Chapter 5 - The Passport in the Safe

My mother’s passport had been reported destroyed after her death.

Yet Vanessa placed it in my hands at 11:17 that night.

The last recorded entry stamp was dated six weeks before my mother died.

Switzerland.

Geneva.

She had told me she was in Boston.

Vanessa sat opposite me in a closed café Daniel arranged through a friend.

Without the white gown and diamonds, she looked younger.

Frightened.

“I didn’t know who you were yesterday.”

“You knew enough to throw me across a floor.”

She looked ashamed.

“My mother told me you were a scammer.”

“So you assault strangers when your mother tells you to?”

“No.”

She paused.

“Apparently I do terrible things when I’m desperate to impress her.”

I didn’t forgive her.

But I listened.

Helena had spent years controlling Vanessa.

Career.

Friends.

Relationships.

Even her engagement to Malcolm Pierce’s son had been arranged to consolidate influence between two Solmere families.

“What was my mother doing in Geneva?”

Vanessa slid another document across the table.

A bank deposit slip.

Zurich International Trust.

Account holder: Eleanor Vale.

Amount: one dollar.

“A one-dollar account?”

Daniel leaned closer.

“It isn’t about the money.”

He was right.

A nominal deposit can establish a legal trust relationship.

My mother had created something.

We contacted a Swiss attorney named Jakob Meier whose name appeared on the slip.

He refused to discuss details electronically.

But he said one thing.

“Miss Vale, your mother expected you.”

“Expected me when?”

“After her death.”

My skin went cold.

“What did she leave?”

“Not over the telephone.”

“Mr. Meier—”

“One sentence.”

He lowered his voice.

“Your mother knew someone would alter the American trust.”

The call ended.

Marcus arranged for a secure courier.

Twenty-four hours later, a sealed packet arrived.

Inside was a codicil.

The Sovereign Clause.

If fraud, coercion, unlawful proxy transfer, or deliberate concealment of the rightful heir occurred, every controlling share held through Vale trusts automatically reverted to the direct heir.

No board approval.

No executive override.

No sale authority.

Nothing.

If we proved the erasure campaign, I didn’t merely regain a vote.

I gained absolute control.

That explained everything.

Why they had to erase me before the sale.

Why my mother hid the clause overseas.

Why she created multiple layers of evidence.

Then Daniel turned over the codicil.

A handwritten note appeared on the back.

Charlotte,

If you receive this, I am dead.

Do not let them convince you my death was natural.

I stopped breathing.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Marcus went pale.

Daniel read the line again.

My mother had known.

Not suspected.

Known.

Her death was coming.

And someone inside Solmere had helped arrange it.
