CHAPTER 9-THE BETRAYAL NOBODY SAW COMING

For several seconds…

Khloe could not understand the words in front of her.

Not because they were complicated.

Because they were impossible.

The file was real.

The signature was real.

The date was real.

Everything about it existed.

Except the person who supposedly signed it.

Her mother.

Claire Thorne.

A woman who had been dead for twenty years.

Khloe stared at the document.

Her fingers trembled slightly.

“No.”

The word came out quietly.

Then stronger.

“No.”

Marcus watched her.

He wanted to say something.

Anything.

But every explanation sounded meaningless.

Because the woman he loved had just discovered that her entire life might have been connected to his family before they ever met.

Khloe looked at Alexander.

“You’re wrong.”

Alexander didn’t react.

“I wish I was.”

“My mother was Claire Bennett.”

“Yes.”

“She wasn’t a Thorne.”

Alexander slowly looked at Marcus.

“She was.”

Khloe turned.

Marcus looked away.

That was when she knew.

There was something else.

Something he knew.

Something everyone knew except her.

“Marcus.”

He looked at her.

“Tell me.”

His expression changed.

Because this time…

He knew there was no place left to hide.

“Your mother…”

He stopped.

Khloe waited.

“Your mother was Richard Thorne’s younger sister.”

The room became silent.

The information didn’t make sense.

It felt like someone had rewritten her entire history while she was standing there.

“My mother was your aunt?”

Marcus nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

Khloe stepped backward.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“That’s impossible.”

“I know.”

“Then why didn’t you tell me?”

Marcus had no answer.

Because the truth was humiliating.

He had known pieces.

Not everything.

But enough.

Enough to ask questions.

Enough to investigate.

Enough to tell her.

And he didn’t.

“I found out after we started dating.”

Khloe stared.

The pain in her eyes was immediate.

“You found out?”

“Yes.”

“And you said nothing?”

Marcus swallowed.

“I was trying to understand it.”

“No.”

Her voice became sharper.

“You were trying to decide if I was a threat.”

Marcus looked hurt.

“That’s not true.”

“Isn’t it?”

Khloe pointed at the contract.

“My name was in your father’s files.”

“My dead mother signed a secret agreement with your family.”

“And you still chose to investigate me instead of trusting me.”

Marcus looked down.

Because she was right.

The truth was uncomfortable.

But it was true.

For years, Marcus had believed secrets protected people.

Now he was watching secrets destroy the person he loved most.

Isabella watched quietly.

For the first time, she looked at Khloe with something close to sympathy.

“Now you understand.”

Khloe looked at her.

“Understand what?”

“Why I was afraid of you.”

Khloe frowned.

“You were afraid of me?”

“Yes.”

Isabella walked closer.

“Because you were the one person nobody could explain.”

“What does that mean?”

“Everyone in this story has a reason.”

“Richard wanted power.”

“Marcus wanted to protect his family.”

“I wanted to expose the truth.”

She looked at Khloe.

“But you…”

“You appeared out of nowhere.”

“A woman with no connection to the Thorne empire.”

“A woman who somehow became the center of Sofia’s protection plan.”

Khloe stared.

“So you thought I was part of it.”

Isabella nodded.

“Yes.”

“And you attacked me because you were afraid?”

Isabella looked ashamed.

“Yes.”

The admission surprised everyone.

Especially Marcus.

Because Isabella Rossi had spent months pretending she was fearless.

But now she was admitting the truth.

She had been scared.

Not of Khloe.

Of what Khloe represented.

Marcus looked at Isabella.

“You still hurt her.”

Isabella lowered her eyes.

“I know.”

“And there is no excuse.”

“No.”

Her voice was quiet.

“There isn’t.”

A long silence followed.

Then Khloe looked back at the contract.

“Tell me about my mother.”

Nobody answered immediately.

Because nobody wanted to be the person who opened that door.

Finally, Alexander spoke.

“Claire Thorne was different from Richard.”

“How?”

“She believed the empire should help people.”

“Richard believed the empire existed to control people.”

Khloe listened.

“Your mother discovered what Richard was doing.”

“The hidden accounts.”

“The illegal agreements.”

“The people he controlled.”

“She tried to stop him.”

Khloe looked at Marcus.

“And Sofia?”

Alexander nodded.

“Your mother was the reason Sofia found the evidence.”

Marcus closed his eyes.

Everything connected.

The hidden contract.

The missing files.

The warning.

Sofia.

Khloe.

His family.

All connected.

But one question remained.

“If my mother knew all of this…”

Khloe whispered.

“Why did she leave me?”

The room became quiet.

Because nobody knew how to answer that.

Then Isabella spoke.

“She didn’t.”

Everyone looked at her.

“What?”

Isabella reached into her bag.

Slowly.

Carefully.

She pulled out an old envelope.

Marcus immediately recognized it.

His face changed.

“Where did you get that?”

Isabella looked at him.

“Sofia gave it to me.”

Khloe stared.

“What is it?”

Isabella handed it to her.

“A letter from your mother.”

Khloe’s hands froze.

She looked at Marcus.

Then at Isabella.

“Why do you have this?”

“Because Sofia trusted me with it.”

Khloe opened the envelope.

Inside was an old handwritten letter.

The paper was yellowed.

The ink slightly faded.

But the first line was clear.

My dear Khloe,

Her breath stopped.

Because nobody had called her that in her mother’s handwriting for twenty years.

She began reading.

My daughter,

If you are reading this, then the people I feared have finally found you.

I am sorry.

I am sorry that I could not tell you the truth.

I am sorry that I had to leave you with unanswered questions.

But I made a choice.

I chose your life over my own.

Khloe’s eyes filled with tears.

She continued.

The Thorne family carries a darkness that began long before you were born.

Your uncle Richard will tell you that everything he did was necessary.

He will tell you he protected the family.

He will tell you he protected Marcus.

Do not believe him.

Richard does not protect people.

He protects power.

Khloe looked up.

Everyone was silent.

She continued reading.

Marcus is not his father.

But he carries his father's greatest weakness.

He believes love means carrying pain alone.

If you ever meet him…

Teach him that love requires truth.

Marcus looked away.

Because those words were not written for Khloe.

They were written for him.

Then the final part of the letter appeared.

And it changed everything.

Khloe,

There is something you must know.

The reason the Thorne family will come after you is not because of my secrets.

It is not because of Sofia's evidence.

It is because of something I hid from Richard.

Something that can destroy everything he built.

Khloe stopped.

Her hands shook.

The next sentence was underlined.

You were never just protected by the Thorne family.

You were protecting them from the truth.

Nobody spoke.

Marcus looked at her.

“What does that mean?”

Khloe didn’t answer.

Because she didn’t know.

Then another piece of paper slipped out of the envelope.

A photograph.

An old photograph.

A picture of three people.

Claire Thorne.

Richard Thorne.

And a little girl.

A little girl who looked exactly like Khloe.

On the back of the photo were four words.

THE REAL HEIR.

Everyone stared.

Marcus slowly looked at Khloe.

Because suddenly the biggest question was no longer who betrayed Sofia.

It was something much more dangerous.

May you like

Who was Khloe Thorne really?

And why had Richard spent twenty years trying to erase her existence?
