CHAPTER 4-THE LIE THAT PROTECTED A BILLIONAIRE

For four years…

Marcus Thorne had lived with one certainty.

His father was dead.

Richard Thorne had died in a private plane crash over the Atlantic.

At least…

That was the story everyone believed.

The world had mourned him.

The business magazines had called him a visionary.

The financial networks had replayed his greatest achievements.

The man who built Thorne Global Holdings from a small investment firm into a worldwide empire was remembered as a legend.

A ruthless one.

A complicated one.

But a legend.

Marcus had stood at his father’s funeral.

He had watched the coffin being lowered into the ground.

He had listened to thousands of people speak about Richard Thorne’s genius.

And secretly…

He had felt something he was ashamed to admit.

Relief.

Because Richard Thorne’s death meant the end of fear.

The end of control.

The end of the man who had spent Marcus’s entire life teaching him that love was a weakness and trust was a mistake.

But now…

Standing in the hospital doorway…

Richard Thorne was alive.

Not a memory.

Not a ghost.

Not a photograph.

A living man.

Older.

Thinner.

With gray hair replacing the dark hair Marcus remembered.

But the eyes were exactly the same.

Cold.

Calculating.

Unforgiving.

The same eyes that had watched Marcus as a child and asked why he cried after falling.

The same eyes that had told him:

“Pain is a lesson.”

The same eyes that had convinced him Sofia Bellini was a traitor.

The same eyes that had destroyed everything.

Nobody moved.

Even Isabella looked shocked.

That was the first thing Marcus noticed.

And it terrified him.

Because if Isabella Rossi was surprised…

Then this was not her plan.

Richard slowly entered the room.

His expensive black coat moved quietly behind him.

The sound of his shoes against the marble floor was the only noise.

Then he looked at Marcus.

Not Khloe.

Not Isabella.

Marcus.

“My son.”

The words were calm.

Almost warm.

But Marcus knew better.

Richard Thorne never spoke without a reason.

Marcus stepped in front of Khloe.

A protective instinct.

Something Richard hated.

“Stay away from my family.”

Richard looked at him.

A small smile appeared.

“Your family?”

His eyes moved toward Khloe.

Then toward her stomach.

“You mean the family you built without knowing the truth?”

Khloe felt Marcus tense.

She noticed.

Every small movement.

Every reaction.

This man still had power over him.

Even after death.

Even after four years.

“What are you doing here?”

Marcus asked.

Richard ignored the question.

Instead, he looked around the room.

“Interesting.”

“The great Marcus Thorne.”

“The man who convinced the world he escaped my shadow.”

He smiled.

“And yet here you are.”

“Still protecting secrets.”

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

“You’re the one who disappeared.”

“Yes.”

Richard answered easily.

“I needed to.”

Khloe stared.

“You faked your own death?”

Richard looked at her.

For the first time, he seemed interested.

“So this is Khloe.”

Marcus said nothing.

Richard smiled.

“The woman who changed my son.”

Khloe’s expression hardened.

“You mean the woman who made him stop obeying you?”

Richard’s smile faded slightly.

That tiny reaction told Khloe everything.

She had found the weakness.

Richard Thorne could control Marcus.

But he did not know how to control her.

“I can see why he chose you.”

Richard said.

“You are stubborn.”

Khloe looked directly at him.

“No.”

She glanced at Marcus.

“I just don’t like being lied to.”

The words landed.

Because everyone in the room knew they were true.

Richard looked at Marcus.

“You told her nothing?”

Marcus remained silent.

“After everything I taught you…”

Richard shook his head.

“You still let emotions control your decisions.”

Marcus finally stepped forward.

“You don’t get to talk about emotions.”

“You destroyed people.”

“You destroyed Sofia.”

The room changed.

Richard’s expression remained calm.

But his eyes became darker.

“Sofia.”

He said the name like it was an inconvenience.

Not a person.

Not someone’s daughter.

Not someone’s family.

An inconvenience.

Khloe noticed.

And she hated him instantly.

“What happened to her?”

She asked.

Richard looked at her.

“You are asking questions about a woman you never knew.”

“I am asking about a woman your son believed he failed.”

For a moment…

Richard said nothing.

Then he laughed.

Quietly.

“You really did change him.”

Marcus looked at him.

“Where is Sofia?”

Richard walked toward the security monitor.

The deleted footage screen remained frozen.

“You all think Sofia was innocent.”

Nobody answered.

“Because that is the easiest story.”

He touched the screen.

“Sofia was intelligent.”

“She was ambitious.”

“She understood numbers better than anyone.”

“But she made one mistake.”

“What mistake?”

Khloe asked.

Richard looked at her.

“She trusted the wrong people.”

Isabella suddenly stepped forward.

“Stop.”

Everyone turned.

Richard looked at her.

For the first time…

His expression changed.

Recognition.

Not surprise.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

“Isabella Rossi.”

His voice was quiet.

“So you survived too.”

Marcus looked between them.

“What does that mean?”

Isabella’s face became pale.

“You knew.”

Richard smiled.

“I knew everything.”

The room went silent.

Marcus stared.

“You knew Isabella was connected to Sofia?”

“Yes.”

“And you said nothing?”

Richard looked at him.

“Because you were not ready.”

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“Not ready?”

“You destroyed my life.”

Richard shrugged.

“I protected you.”

Khloe looked at him.

“Protected him?”

“Yes.”

Richard turned.

“The truth would have destroyed Marcus.”

“No.”

Khloe’s voice was firm.

“The truth would have freed him.”

Richard studied her.

Then smiled.

“That is why you are dangerous.”

Khloe frowned.

“What?”

“You still believe truth fixes things.”

He looked at Marcus.

“But powerful families survive because they know which truths should remain buried.”

Marcus’s hands tightened.

“Enough.”

For the first time in years…

Marcus raised his voice at his father.

Enough.

Richard looked surprised.

Only slightly.

But it was there.

Because Marcus had spent his entire life afraid of disappointing him.

And now…

He was standing against him.

“Tell me about Sofia.”

Marcus said.

“Tell me what really happened.”

Richard looked at him.

Then at Khloe.

Then at Isabella.

Finally, he sighed.

“Fine.”

He sat down.

“Six years ago, Sofia discovered the hidden accounts.”

Marcus nodded.

“I know.”

“No.”

Richard corrected him.

“You know only the beginning.”

Everyone listened.

“Sofia did not discover the accounts by accident.”

Marcus frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“She was looking for them.”

A silence.

“Why?”

Richard smiled.

“Because someone hired her.”

Marcus froze.

“Who?”

Richard looked directly at Isabella.

Nobody expected the answer.

“She was working for the Rossi family.”

Isabella’s expression changed.

“That’s a lie.”

Richard ignored her.

“The Rossi family wanted information about Thorne Global Holdings.”

“They wanted control.”

“They wanted access.”

“And Sofia was their way inside.”

Marcus looked at Isabella.

“Your family used Sofia?”

Isabella shook her head.

“No.”

Her voice became emotional.

“You’re lying.”

Richard leaned back.

“Am I?”

He looked at Marcus.

“Ask yourself why Isabella appeared years later.”

“Why she suddenly became close to your company.”

“Why she knew about your marriage.”

“Why she knew about the child.”

Marcus looked at Isabella.

And for the first time…

Doubt appeared.

Khloe noticed.

And it hurt.

Because now there were too many lies.

Too many secrets.

Too many people manipulating the truth.

Isabella looked at Marcus.

“You believe him?”

Marcus didn’t answer.

That silence hurt her.

But before she could speak…

Richard’s phone rang.

Everyone looked at him.

He answered.

Listened.

Then smiled.

“What?”

Marcus demanded.

Richard ended the call.

“The problem is solved.”

“What problem?”

Richard looked at Khloe.

“The reason I came here.”

A pause.

“The reason Isabella attacked you.”

Khloe felt cold.

Richard continued.

“It was never about jealousy.”

“It was never about replacing you.”

“It was about stopping something from being born.”

Marcus stepped forward.

“What are you talking about?”

Richard looked at Khloe’s stomach.

“The child you are carrying…”

His voice became softer.

“Is the key to everything.”

Khloe’s face changed.

“No.”

Richard smiled.

“Yes.”

“The child carries information Sofia left behind.”

Marcus froze.

“That’s impossible.”

Richard looked at him.

“You really thought Sofia disappeared without protecting herself?”

A long silence.

“She knew someone would come after her.”

“She knew someone would try to erase the truth.”

“And before she vanished…”

“She placed the evidence somewhere nobody could find it.”

Marcus stared.

“Where?”

Richard smiled.

Then looked at Khloe.

“Inside the one person nobody would ever suspect.”

Khloe felt her heartbeat increase.

“No…”

Richard stood.

“The truth about the Thorne empire…”

“The reason Sofia disappeared…”

“The reason Isabella tried to stop you…”

“All of it is connected to your unborn child.”

Nobody spoke.

Then Richard walked toward the door.

Marcus followed.

“Where are you going?”

Richard stopped.

Without turning around, he said:

“To give you a chance.”

Marcus frowned.

“A chance for what?”

Richard smiled.

“To decide whether you want to protect your wife…”

“Or protect your empire.”

The door closed.

And for the first time…

Marcus Thorne realized the worst secret was not what his father had done.

It was what his father had planned next.

Because somewhere outside that hospital…

Someone was already coming for Khloe.

And this time…

May you like

They were not planning to destroy her reputation.

They were planning to take everything she had.
