CHAPTER 18-THE FALSE VICTORY

Midnight arrived faster than anyone expected.
For most people, midnight represented the end of one day.
For the Thorne family…
It represented the beginning of a war.
A war that had lasted decades.
A war built on stolen identities.
Hidden documents.
Destroyed relationships.
And people who believed power mattered more than truth.
Khloe stood in front of the mirror inside the private guest room of Thorne Manor.
The same mansion she had heard about for years.
The same place where Richard Thorne built his empire.
The same place where her mother lost everything.
She expected to feel afraid.
She didn’t.
She felt something else.
Clarity.
For the first time in her life, every missing piece was finally connecting.
Her mother’s disappearance.
Marcus’s secrets.
Sofia’s evidence.
Daniel’s obsession.
Richard’s lies.
Everything led here.
To this house.
To this night.
A knock came at the door.
“Come in.”
Marcus entered.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Because they both understood how much had changed.
Twenty-four hours ago, they were a billionaire couple preparing for the arrival of their child.
Now they were walking into the center of a conspiracy that had destroyed generations of families.
“You should not be here.”
Marcus finally said.
Khloe looked at him through the mirror.
“You already said that.”
“And you ignored me.”
“Yes.”
A small smile appeared on his face.
The first real smile in days.
“You know you are impossible.”
Khloe turned.
“So I have been told.”
Marcus stepped closer.
But this time…
He did not try to protect her by keeping her away.
He simply stood beside her.
“I’m sorry.”
Khloe looked at him.
“For what?”
“For everything.”
A pause.
“For hiding things.”
“For making decisions without you.”
“For believing I had to carry everything alone.”
Khloe studied him.
The old Marcus would have defended himself.
Explained.
Negotiated.
The new Marcus did something different.
He admitted.
“I can’t change the past.”
He continued.
“But I can stop repeating it.”
Khloe looked down.
“And what happens after tonight?”
Marcus answered honestly.
“I don’t know.”
That answer surprised her.
Because Marcus Thorne always knew.
But now…
He finally understood something.
Sometimes honesty was more powerful than certainty.
Khloe nodded.
“Good.”
He frowned.
“Good?”
“Yes.”
“Because for the first time…”
She looked at him.
“You are not pretending.”
A silence.
Then Marcus took her hand.
Carefully.
Like he was asking permission.
Not claiming ownership.
Khloe allowed it.
Because forgiveness was not forgetting.
But it was a beginning.
A few minutes later…
The group gathered in the underground entrance beneath Thorne Manor.
Marcus.
Khloe.
Claire.
Isabella.
Alexander.
The hidden passage had been discovered through one of Ethan Bellini’s old maps.
The same man who had secretly trained Marcus years ago.
The same man who knew Richard’s empire was built on theft.
Alexander carried a small device.
A tracking signal.
Marcus looked at him.
“You’re sure this will work?”
Alexander nodded.
“If Daniel thinks he controls the situation, he will reveal everything.”
Isabella looked at Khloe.
“And if he doesn’t?”
Khloe answered.
“He will.”
Everyone looked at her.
“Why?”
“Because Daniel has the same weakness as every person who believes they are unbeatable.”
“What weakness?”
Khloe looked toward the mansion above them.
“He wants everyone to know he won.”
Then the sound of footsteps echoed.
They froze.
Someone was coming.
A figure appeared at the end of the hallway.
Richard Thorne.
Alive.
Calm.
Still powerful.
“Interesting.”
He looked at them.
“You actually found the passage.”
Marcus stepped forward.
“Did you build this?”
Richard smiled.
“No.”
“Your grandfather did.”
The answer shocked Marcus.
Richard continued.
“He knew exactly what kind of man I would become.”
“He knew one day someone would need a way out.”
Khloe stared.
“You hated him.”
Richard looked at her.
“No.”
A pause.
“I hated that he was right.”
The honesty was unexpected.
Marcus watched his father carefully.
“Where is Daniel?”
Richard smiled.
“You still think Daniel is the final enemy.”
Marcus frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Richard looked at Khloe.
“It means you still don’t understand.”
Khloe stepped forward.
“Understand what?”
Richard’s expression became serious.
“Daniel believes he controls this game.”
“But he does not.”
Silence.
“Then who does?”
Richard looked at the ceiling.
“At the person who convinced all of us to destroy each other.”
Everyone froze.
Marcus’s expression changed.
“Someone else?”
Richard nodded.
“Yes.”
“Someone who has been moving pieces for years.”
Khloe felt cold.
“Who?”
Before Richard could answer…
The lights in the underground room turned on.
A voice came through the speakers.
“Father.”
Everyone turned.
Daniel.
His voice.
Everywhere.
Richard’s expression changed.
For the first time…
He looked concerned.
Daniel laughed.
“I knew you would come here.”
Marcus looked around.
“Where are you?”
“Above you.”
A pause.
“In my house.”
Richard’s face hardened.
“Your house?”
Daniel laughed.
“Yes.”
“Because everything you built…”
“Everything you stole…”
“Everything you controlled…”
“Now belongs to me.”
The mansion screens activated.
Daniel appeared.
Standing in the main hall.
Holding the original inheritance document.
The real one.
Everyone froze.
Khloe looked at Marcus.
“How?”
Marcus didn’t answer.
Because he didn’t know.
Daniel smiled.
“You were looking for the vault.”
“You were looking for the truth.”
“But you never realized…”
“The truth was never hidden.”
He lifted the document.
“It was given to me.”
Marcus stepped forward.
“By who?”
Daniel smiled.
And then the camera moved.
Revealing someone standing beside him.
Someone nobody expected.
Someone Khloe trusted.
Someone who had been helping them.
Someone who had guided them toward the truth.
Everyone froze.
Because the person beside Daniel…
Was Alexander.
But not the Alexander standing beside them.
The screen showed another Alexander.
Standing next to Daniel.
Smiling.
Daniel spoke:
“Meet the man who has been protecting my family all along.”
Khloe felt her blood run cold.
Because suddenly everything made sense.
The location leak.
The access codes.
The missing documents.
The perfect timing.
Alexander had not been forced.
At least…
Not the Alexander on the screen.
Marcus looked at the man beside him.
Then at the screen.
Two Alexanders.
One truth.
One lie.
And nobody knew which one was real.
Daniel smiled.
“Welcome to the final stage.”
“You spent your entire life searching for the traitor.”
A pause.
“But you were looking at the wrong person.”
The screen went black.
And the mansion doors locked automatically.
The trap had closed.
But Daniel had made one mistake.
He believed the only people capable of betrayal…
Were the ones who wanted power.
May you like
He forgot about the people who wanted justice.
And Khloe Thorne was about to prove the difference.
