Chapter 19 - The Last Signature

I did not need Helena’s signature.
That was what she had missed.
My grandmother had never trusted executives with permanent control of the Solmere name.
The trademark was not owned by Solmere Holdings.
It belonged to the Vale Heritage Trust.
A separate entity.
The hidden archive contained the original registration.
Helena’s transaction attempted to sell an asset she never owned.
Daniel sent the documents to every jurisdiction where the transfer had been filed.
At 11:41 p.m., Singapore rejected it.
11:46, London.
11:51, Switzerland.
11:56, New York.
Four minutes remained.
Meridian Crown filed an emergency challenge.
At 11:59, the federal judge issued the order.
TRANSFER VOID.
The Solmere name remained ours.
Helena stared at the order through the glass.
For the first time, she looked small.
“What happens now?” she asked.
“Now?”
I stood.
“You live long enough to watch us rebuild everything you tried to destroy.”
She was later charged with conspiracy, financial fraud, obstruction, forgery, and offenses related to my parents.
Malcolm went with her.
Gideon pleaded guilty to his part in the cover-up.
Marcus cooperated fully.
Owen entered a deferred agreement in exchange for testimony.
Lucas resigned from the board.
He told me he wanted to earn my trust before he ever asked for it again.
That was the first thing he had said in months that made me believe he might someday deserve it.
But one person still had a question for me.
Vanessa.
We stood together in the lobby after midnight.
The marble had been cleaned.
No trace remained of the night she dragged me across it.
“I don’t expect forgiveness,” she said.
“Good.”
She almost smiled.
“What are you going to do with this place?”
I looked around.
May you like
For the first time, I knew.
“Change what it means to belong here.”
