Chapter 3 - THE UNWELCOME GUEST

By the next morning, news of the ruined engagement party had leaked to the city's elite tabloids. Though the Vance family tried to keep the details quiet, rumors of a framed maid and a fallen heiress spread like wildfire.

Emily stood in the guest suite Daniel had assigned her on the main floor. The cotton maid dress had been replaced with simple, high-quality civilian clothes Daniel had ordered for her. Yet, looking in the mirror, she felt more out of place than ever.

A sharp knock at the door interrupted her thoughts.

Before she could answer, the door swung open, and Margaret Vance walked in. Daniel's mother was a woman forged in old money and rigid tradition. She wore an immaculate lavender wool suit, her gray hair styled into a flawless bun. Her eyes were hard as flints.

"Good morning, Emily," Margaret said, stepping into the room without an invitation.

"Mrs. Vance," Emily replied, holding her head high despite the woman's intimidating presence.

"Let us drop the pleasantries," Margaret said, placing her pearl-embellished handbag on the vanity table. "What happened last night was appalling. Vanessa showed a disgraceful lack of class, and Daniel was right to remove her from the house. However... that does not mean you belong here."

"I never claimed I belonged in your mansion, Mrs. Vance."

"Didn't you?" Margaret smirked, her eyes cold. "You are Eleanor Reed’s daughter. You came into my home under a fake resume, worked as a domestic servant, and somehow managed to charm my son into becoming your personal champion. You think you are playing a subtle game of revenge, child. But you are out of your depth."

"I am here for justice, not games," Emily said firmly.

"Justice is an expensive illusion," Margaret countered, leaning in closer. "Arthur Sterling controls thirty percent of Vance Enterprises' supply chain. If Daniel goes to war with Sterling over an old family grudge from fifteen years ago, our stock value will plunge. I will not allow my son to ruin this family's legacy for a dead man's reputation."

Margaret pulled a checkbook from her bag, signed her name with a gold pen, and ripped the slip out. She slapped it onto the table.

"Five million dollars," Margaret said smoothly. "Take it, leave the city, and never speak to Daniel again. Consider it compensation for your father’s legacy."

Emily looked at the check, then raised her eyes to meet Margaret’s cold gaze. Slowly, deliberately, Emily picked up the piece of paper, tore it down the middle, and let the pieces flutter to the carpet.

"My father's honor isn't for sale, Mrs. Vance," Emily said softly. "And neither am I."
