Chapter 2 - SHADOWS OF THE VANCE EMPIRE

Emily’s breath caught in her throat. The ambient hum of the study’s grand clock seemed to freeze.

"You... you know?" she whispered.

"I’ve known since the day I found the silver locket you dropped in the library," Daniel said softly. He pulled a small velvet box from his desk drawer, opened it, and set it on the polished mahogany table between them. Inside lay an antique silver locket carved with the initials E.R.—Emily Reed.

"My mother's," Emily breathed, her eyes shining with fresh tears.

"Your mother was Eleanor Reed, co-founder of Reed & Sterling Logistics," Daniel explained, his voice filled with remorse. "Fifteen years ago, the company collapsed overnight after a massive fraud scandal. Your father was framed, sent to prison, and died behind bars. Your mother disappeared from public view, taking you with her into obscurity."

"My mother died three years ago in a public hospital, Daniel," Emily said, her voice turning cold and sharp. "She worked three jobs just to keep a roof over my head. She died of exhaustion because the Sterling family froze all our assets and stripped us of our name!"

"And Vanessa's father, Arthur Sterling, was the man who orchestrated the entire thing," Daniel finished the sentence for her. "He absorbed your father’s shares, built the Sterling Empire, and secured his position among the city's elite. When Vanessa saw you working here, she recognized your face. She knew that if I looked too closely into your background, the truth about the Sterling family's wealth would come out."

Emily looked away, staring out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the rain lash against the glass. "I didn't come here to steal your family's money, Daniel. I came here to find the financial ledgers my father hid in this house before it was sold to your family. I wanted to clear my father's name."

"I know," Daniel said softly. "And I'm going to help you finish what your father started."

Outside the manor, sitting in her luxury sedan parked down the dark driveway, Vanessa pounded her steering wheel in fury. Her phone buzzed on the passenger seat. The screen lit up with the name Father.

She picked it up with a trembling hand. "Dad... it went wrong. Daniel checked the CCTV."

On the other end of the line, Arthur Sterling’s voice was like ice. "You utter fool. I told you to handle the girl quietly. If Daniel Vance starts digging into the Reed estate, he won't just break off the engagement... he will destroy everything we've built. Get back to the estate house immediately. We need to activate Phase Two."
