Then the mansion shook.
A deep explosion came from beneath the floor.
Emily grabbed Noah.
“What was that?”
Matthew's voice returned.
“Richard has activated the foundation.”
Claire looked at William.
“He found us.”
William nodded.
“We have minutes.”
Michael looked at the screens.
“Where is he?”
Matthew answered:
“Inside your company.”
Michael frowned.
“What?”
“He's not at the mansion.”
Another explosion.
“He's at Carter Tower.”
Michael's face changed.
“My headquarters.”
“Yes.”
Matthew continued.
“Every server. Every financial account. Every legal document. He's destroying everything.”
Michael grabbed his jacket.
“Then we go there.”
Claire stepped in front of him.
“No.”
Michael stared at her.
“I'm ending this.”
“You can't fight Richard the way he expects.”
“How?”
“He wants you angry.”
Michael looked at her.
“Why?”
“Because anger makes you predictable.”
She held out a small key.
“Use this.”
Michael looked at it.
“What is it?”
“The original ownership key.”
William's eyes widened.
“Claire…”
She looked at him.
“It's time.”
Michael took the key.
“What does it open?”
Claire answered:
“Everything.”
The mansion lights suddenly went black.
Then every screen displayed one sentence:
CARTER HOLDINGS — TRANSFER INITIATED.
Michael's phone vibrated.
A message from his bank.
ALL ACCOUNTS FROZEN.
Another.
BOARD MEMBERS REMOVED.
Another.
EMERGENCY CONTROL TRANSFERRED.
Michael looked at Claire.
“It's happening.”
She nodded.
“Richard has taken your empire.”
Michael closed his hand around the key.
“No.”
He looked toward the exit.
“He's only taken what he can see.”
Claire smiled faintly.
“Now you're thinking like your father.”
They ran.
Carter Tower stood against the Boston skyline like a monument to power.
By the time Michael arrived, police vehicles surrounded the building.
News helicopters circled overhead.
Employees were being evacuated.
The company's digital billboards had gone black.
On the largest screen appeared a single message:
CARTER HOLDINGS IS NO LONGER CONTROLLED BY MICHAEL CARTER.
Michael stepped out of the vehicle.
Reporters rushed toward him.
“Mr. Carter!”
“Are you being removed as CEO?”
“Is it true your accounts were frozen?”
“Who controls the company?”
Michael ignored them.
He looked up at the tower.
At the top floor, one light was still on.
Claire stood beside him.
“That is where he is.”
Michael nodded.
“Then that's where this ends.”
They entered through the service entrance.
Frank stayed behind to protect Emily and Noah.
David went with Michael.
William followed.
Claire walked beside him.
Inside the elevator, nobody spoke.
The doors opened on the sixty-third floor.
The entire executive floor was empty.
Except for one man.
Daniel Hayes stood beside the window.
He turned.
For the first time, Michael saw his real face.
The resemblance was undeniable.
Same eyes.
Same jaw.
Same scar beneath the left eyebrow.
Michael stared at his brother.
Matthew looked back.
Neither moved.
Then Matthew whispered:
“You got Father's eyes.”
Michael swallowed.
“And you got his secrets.”
Matthew smiled sadly.
“I got his punishment.”
Before Michael could respond—
the doors behind them locked.
A voice filled the room.
Richard.
“You found each other.”
Michael turned toward the speakers.
“Come out.”
Richard laughed.
“You still think I'm hiding.”
The lights changed.
A screen descended from the ceiling.
Richard appeared.
But he wasn't alone.
Standing beside him was a woman.
Michael's heart stopped.
Elizabeth.
Another Elizabeth.
The same face.
The same gray hair.
The same eyes.
Michael stared in confusion.
Claire whispered:
“That's not your mother.”
Richard smiled.
“Now you understand.”
Michael looked at the woman.
Then at the real Elizabeth beside him.
Richard spoke.
“Project 214 didn't just create replacement children.”
He smiled.
“It created replacement people.”
The woman beside him looked at Michael.
Then slowly removed a mask.
She had Elizabeth's face.
But underneath—
was someone else.
Richard laughed.
“You trusted your mother.”
Michael stared.
“You replaced her.”
Richard nodded.
“And for twelve years, the world believed the replacement was Elizabeth Carter.”
The real Elizabeth stepped forward.
“You monster.”
Richard smiled.
“Too late.”
A countdown appeared.
00:10:00
Michael looked at Matthew.
“What happens at zero?”
Matthew answered:
“The Carter empire disappears.”
Richard corrected him.
“No.”
He smiled.
“Michael disappears.”
May you like
The timer began counting down.
And every screen in Carter Tower went black.
