CHAPTER 19 — THE HOUSE THAT WAS NEVER EMPTY

The Carter mansion was silent when Emily returned.

Too silent.

The same house where Margaret had slapped her on Christmas night now looked completely different.

The dining room lights were still on.

The Christmas tree still stood in the corner.

Her wedding ring was gone.

But everything else remained exactly where she had left it.

Emily stepped through the front door.

Daniel followed.

Behind them came Thomas, Jonathan, Victoria, Richard, and Margaret.

Emily looked around.

“This is my house.”

Thomas nodded.

“Yes.”

“But someone else is inside.”

Jonathan whispered—

“Alexander.”

Daniel locked the door.

“Then let's find him.”

They moved through the mansion.

No footsteps.

No voices.

Nothing.

Emily walked into the dining room.

The table was still covered with the remains of Christmas dinner.

She stared at the chair where Margaret had sat.

Then at the place where she had placed her wedding ring.

A small object lay on the table.

A black envelope.

Emily picked it up.

Her name was written on it.

She opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

The mansion.

Taken from inside the house.

On the back:

YOU SHOULD HAVE STAYED AWAY.

Daniel looked around.

“Someone is watching us.”

A light switched on upstairs.

Everyone froze.

Then another.

Then another.

One by one, the lights illuminated the staircase.

A man appeared at the top.

Tall.

Gray-haired.

Elegant.

He looked remarkably like Victor.

But older.

Calmer.

More dangerous.

Alexander Hale.

He smiled.

“Welcome home.”

Emily stared at him.

“You've been here the whole time.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Alexander slowly descended the stairs.

“Because this house belongs to me.”

Emily shook her head.

“No.”

She held up the trust documents.

“It belongs to me.”

Alexander smiled.

“That's what your father wanted you to believe.”

Thomas stepped forward.

“Alexander.”

Alexander looked at him.

“Brother.”

Thomas's expression hardened.

“You should have stayed gone.”

“I tried.”

“You murdered Anna.”

Alexander shook his head.

“No.”

He looked at Emily.

“Edward did.”

Thomas frowned.

“What?”

Alexander laughed softly.

“Edward always blamed me.”

Edward's voice suddenly came from the speakers.

“Because you deserved it.”

Everyone turned.

The television in the living room turned on.

Edward appeared on the screen.

But this time, he wasn't alone.

Victor stood beside him.

Emily's heart dropped.

Victor looked exhausted.

Blood covered one side of his shirt.

Edward spoke.

“Alexander.”

Alexander smiled.

“Edward.”

Victor stared at his brother.

“You betrayed me.”

Alexander looked at him.

“You were never my equal.”

Victor laughed bitterly.

“And you were?”

“No.”

Alexander looked at Emily.

“I was the man Edward feared.”

Emily frowned.

“Then why work with him?”

Alexander's smile disappeared.

“Because he had something I wanted.”

“What?”

“Revenge.”

He looked at Thomas.

“Your father destroyed my family.”

Thomas shook his head.

“Your family destroyed itself.”

Alexander's face hardened.

“You always believed you were better.”

“No.”

Thomas stepped forward.

“I believed Anna deserved to live.”

Alexander looked at Emily.

“And that's where everything began.”

He pointed toward the old photograph on the wall.

“My brother Victor wanted the company.”

“Edward wanted the trust.”

“And I wanted Thomas to suffer.”

Emily stared.

“So everyone used everyone.”

Alexander nodded.

“Exactly.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“And where does that leave me?”

Alexander looked at him.

“You were the most important piece.”

Daniel frowned.

“Why?”

“Because Jonathan knew the original trust.”

“And you were his son.”

Alexander smiled.

“Edward took you.”

“Thomas used you.”

“Victor controlled your debt.”

“And Emily loved you.”

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“And you?”

Alexander's expression became cold.

“I watched.”

Emily stepped between them.

“Enough.”

She held up the original trust.

“You've spent twenty years fighting over this.”

She tore the first page in half.

Everyone froze.

Thomas stared.

“Emily…”

She tore another.

Alexander's face changed.

“What are you doing?”

Emily dropped the pieces onto the floor.

“Ending it.”

She looked at Daniel.

“This trust was created to protect us.”

Then she looked at Victor.

“You can't have it.”

At Edward's image.

“Neither can you.”

At Alexander.

“And neither can you.”

Alexander pulled a gun.

Daniel moved in front of Emily.

Alexander smiled.

“Exactly like your father.”

Daniel froze.

“What?”

Alexander lowered the weapon.

“I don't need to shoot you.”

He pointed toward the ceiling.

A red light appeared.

Then another.

Then another.

“Because the entire house is wired.”

Emily looked around.

Alexander continued.

“Every conversation.”

“Every document.”

“Every confession.”

“Everything is recorded.”

Emily smiled.

“Good.”

Alexander frowned.

“What?”

She turned toward Daniel.

“Is it uploading?”

Daniel nodded.

“To the same server.”

Alexander's face changed.

“What server?”

Jonathan answered.

“Federal evidence.”

Alexander stared.

“You think that will save you?”

Emily smiled.

“No.”

She held up her phone.

“It already did.”

Police sirens erupted outside.

Alexander's expression collapsed.

Victor looked at Edward.

“You told me the police couldn't trace the system.”

Edward stared at him.

“I was wrong.”

Victor laughed.

“Of course you were.”

Then he turned toward Alexander.

“You promised me protection.”

Alexander raised his gun.

Victor stepped backward.

“Don't.”

Alexander fired.

The bullet struck Victor in the shoulder.

Victoria screamed.

Thomas pushed her behind him.

Richard charged.

He tackled Alexander.

The gun slid across the floor.

Emily grabbed it and kicked it away.

Daniel restrained Alexander.

Within seconds, police stormed the mansion.

“DROP YOUR WEAPONS!”

Everyone froze.

Edward's screen went black.

Victor collapsed.

Alexander was handcuffed.

Richard dropped to his knees.

Margaret began crying.

Emily stood in the center of the dining room.

The room where everything had begun.

A detective approached.

“Ms. Carter?”

“Yes.”

“We need your statement.”

Emily looked at the table.

Then at Daniel.

Then at Victoria.

She nodded.

“I have a lot to tell you.”

Hours later, the evidence was secured.

Edward Carter was arrested at a private estate.

Victor Hale was taken to the hospital under police custody.

Alexander was charged with conspiracy, fraud, and multiple counts connected to the Carter operation.

Margaret confessed.

Richard confessed.

Jonathan handed over everything.

Thomas finally stopped running.

But there was still one question.

Emily sat beside Daniel in the empty dining room.

“Are you still Daniel Carter?”

He looked at her.

“I don't know.”

Emily smiled faintly.

“Then choose.”

He looked confused.

“What?”

“You don't have to be Carter.”

“You don't have to be Reed.”

“You can be whoever you decide to be.”

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

“And you?”

Emily looked around the mansion.

“For the first time…”

She smiled.

“I get to decide too.”

Daniel took her hand.

No promises.

No contracts.

No Project 36.

Just two people.

May you like

Choosing each other freely.

For the first time.
