CHAPTER 10-THE TRUTH BEHIND MARCUS’ SILENCE

The photograph felt heavier than it should have.
It was only a piece of paper.
Old.
Faded.
Slightly damaged from years of being hidden.
But in Khloe Thorne’s hands…
It felt like the entire history of her life had been reduced to one image.
Her mother.
Claire Thorne.
Richard Thorne.
And a little girl standing between them.
A little girl with the same eyes.
The same expression.
The same small scar above her eyebrow.
Her.
Khloe stared at the photograph.
“No…”
The word escaped before she could stop it.
Marcus stepped closer.
“Khloe.”
She looked at him.
“Tell me this isn’t real.”
He didn’t answer.
And once again…
His silence hurt more than the truth.
“Marcus.”
His face changed.
Because he knew.
This was the moment.
The moment where there was no more room for protection.
No more room for secrets.
No more room for carefully chosen words.
Only the truth.
“I need to explain.”
Khloe laughed softly.
A painful sound.
“That’s what you always say.”
Marcus lowered his eyes.
“I know.”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“You don’t know.”
Her voice trembled.
“You don’t know what it feels like to discover your entire life was built on things people decided you didn’t deserve to know.”
Nobody spoke.
Because nobody could argue.
She was right.
Marcus had spent years believing silence was protection.
But silence had only created a deeper wound.
Alexander looked at the photograph.
“There is something else.”
Khloe looked at him.
“What?”
Alexander pointed at the image.
“The date.”
She looked down.
The photograph was taken twenty-five years ago.
Khloe frowned.
“That’s impossible.”
“What?”
“My mother died when I was twelve.”
“Yes.”
“And Richard was already running Thorne Global Holdings.”
“Yes.”
“But why would they take a picture together?”
Nobody answered.
Until Marcus spoke.
“Because they weren’t enemies at first.”
Khloe looked at him.
“What?”
“My father and your mother…”
He paused.
“They were partners.”
The revelation changed the atmosphere.
Khloe looked confused.
“Partners?”
Marcus nodded.
“Before Richard became the man everyone feared…”
“He had someone who challenged him.”
“Someone who balanced him.”
“Your mother.”
Khloe looked at the photograph again.
“My mother worked with him?”
“Yes.”
“She helped build the empire.”
A silence.
“Then why did he erase her?”
Marcus looked at the floor.
“Because she discovered what the empire would become.”
Khloe waited.
“Richard believed power needed control.”
“He believed people were tools.”
“Your mother believed the opposite.”
“She believed the company should protect people.”
“She wanted to turn Thorne Global Holdings into something ethical.”
Khloe whispered:
“And Richard refused.”
“Yes.”
The pieces slowly connected.
Her mother.
Sofia.
The contract.
The evidence.
Everything began leading back to one battle.
A battle between two beliefs.
Power.
And responsibility.
“But why was I called the real heir?”
Khloe asked.
Nobody answered immediately.
Then Isabella spoke.
“Because Richard was never the rightful owner.”
Marcus looked at her.
“What are you saying?”
She looked at Khloe.
“Your mother was.”
Silence.
Khloe stared.
“That’s impossible.”
“No.”
Isabella shook her head.
“It’s the truth.”
“Claire Thorne owned the original controlling shares.”
Marcus froze.
“My father said…”
“Your father lied.”
Isabella interrupted.
“He changed the documents.”
“He manipulated the board.”
“He convinced everyone Claire abandoned the family.”
Khloe looked at Marcus.
“And you inherited everything.”
Marcus closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
The answer hurt.
Not because he chose it.
Because he never knew.
“My entire life…”
He whispered.
“Everything I built…”
Khloe looked at him.
“Was built on something stolen.”
Marcus didn’t defend himself.
Because he didn’t know how.
Then Alexander’s phone rang.
He answered.
Listened.
His expression changed.
“What happened?”
Everyone watched.
Finally, he ended the call.
“The board meeting.”
Marcus frowned.
“What about it?”
“They moved it.”
“Why?”
“Because Richard is alive.”
A silence.
“The investors know.”
Marcus understood immediately.
“If they know my father is alive…”
“They will question your ownership.”
Alexander nodded.
“Exactly.”
Khloe looked between them.
“What happens now?”
Marcus answered.
“My entire company could collapse.”
“No.”
Alexander corrected him.
“Worse.”
Everyone looked at him.
“The board can legally remove Marcus.”
“Why?”
“Because the original ownership agreement has a condition.”
Marcus frowned.
“What condition?”
Alexander looked at Khloe.
“If the original heir appears…”
“The current leadership loses authority.”
Khloe felt cold.
“Me?”
Alexander nodded.
“Yes.”
The room went silent.
Because suddenly everything made sense.
Richard wasn’t after the evidence.
Not completely.
He wasn’t after Sofia.
Not only.
He wasn’t even after Marcus.
He was after Khloe.
Because Khloe was the one thing he could not control.
The real heir.
The person who could destroy everything he built.
Marcus looked at Khloe.
“I’m sorry.”
She stared at him.
“For what?”
“For bringing you into this.”
Khloe shook her head.
“No.”
Marcus looked surprised.
“No?”
She looked at the photograph.
“At first I thought you were the person who betrayed me.”
A pause.
“But now I realize something.”
“What?”
“You were also trapped.”
Marcus said nothing.
Because hearing that from her meant more than he expected.
But Khloe continued.
“That doesn’t erase what you did.”
“I know.”
“It doesn’t make hiding the truth okay.”
“I know.”
“But it means we stop fighting each other.”
Marcus looked at her.
“Then what do we do?”
Khloe looked at the photograph.
At her mother.
At the family that had spent years hiding her.
Then she looked at Marcus.
“We find the truth.”
For the first time that night…
Marcus saw something different in his wife.
Not fear.
Not weakness.
Determination.
But before they could make a plan…
The hospital lights suddenly shut off.
Complete darkness.
A second later…
The emergency lights turned on.
Red.
Flashing.
Warning.
Everyone froze.
Then a sound came from the hallway.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Calm.
Coming closer.
Marcus immediately moved in front of Khloe.
Alexander reached for his phone.
Isabella backed away.
Then the hospital door opened.
A woman stood there.
Older.
Pale.
With tears in her eyes.
Khloe stopped breathing.
Because she recognized her.
Not from memory.
From the photograph.
The same face.
Twenty-five years older.
The same eyes.
The same scar.
The woman whispered:
“Khloe…”
Everyone froze.
Because the impossible had happened again.
May you like
Claire Thorne was alive.
And she had come back for her daughter.
