Chapter 16 - Beneath the Marble

We entered through a maintenance passage.
Behind the foundation stone was a steel room.
My grandmother had built it before digital records existed.
Inside were original trust documents.
Property deeds.
Board charters.
And one sealed file labeled CHARLOTTE.
My hands trembled as I opened it.
The first document solved everything.
The Sovereign Clause did not merely activate after fraud was proven.
A second paragraph stated that any attempt to erase the heir’s legal identity automatically suspended all board authority upon documentary evidence.
We already had that evidence.
The court freeze could not override a trust action that had legally occurred months earlier.
Helena’s sale vote had been void.
So were the debt accelerations triggered by the false change in control.
We had not defaulted.
Helena had.
The second document was my mother’s final affidavit.
Signed.
Notarized.
Witnessed.
It detailed the debt fraud, Thomas’s disappearance, Helena’s threats, and the altered medication.
My mother had created her own testimony before she died.
And the final page named the person she wanted to succeed her.
Me.
Not because I was her daughter.
Because, she wrote, “Charlotte is the only one among us who has not yet learned to excuse cowardice as necessity.”
I cried when I read it.

Then I stood.
It was time to stop surviving.
