Chapter 17 - THE UNRAVELING

Gasps erupted throughout the ballroom. Reporters scrambled, pointing their cameras toward the back of the hall.

Margaret Vance stumbled backward, her hand clutching her throat, her face turning as white as a sheet. "No... it's impossible..." she whispered, her voice caught in her throat.

Vanessa let out a muffled shriek, hiding her face behind her hands as the cameras caught her expression of pure terror.

Arthur Sterling’s eyes flared with murderous rage, but he quickly forced a smile, leaning back into the podium microphone. "Daniel! What a wonderful surprise! We thought you were—"

"Save it, Arthur," Daniel said, walking down the central aisle toward the stage, his steps heavy and deliberate. The crowd parted for him like the Red Sea. "The play is over."

Emily walked beside Daniel, holding a sealed federal document in her hand.

When they reached the base of the stage, Daniel stepped up onto the platform, looking Arthur directly in the eye.

"You tried to kill us last night in the Apex vault, Arthur," Daniel said, his voice carrying clearly to every live news broadcast across the state. "Just like you destroyed Benjamin Reed fifteen years ago. Just like you framed his daughter, Emily."

"This is slander!" Arthur shouted, his composure completely shattering. He turned to the security guards near the stage. "Security! Remove these intruders immediately!"

"Don't move!" Special Agent Marcus Vance barked, stepping onto the stage and flashing his federal badge. "Federal Marshals! Everyone stay where you are!"

Marcus walked up to Arthur, pulling a thick arrest warrant from his jacket.

"Arthur Sterling, you are under arrest for federal mail fraud, wire fraud, grand larceny, corporate sabotage, and conspiracy to commit murder."

Marcus turned to Margaret Vance, his own aunt, his voice heavy with sadness. "Margaret Vance, you are under arrest as a co-conspirator in federal fraud and attempted murder."

"Daniel! Tell them they're wrong! Tell them!" Margaret sobbed, reaching out for her son’s arm as a female agent stepped forward to place handcuffs around her wrists. "I did it for you! Everything I did was for you!"

Daniel looked down at his mother, his eyes filled with profound sorrow. "You didn't do it for me, Mother. You did it for yourself."
