CHAPTER 7 — I WAS NEVER THE POOR WIFE THEY THOUGHT I WAS

Victoria's final words wouldn't leave my mind.

Not the man you married.

The man he became.

I stood in Daniel's office staring at him.

For ten years, I had memorized his face.

I knew how his eyes looked when he was tired.

I knew the tiny crease that appeared between his eyebrows when he was lying.

I knew the way he rubbed his thumb against his wedding ring when he was nervous.

I knew the sound of his footsteps coming down our hallway.

I knew the way he said my name when he wanted forgiveness.

And yet, standing there that afternoon, I realized something terrifying.

I didn't know my husband at all.

Daniel looked at me.

“What did Victoria say?”

I remained silent.

“Emily?”

I turned away.

Richard watched both of us carefully.

“Maybe we should leave.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“I'm staying.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“Please tell me what she said.”

I finally looked at him.

“She said you're not the man I married.”

His face went pale.

“She said you're the man you became.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I knew this was coming.”

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?”

He didn't answer.

“Daniel.”

He looked at his father.

Richard said nothing.

I walked toward my husband.

“Were you working with Victor?”

“No.”

“Were you working with my mother-in-law?”

“No.”

“Were you planning to steal my inheritance?”

Daniel looked down.

“I was.”

My chest tightened.

“But you stopped.”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Six months ago.”

“Because of Victoria?”

“Yes.”

I stared at him.

“What did she show you?”

Daniel walked toward his desk.

He opened a locked drawer.

Inside was a black notebook.

He placed it in front of me.

“This.”

I opened it.

Every page contained names.

Dates.

Payments.

Meeting locations.

At first, I didn't understand.

Then I saw one name repeated again and again.

Margaret Carter.

Beside it were dates.

And amounts.

$40,000.

$125,000.

$300,000.

$750,000.

$1.2 million.

Millions had passed through her accounts.

But the last page was different.

There was one name.

Daniel Carter.

I looked at him.

“What is this?”

“My debt.”

I kept reading.

The total was written in red.

$8,742,000.

I looked up.

“You really owe that much.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

He sat down.

“When I started my company, my mother gave me the initial capital.”

I frowned.

“She said it came from family investments.”

“It didn't.”

“Where did it come from?”

“Victor.”

My stomach turned.

“How much?”

“Five hundred thousand.”

“And then?”

“I lost it.”

“How?”

“Bad investments.”

“Then you borrowed more.”

“Yes.”

“From Victor.”

“Yes.”

I closed the notebook.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I was ashamed.”

“That isn't the whole reason.”

He looked at me.

“No.”

“What was the real reason?”

Daniel's voice became quiet.

“Because Victor offered to erase my debt.”

“In exchange for my trust.”

“Yes.”

“And you agreed.”

“At first.”

I stared at him.

“What changed?”

He looked toward the window.

“I met Victoria.”

I sighed.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

“She showed me something.”

“What?”

“A recording of my mother meeting Victor.”

“When?”

“Three years ago.”

My eyes narrowed.

“Three years?”

“Yes.”

“What were they discussing?”

Daniel hesitated.

“You.”

I felt my heart sink.

“What about me?”

“They were discussing how to make you sign over control of the trust.”

“How?”

“By convincing you the trust didn't exist.”

I laughed.

“That wouldn't have been difficult.”

Daniel looked at me.

“What?”

“I already believed I had nothing.”

He looked ashamed.

“You were exactly where they wanted you.”

I closed my eyes.

I thought about the small apartment where Daniel and I had lived after our wedding.

The cheap furniture.

The unpaid bills.

The endless arguments about money.

I had thought we were building a life together.

They had been building a cage around me.

Then Daniel said something that made me look up.

“There was one thing they didn't know.”

“What?”

“Your father had prepared another account.”

I frowned.

“What account?”

“I don't know.”

“You just said there was another account.”

“Victoria found evidence of it.”

“Where?”

“In Switzerland.”

I stared at him.

“Switzerland?”

He nodded.

“Your father opened it under a different name.”

“Whose?”

Daniel looked directly at me.

“Yours.”

I couldn't speak.

Richard stepped forward.

“That's why the trust was never the full inheritance.”

I turned toward him.

“What do you mean?”

Richard took the documents.

“Thomas divided his assets.”

“How?”

“Part went into the Carter Family Trust.”

“And the rest?”

“Into an offshore structure.”

My stomach tightened.

“How much?”

Richard looked at Daniel.

Daniel answered.

“Approximately twelve million.”

I stared at them.

“Twelve million dollars?”

“Yes.”

“And no one knew?”

“Victor suspected.”

“Margaret?”

“No.”

“Daniel?”

“Not until Victoria showed me.”

I looked at the black notebook again.

“What happened to that money?”

Daniel shook his head.

“We don't know.”

“Then find out.”

He looked at me.

“I will.”

I stood.

“No.”

He frowned.

“I'll find it.”

“You're not doing this for me.”

“What?”

“You're doing it because you want forgiveness.”

His face fell.

I continued.

“You want to become the good man again.”

“I want to make things right.”

“You can't.”

He swallowed.

“I know.”

I walked toward the door.

Richard followed.

Daniel called after me.

“Emily.”

I stopped.

“I never stopped loving you.”

I looked back.

“That is the problem.”

He said nothing.

“You loved me.”

I paused.

“But not enough to tell me the truth.”

Then I left.

That evening, I met Jonathan Reed at the hospital.

His face was bruised.

One arm was wrapped in a sling.

But his eyes were sharp.

He smiled when he saw me.

“Thomas would be proud.”

I sat beside his bed.

“I need answers.”

“You're finally asking the right questions.”

“What is the Swiss account?”

Jonathan's expression changed.

“So you found out.”

“Daniel told me.”

Jonathan sighed.

“I was hoping you wouldn't learn about that yet.”

“Why?”

“Because accessing it may trigger something.”

“What?”

“An automatic transfer.”

“To whom?”

“To you.”

I stared.

“When?”

“Your thirty-sixth birthday.”

I looked at the calendar.

Tomorrow.

My birthday.

Jonathan continued.

“Your father designed the account so it would remain dormant until you reached the age he believed you could protect yourself.”

“Why thirty-six?”

“Because he knew Victor would try to control you through your marriage.”

I felt tears forming.

“My father knew Daniel would marry me?”

Jonathan shook his head.

“No.”

He looked directly at me.

“He knew someone would.”

The room went silent.

I frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“Thomas had reason to believe Victor would eventually try to place someone close to you.”

I stared.

“You think my marriage was arranged?”

Jonathan didn't answer.

That was enough.

“Was Daniel chosen?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Jonathan closed his eyes.

“I don't know.”

I stood.

“You know more than you're telling me.”

“I do.”

“Then tell me.”

He reached beneath his pillow.

He pulled out a sealed envelope.

My name was written across it.

EMILY CARTER — OPEN ONLY AFTER THE SWISS ACCOUNT ACTIVATES.

I stared at it.

“You had this the whole time?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you give it to me?”

“Because your father ordered me not to.”

I took the envelope.

“When does the account activate?”

“Midnight.”

I looked at him.

“What happens then?”

“The truth becomes impossible to hide.”

At 11:57 p.m., I sat alone in a hotel room.

I didn't want to return to the mansion.

I didn't want Daniel near me.

I didn't want Margaret anywhere around me.

I wanted one quiet room.

One locked door.

One hour where nobody could lie to me.

My laptop sat on the desk.

Jonathan had given me secure access instructions.

11:58.

11:59.

Midnight.

The screen changed.

A message appeared.

WELCOME, EMILY CARTER.

Then:

IDENTITY VERIFIED.

Then:

TRUST ACTIVATED.

A list of assets appeared.

I stared.

The first account contained $4.8 million.

The second:

$3.2 million.

The third:

$2.1 million.

The fourth:

$1.9 million.

Total:

$12,034,781.46

My hands covered my mouth.

My father had left me more than twelve million dollars.

But that wasn't the biggest shock.

The next screen appeared.

PRIMARY BENEFICIARY: EMILY CARTER

Then:

SECONDARY BENEFICIARY: VICTORIA HALE

I froze.

Victoria.

My father's other daughter.

Why had he left money to both of us?

Then another message appeared.

ACTIVATION CONDITION: BOTH BENEFICIARIES MUST SURVIVE.

I stared.

Survive?

Why would my father use that word?

Then the screen changed again.

A video began playing.

My father appeared.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

I couldn't breathe.

He looked directly into the camera.

“Emily.”

My tears started falling.

“If you're watching this, I am either dead…”

He paused.

“…or hiding.”

I leaned closer.

“There are things I couldn't tell you when I was alive.”

He looked down.

“The Carter family is not what you think.”

I whispered,

“I know.”

He continued.

“Your mother was never the only woman I loved.”

My chest tightened.

“Margaret was part of my past. But she was not the greatest danger.”

He looked directly at the camera.

“The greatest danger is someone who has been watching you since childhood.”

The screen went black.

Then a name appeared.

RICHARD CARTER.

I froze.

Richard.

My father-in-law.

My protector.

The man who had supposedly spent ten years trying to save me.

The man who had given me the brown envelope.

The man who had brought me to the vault.

The man who had told me my father trusted him.

The screen changed again.

Another sentence appeared.

DO NOT TRUST RICHARD.

I stopped breathing.

Then the video resumed.

My father looked terrified.

“Emily, if Richard tells you he protected you…”

He paused.

“Ask him what he did the night I died.”

The video ended.

I sat motionless.

Then my phone rang.

Richard.

I stared at his name.

I didn't answer.

He called again.

Then again.

Finally, a message appeared.

We need to talk. Before it's too late.

I stared at the message.

Then another arrived.

Your father lied to you about me.

I looked at the video.

At my father's face.

At the warning.

And suddenly I understood.

The man I had trusted most in my husband's family—

might have been the man my father feared most.

I picked up the phone.

I called Jonathan.

He answered immediately.

“Emily?”

“Jonathan.”

“Yes?”

“Tell me the truth.”

“About what?”

“Richard.”

There was silence.

Long.

Heavy silence.

Then Jonathan whispered,

“Where are you?”

I told him.

He said,

“Lock the door.”

My heart started racing.

“Why?”

“Because if your father warned you about Richard…”

He stopped.

“Then Richard already knows the account has opened.”

At that exact moment—

someone knocked on my hotel door.

Three slow knocks.

I froze.

A man's voice came from the hallway.

“Emily.”

Richard.

I stepped backward.

His voice came again.

“Open the door.”

I didn't move.

“Emily, please.”

I looked at the security chain.

Then at my phone.

Then at the door.

Richard whispered from the other side:

“Your father didn't tell you the whole story.”

I swallowed.

“What story?”

Silence.

Then:

“The night Thomas died…”

His voice became almost inaudible.

“…I was there.”

The door handle moved.

May you like

And I realized—

whatever happened next would determine whether I survived long enough to learn the truth.
