Chapter 15 - The Night Solmere Fell

At midnight, lenders issued default notices.
At two, three international properties were placed into receivership.
At four, news channels reported that Solmere Holdings was collapsing.
Employees cried in break rooms.
Guests canceled reservations.
Stock-linked bonds crashed.
Helena appeared on television.
She described herself as the responsible executive trying to save thousands of jobs from an unstable heiress.
The public believed enough of it to hurt.
By sunrise, I sat alone in the lobby.
The same marble floor.
The same chandeliers.
No crowd now.
Only cleaners.
One of them approached me.
An older woman named Teresa.
She had worked at Solmere for thirty-one years.
“Your grandmother hired me,” she said.
“I know.”
“She used to say the hotel was never the building.”
I looked at her.
“It was the people.”
Teresa nodded.
Then she handed me a tiny brass key.
“Your mother left this with housekeeping.”
I recognized it.
A service key from the original hotel.
“She said to give it to you if the lights ever went dark.”
“Why?”
Teresa pointed toward the foundation wall.
“Because the first Solmere had two archives.”
May you like
Room 1919 had been the decoy.
The real archive was beneath the lobby.
