CHAPTER 3-THE SECRET INSIDE THE THORNE EMPIRE

The silence after Isabella’s confession was heavier than any scream.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Nobody even seemed to breathe.
Because one sentence had changed the entire meaning of the night.
“The child was yours, Marcus.”
Those words stayed inside the hospital suite like smoke.
Impossible to ignore.
Impossible to escape.
Khloe looked at her husband.
She searched his face for the answer before he even spoke.
Because after seven months of marriage, she knew Marcus better than anyone.
She knew when he was angry.
She knew when he was stressed.
She knew when he was hiding something.
And right now…
He wasn’t confused.
He wasn’t surprised.
He looked like a man watching a door he had spent years keeping locked finally being opened.
“Marcus.”
Her voice cracked slightly.
“Is it true?”
He didn’t answer.
That was the worst answer he could have given.
Khloe slowly stepped back.
Not because she was afraid of him.
Because she was trying to understand how the man she loved could carry something this enormous and never tell her.
“How long?”
Marcus looked at her.
“Khloe…”
“How long have you known about Sofia?”
The room remained silent.
“Four years?”
Another pause.
“Five?”
Marcus lowered his eyes.
“Almost six.”
The pain on her face was immediate.
Not anger.
Not yet.
Just disbelief.
Six years.
Six years of memories.
Six years of trust.
Six years of believing their marriage was built on honesty.
And now she was learning that there was an entire chapter of his life where she had never existed.
“Six years…”
She whispered.
“You have carried this secret for six years.”
Marcus took a step toward her.
“I wanted to tell you.”
Khloe looked at him.
“When?”
He stopped.
“When were you planning to tell me?”
Another silence.
“After our child was born?”
Marcus didn’t respond.
And that was enough.
Khloe laughed quietly.
A broken sound.
“So that was the plan?”
“You would decide when I deserved the truth?”
“No.”
Marcus shook his head.
“That’s not what happened.”
“Then explain.”
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Because for the first time in years…
Marcus Thorne had no strategy.
No negotiation.
No carefully prepared answer.
Only guilt.
Alexander Thorne watched them carefully.
He had seen Marcus survive hostile takeovers.
He had seen him defeat enemies who had spent decades trying to destroy his company.
But he had never seen him unable to speak.
“Marcus.”
Alexander’s voice was low.
“You need to start from the beginning.”
Marcus closed his eyes.
Then he nodded.
“Six years ago…”
He looked toward the window.
“Before I met Khloe, my father was still alive.”
The name alone changed the atmosphere.
Richard Thorne.
The man who built the empire.
The man who believed emotions were weaknesses.
The man who taught Marcus that power was the only protection in the world.
“My father had one rule.”
Marcus continued.
“Never trust anyone outside the family.”
Khloe listened quietly.
“And Sofia?”
Marcus looked down.
“Sofia was different.”
“She wasn’t interested in money.”
“She wasn’t impressed by the Thorne name.”
“She challenged my father.”
“That made him hate her.”
Isabella suddenly laughed softly.
Everyone looked at her.
“You still don’t understand.”
Marcus turned.
“Understand what?”
Isabella’s expression changed.
“You think Sofia was a victim.”
“She wasn’t.”
Khloe stared at her.
“Then what was she?”
Isabella looked at Marcus.
“She was the only person who knew what your father really built.”
Marcus said nothing.
Because he knew.
He knew exactly what she meant.
Khloe noticed.
“What did Richard Thorne do?”
Marcus remained silent.
Alexander answered.
“Richard created a hidden division inside Thorne Global Holdings.”
Khloe looked at him.
“A hidden division?”
“Yes.”
Alexander’s expression was serious.
“An operation that officially did not exist.”
Marcus continued.
“It handled private investments.”
“Political relationships.”
“International deals.”
Khloe frowned.
“That sounds like normal billionaire business.”
Marcus looked at her.
“It wasn’t.”
A pause.
“The money came from companies that didn’t exist.”
“The contracts were fake.”
“The accounts were hidden.”
Khloe’s face changed.
“You mean…”
“Yes.”
Marcus nodded.
“My father built a secret financial network.”
The room became colder.
“And Sofia discovered it.”
Marcus continued.
“She was an accountant working for one of our subsidiaries.”
“She noticed numbers that didn’t make sense.”
“Millions moving through companies with no employees.”
“Assets being transferred to people who had never worked for Thorne.”
“She started investigating.”
Khloe looked at Isabella.
“And she told you?”
Marcus nodded.
“She trusted me.”
“Not my father.”
“Me.”
The guilt in his voice became stronger.
“She came to me because she believed I was different.”
Khloe quietly asked:
“Were you?”
Marcus looked at her.
That question hurt him more than anything else.
“I thought I was.”
The answer was honest.
And that made it worse.
“Then what happened?”
Marcus looked at Isabella.
The woman standing across the room.
The woman who had destroyed her own mask.
“The night Sofia disappeared…”
Marcus paused.
“I received a message from her.”
“What did it say?”
Marcus reached into his jacket.
Even after everything…
He still carried it.
A small folded piece of paper.
Old.
Worn.
Carefully protected.
He handed it to Alexander.
Alexander unfolded it.
Then read.
His face changed.
“What?”
Khloe asked.
Alexander looked at Marcus.
“She wrote one sentence.”
“What sentence?”
Alexander slowly looked at Khloe.
“She wrote…”
“Marcus Thorne will lose everything if they find out the child survived.”
The room froze.
Khloe felt her heart race.
“The child survived?”
Marcus looked away.
Isabella whispered:
“Exactly.”
Khloe turned to her.
“You knew.”
Isabella didn’t deny it.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Isabella’s expression became complicated.
For the first time, Khloe saw something unexpected.
Not hatred.
Not jealousy.
Fear.
“Because Sofia trusted me.”
Marcus looked shocked.
“You?”
Isabella looked at him.
“Yes.”
“You think I always wanted your life?”
A bitter smile appeared.
“You never understood anything about me.”
Khloe watched them carefully.
There was history here.
A history nobody had explained.
Isabella continued.
“Sofia was my cousin.”
Marcus froze.
The room became silent.
Khloe looked at Marcus.
“You didn’t know?”
“No.”
Marcus whispered.
“I thought…”
“You thought she was just another person who disappeared from your past.”
Isabella’s voice became sharper.
“But Sofia was family.”
She looked at the security footage.
“At first, I hated you.”
Marcus stared at her.
“You hated me?”
“Yes.”
“Because Sofia trusted you.”
“She believed you would protect her.”
“She believed you would protect the child.”
“And what did you do?”
Marcus looked down.
Isabella stepped closer.
“You listened to your father.”
The words hit him.
Because they were true.
Six years ago, Marcus had made a choice.
A choice he had spent years regretting.
Khloe looked at her husband.
“What choice?”
Marcus didn’t answer.
Isabella did.
“He abandoned Sofia.”
“No.”
Marcus immediately responded.
“That’s not what happened.”
“Then tell her.”
Isabella pointed at him.
“Tell your wife what you did.”
Marcus remained silent.
Khloe’s heart sank.
“Marcus…”
Finally, he spoke.
“I believed my father.”
A pause.
“I believed Sofia was trying to destroy our family.”
Khloe stared.
“You believed she was lying?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Marcus’s jaw tightened.
“Because my father showed me evidence.”
“What evidence?”
Marcus looked at the floor.
“Documents.”
“Messages.”
“Financial records.”
“He convinced me Sofia was stealing from the company.”
Khloe whispered:
“And you believed him.”
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.”
A painful silence.
“And later?”
Marcus swallowed.
“Later I discovered the evidence was fake.”
Khloe closed her eyes.
Because now she understood.
The secret was not only that Sofia existed.
The secret was that Marcus had helped destroy someone innocent.
But before she could ask another question…
The hospital room lights suddenly flickered.
Everyone turned.
Then Alexander’s phone rang.
He answered.
His face changed after only five seconds.
“Say that again.”
Everyone watched him.
“What happened?”
Alexander slowly lowered the phone.
His expression was serious.
“The security footage backup…”
A pause.
“Someone just deleted it.”
Marcus immediately looked toward the screen.
Impossible.
The footage was gone.
But Alexander continued.
“That’s not the worst part.”
Khloe looked at him.
“What could be worse?”
Alexander looked directly at Marcus.
“The person who accessed the system…”
“He used your personal authorization code.”
Marcus froze.
“My code?”
“Yes.”
Nobody spoke.
Because only one person had access to Marcus Thorne’s private security credentials.
Marcus himself.
Or someone who knew him better than anyone.
Then Isabella quietly whispered:
“He’s here.”
Khloe looked at her.
“Who?”
Isabella’s face turned pale.
“The person who started all of this.”
A pause.
“The person who made Sofia disappear.”
The hospital door slowly opened.
And standing outside…
Was a man everyone believed had been dead for four years.
Richard Thorne.
Marcus’s father.
May you like
Alive.
And smiling.
