CHAPTER 11 — MY HUSBAND WAS NEVER THE PLAN

The hangar doors locked with a deafening metallic crash.

Emily flinched.

Below them, Victor Hale stood beneath the red emergency lights as if he owned the darkness itself.

Richard remained several feet behind him.

Five armed men surrounded the hangar.

Daniel was beside Emily.

Completely still.

Victor looked up.

“Daniel.”

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“Victor.”

Emily turned toward her husband.

“You know him.”

Daniel didn't answer.

Victor smiled.

“He knows me very well.”

Emily's heart began pounding.

“What does he mean?”

Daniel finally looked at her.

“I've met him before.”

Emily stared.

“When?”

Daniel swallowed.

“Before I met you.”

Her stomach dropped.

“You told me you never knew him.”

“I didn't know his identity.”

Victor laughed softly.

“That is technically true.”

Emily looked down at him.

“Then tell me what you want.”

Victor spread his arms.

“Everything.”

“The trust?”

“No.”

“Carter Holdings?”

“No.”

Emily's voice hardened.

“Then what?”

Victor looked directly at her.

“You.”

The word echoed through the hangar.

Thomas stepped forward.

“You will not touch her.”

Victor smiled.

“Still pretending you're in control, Thomas?”

Thomas's face tightened.

“You should have died twenty years ago.”

“So should you.”

Richard lowered his eyes.

Victor noticed.

“You see, Richard understands something you never did.”

Thomas looked at him.

“What?”

“People don't disappear because they want to.”

Victor turned toward Richard.

“They disappear because someone makes them.”

Emily looked at Richard.

Her father-in-law looked exhausted.

“Richard…”

He raised his head.

“Emily, listen to me.”

Victor interrupted.

“Don't.”

Richard's expression changed.

Victor stepped closer.

“You've already lied enough.”

Emily looked between them.

“What did Richard do?”

Victor smiled.

“Ask him.”

Thomas's voice cut through the room.

“He gave me away.”

Emily froze.

Richard closed his eyes.

Thomas continued.

“He promised to help me disappear.”

Emily looked at Richard.

“You betrayed my father?”

Richard finally spoke.

“I did.”

Daniel stared at him.

“Why?”

Richard's voice shook.

“Because Victor threatened my family.”

Victor laughed.

“That's the story he tells himself.”

Richard looked at him.

“You threatened Daniel.”

“And you believed me.”

Richard clenched his fists.

“You sent men after him.”

“I sent reminders.”

Emily looked at Daniel.

“Is that why you owed him money?”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

Victor smiled.

“I didn't need Daniel's money.”

He looked at Emily.

“I needed Daniel's fear.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“What did you want from me?”

Victor answered immediately.

“Access.”

“To what?”

“To Emily.”

Silence.

Emily felt sick.

Victor continued.

“Your father built layers of protection around you. Lawyers. Trustees. Security. Hidden accounts.”

He pointed at Daniel.

“But then Daniel came along.”

Emily looked at her husband.

Victor's voice became almost conversational.

“He didn't need to break through the walls.”

“He was invited inside.”

Daniel's face hardened.

“I never worked for you.”

“You didn't have to.”

Victor smiled.

“You were indebted to people who worked for me.”

Emily remembered the $8.7 million.

The shell companies.

The forged documents.

The transfer.

Everything.

Victor had never needed Daniel to obey him directly.

He only needed Daniel to be desperate.

Emily whispered—

“Project 36.”

Victor's smile faded.

“Yes.”

Thomas stepped forward.

“Victor created the program.”

Emily looked at him.

“You said you wrote the directive.”

“I wrote the protection order.”

Thomas's voice broke.

“I didn't create Project 36.”

Victor laughed.

“You created the circumstances.”

Emily looked confused.

Thomas continued.

“After Anna died, I knew Victor would come for you.”

“So I built the trust.”

“You hid me.”

“Yes.”

“You hid Victoria.”

“Yes.”

“And Daniel?”

Thomas looked at him.

“I allowed him to remain close.”

Daniel stared.

“You used me.”

Thomas didn't deny it.

“I watched you.”

“For how long?”

“Years.”

Daniel looked devastated.

“And you knew I was drowning in debt.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Victor was using me.”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn't you help me?”

Thomas answered quietly.

“Because I needed to know whether you would betray Emily.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“So I was a test.”

Thomas looked at him.

“No.”

“You were a risk.”

Emily stepped between them.

“Enough.”

Everyone became silent.

Emily looked at Victor.

“You said Daniel was your insurance.”

“Yes.”

“Insurance against what?”

Victor's expression changed.

“Against you.”

Emily frowned.

“You don't make sense.”

Victor walked toward the center of the hangar.

“Your father made one mistake.”

Thomas stared at him.

“He assumed blood was enough.”

Victor held up a small device.

“It isn't.”

He pressed a button.

A screen descended from the ceiling.

An old video appeared.

Thomas recognized it immediately.

His face went pale.

Emily watched.

A younger Thomas stood inside a hospital room.

Anna was lying in a bed.

She looked frightened.

A newborn baby slept beside her.

Victor entered the room.

Anna looked at him.

“Please.”

Victor ignored her.

Thomas's younger voice said—

“You promised.”

Victor smiled.

“I promised you would have a child.”

Anna began crying.

“I want my daughter.”

Victor looked toward the infant.

“You'll never see her.”

Emily covered her mouth.

“That was my mother.”

Thomas nodded.

“Yes.”

The video continued.

Victor leaned toward Anna.

“Your brother thinks he can protect you.”

Anna whispered—

“Thomas will find me.”

Victor smiled.

“No.”

He looked toward the camera.

“He won't.”

The screen went black.

Emily turned toward Thomas.

“What happened after that?”

Thomas's voice shook.

“Anna died three days later.”

“How?”

“Poison.”

Emily closed her eyes.

“Who killed her?”

Thomas looked at Victor.

Victor didn't deny it.

“I did.”

Emily felt something inside her snap.

She took one step forward.

Thomas grabbed her arm.

“No.”

Victor smiled.

“That's why I need you alive.”

Emily stared at him.

“Because I'm Anna's daughter.”

“Because you're Anna's daughter.”

He raised the device.

“And because Anna left something behind.”

“What?”

Victor smiled.

“A key.”

Emily remembered the silver key.

The black key.

The hidden vault.

Her old watch.

Victor's eyes narrowed.

“You already found the vault.”

Emily said nothing.

“You found the documents.”

Still nothing.

“You found the watch.”

Emily's blood ran cold.

“How do you know about the watch?”

Victor smiled.

“Because I put it there.”

Thomas's face changed.

“No.”

Victor looked at him.

“Yes.”

Thomas whispered—

“You couldn't have.”

Victor laughed.

“I knew you would hide evidence somewhere you believed I would never search.”

He looked at Emily.

“So I made sure you would find it.”

Emily stepped back.

“You wanted me to find the vault.”

“Yes.”

“You wanted me to discover Victoria.”

“Yes.”

“You wanted me to suspect Richard.”

“Yes.”

Emily's voice trembled.

“Why?”

Victor answered—

“Because I needed everyone around you fighting each other.”

Daniel stared at Victor.

“And what happens now?”

Victor looked at him.

“Now?”

He smiled.

“Now Daniel finally learns what his role was.”

A second screen appeared.

A document filled it.

SUBJECT: DANIEL CARTER.

STATUS: INSURANCE.

OBJECTIVE:

“MAINTAIN EMOTIONAL ACCESS TO EMILY.”

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

She looked at Daniel.

He stared at the screen.

“I didn't know.”

Emily whispered—

“I know.”

Victor frowned.

Emily turned toward him.

“But you made one mistake.”

Victor's smile disappeared.

“What?”

Emily reached into her coat.

She pulled out the black notebook Daniel had given her.

Then the microchip from Thomas's watch.

“I stopped playing your game.”

Daniel looked at her.

Victor's expression hardened.

Emily smiled for the first time.

“You wanted me to find your evidence.”

She held up the chip.

“So I did.”

Victor stared.

“What did you do with it?”

Emily answered—

“I copied everything.”

The hangar went silent.

Then a phone began ringing.

Victor looked down.

His own phone.

The screen displayed one name.

UNKNOWN.

He answered.

A distorted voice said—

“You should have killed her when you had the chance.”

Victor's face changed.

Emily heard the voice too.

And she recognized it.

Richard.

But Richard was standing right there.

Emily slowly turned toward him.

Richard's face was pale.

Victor lowered the phone.

The voice continued through the speaker.

“Because now she knows who really betrayed Thomas.”

The call ended.

Richard looked at Emily.

“I didn't make that call.”

Emily believed him.

Because suddenly—

There were three players in the room.

And one of them wasn't Victor.

It was someone else.

May you like

Someone who had been controlling Victor.

And that person had just revealed themselves.
