Chapter 8 - THE WHISPER IN THE SHADOWS

The night passed in a tense quiet. By dawn, the storm had passed, leaving behind a crisp, fog-covered mountain morning.
Emily woke up on the couch, wrapped in the wool blanket. Daniel was sitting at the dining table, surrounded by printouts, legal documents, and his laptop. He hadn't slept a single wink.
"Morning," he said softly, offering her a steaming mug of coffee. "I've been going through the electronic cross-references of the ledger. The paper evidence is solid, but we have a major problem."
Emily took the mug, wrapping her hands around the warmth. "What kind of problem?"
"Arthur Sterling isn't just a businessman anymore. He's currently running for the State Senate," Daniel explained, turning the laptop screen toward her. "The State Prosecutor, Richard Hayes, is one of Sterlingâs biggest political allies. If we hand this binder over to the local authorities, it will disappear into an evidence locker before the sun sets."
"Then what do we do?" Emily asked, feeling a surge of dread. "Who else can we trust?"
"We go above the state level," Daniel said firmly. "I have a contact in the Federal Financial Crimes Division in Washington. His name is Special Agent Marcus Vanceâhe's my cousin, and the only person in my family who broke away from my mother's influence years ago. But to initiate a federal raid on Sterlingâs headquarters, he needs the original physical hard drive from the Reed & Sterling main server."
Emily paused, searching her memory. "The main server? But the old headquarters was demolished five years ago!"
"The physical building was demolished, but the server racks were moved to a secure underground facility in the financial districtâowned by a holding company called Apex Storage," Daniel said. "And guess who holds the master key card to that facility?"
Emilyâs eyes widened. "Vanessa."
Suddenly, the cabinâs security panel on the wall began to beep rhythmically.
Daniel snapped his laptop shut and stood up instantly. He walked over to the window, pulling the curtain back an inch.
A silver luxury SUV was parked at the edge of the driveway. Stepping out of the vehicle was not a team of hired thugs, but Arthur Sterling himself, wearing a tailored charcoal coat, flanked by two bodyguards.
"Stay inside," Daniel ordered softly, reaching for his coat.
"Daniel, no! He's dangerous!" Emily grabbed his arm.
May you like
"He won't shoot me on my own property, Emily. He wants to talk," Daniel said reassuringly. "Lock the door behind me."
