CHAPTER 5 — MY FATHER-IN-LAW’S FINAL WARNING

The phone call lasted less than thirty seconds.

But it changed the way I looked at everything.

Victoria Hale.

My father's daughter.

Margaret's daughter.

The woman whose existence had been erased from every family record I had ever seen.

I stood inside the underground vault with the phone still pressed against my ear long after the call had ended.

Nobody spoke.

Daniel looked as shocked as I felt.

Richard looked terrified.

Samuel looked almost resigned.

Finally, I lowered the phone.

“She knows about the vault.”

Richard nodded.

“She probably knows about everything.”

I looked at him.

“Then why did she call me?”

He didn't answer.

“Richard.”

“I don't know.”

“You're lying.”

He looked away.

I stepped toward him.

“You've spent ten years telling me you were protecting me. If you know something, tell me now.”

He remained silent.

Daniel suddenly spoke.

“Dad.”

Richard looked at his son.

“You need to tell her.”

“I know.”

“No.”

Daniel's voice hardened.

“You need to tell her everything.”

Richard stared at him.

For the first time, I saw something change between father and son.

Daniel wasn't afraid anymore.

He was angry.

Perhaps he was finally beginning to understand how much his silence had cost.

Richard walked toward the wall of files.

He touched my father's photograph.

“Thomas had a daughter before you.”

I stared at him.

“Victoria?”

“Yes.”

“But why was she registered as Hale?”

“Because Margaret wanted her hidden.”

“From my father?”

“No.”

He looked at me.

“From everyone.”

I frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Richard took a slow breath.

“Margaret had an affair with Victor Hale.”

My stomach dropped.

“What?”

“Before she married me.”

I stared at him.

“Then Victoria was Victor's daughter?”

Richard shook his head.

“No.”

He pointed toward the birth certificate.

“Thomas was the father.”

The room became silent.

I looked at the certificate again.

“Then why did she use Hale?”

“Because Victor agreed to hide the pregnancy.”

“Why?”

Richard looked at Daniel.

“Because Thomas was already married.”

I blinked.

“My father was married?”

Richard nodded.

“To your mother.”

The words hit me harder than I expected.

I knew my parents had struggled.

I knew their marriage had been complicated.

But I had never known there had been another woman.

Margaret.

I looked at Richard.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“And you still married her?”

“I didn't know everything.”

“But you knew about Victoria.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Margaret told me.”

“When?”

“Before our wedding.”

I couldn't understand.

“So your marriage was built on a secret.”

Richard gave a bitter smile.

“Almost every marriage in this family was.”

I looked at Daniel.

He flinched.

I suddenly remembered my wedding day.

Margaret had hugged me.

She had cried.

She had whispered,

“You're finally one of us.”

I had thought she meant it.

Now I wondered if she had been looking at me and seeing my father's daughter.

Not a daughter-in-law.

A threat.

“Why did my father leave the trust to me?”

Richard answered quietly.

“Because he didn't trust Victoria.”

“Why?”

“She had been raised by Victor.”

I frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“Victor taught her that your father stole everything from him.”

I stared.

“He lied to her?”

“Yes.”

“Did Victoria believe him?”

“For years.”

“And now?”

Richard looked at the phone.

“Now she may know the truth.”

I thought about her voice.

“You finally found the vault.”

She hadn't sounded angry.

She had sounded relieved.

Maybe she wasn't my enemy.

Maybe she was another victim.

Then a sound came from upstairs.

A door slammed.

We all froze.

Richard turned off his flashlight.

Everyone went silent.

Footsteps.

Someone was inside the warehouse.

Daniel whispered,

“Did anyone know we were coming?”

“No,” Richard said.

The footsteps came closer.

Slow.

Heavy.

Then stopped.

Samuel motioned toward the back wall.

We moved quietly.

A shadow passed beneath the vault door.

Someone was searching the building.

Then a voice echoed from above.

“Emily!”

My blood froze.

I knew that voice.

Margaret.

She had found us.

Richard looked at me.

“Stay here.”

“No.”

“Emily.”

“I need to hear what she has to say.”

Richard shook his head.

“You don't understand.”

“I understand enough.”

I opened the vault door.

Margaret stood at the top of the stairs.

She looked different.

The confidence was gone.

Her face was pale.

Her hands were trembling.

She stared at me.

Then at the documents.

Then at the birth certificate.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“You weren't supposed to find that.”

I stepped forward.

“Victoria is your daughter.”

Margaret closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

Daniel looked stunned.

“Mom…”

She looked at him.

“I was young.”

“You told me you couldn't have children before me.”

“I lied.”

Daniel's face collapsed.

“Why?”

“Because I was afraid.”

“Of what?”

“Your father.”

Richard stepped forward.

“Don't blame me for your choices.”

Margaret laughed bitterly.

“You always wanted to believe you were innocent.”

Richard stared at her.

“What did you do?”

“I protected my children.”

I shook my head.

“You protected yourself.”

Margaret looked at me.

“I loved Thomas.”

The confession seemed to silence everyone.

“You loved my father?”

“Yes.”

“And then you married Richard.”

“I was pregnant.”

Richard closed his eyes.

Margaret continued.

“Thomas promised he would leave his wife.”

I stared at her.

“He didn't.”

“No.”

“So you turned to Victor?”

“I had nowhere else to go.”

“What happened to Victoria?”

“Victor took her.”

“Why?”

“Because Thomas refused to acknowledge her publicly.”

My chest tightened.

“That's why she hates him.”

Margaret nodded.

“I told her he abandoned her.”

Daniel stared at his mother.

“You lied to her.”

Margaret looked at him.

“I was trying to keep her alive.”

“By making her hate her own father?”

“I didn't know what Victor would do.”

Richard's voice was cold.

“You knew exactly what he would do.”

Margaret turned.

“Don't.”

“You gave him access to Thomas.”

“I had no choice.”

“You always had a choice.”

Margaret looked at me.

Then she said something that made my blood run cold.

“Your father wasn't killed because of the land.”

I stepped closer.

“Then why?”

“Because of Victoria.”

I stopped.

“What?”

Margaret's voice broke.

“Thomas discovered that Victor had been using Victoria as leverage against him.”

“Leverage for what?”

“The trust.”

Richard looked shocked.

“What are you talking about?”

Margaret shook her head.

“Thomas wanted to leave everything to Emily.”

I looked at the documents.

Margaret continued.

“Victor wanted control of the trust.”

“So he threatened Victoria?”

“Yes.”

“And my father refused?”

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

Margaret's eyes filled with tears.

“Thomas tried to take Victoria away.”

I couldn't breathe.

“From Victor?”

“Yes.”

“And then?”

“He was killed.”

Silence.

I whispered,

“You knew.”

Margaret looked at me.

“I knew someone wanted him dead.”

“Did you know who?”

She shook her head.

“I suspected.”

“Who?”

She didn't answer.

I stepped toward her.

“Who killed my father?”

She whispered,

“Victor.”

Richard shook his head.

“Victor died.”

Margaret looked at him.

“No.”

Her eyes were full of fear.

“He didn't.”

I stared.

“But we found records saying he died.”

“Fake.”

“Who died?”

Margaret hesitated.

Then she whispered,

“His brother.”

The room went silent.

Victor Hale had never died.

Someone else had.

A body had been buried.

A grave had been created.

A death certificate had been issued.

And everyone had believed the lie.

Except Margaret.

I looked at her.

“Where is he?”

“I don't know.”

“You've spoken to him.”

She didn't answer.

“Margaret.”

“He contacted me three months ago.”

Richard's face hardened.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because he threatened Daniel.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“What did he threaten?”

Margaret looked at her son.

“He said if I spoke, you'd die.”

Daniel went pale.

I looked at him.

“Did you know?”

“No.”

I believed him.

Then something crashed upstairs.

Everyone looked toward the ceiling.

Margaret whispered,

“He's here.”

My heart stopped.

“Victor?”

She nodded.

“He followed me.”

Richard grabbed my arm.

“Emily, we're leaving.”

But before we could move, the lights in the vault went out.

Complete darkness.

A second later, the emergency lights came on.

Red.

Dim.

And on the wall—

someone had written a message.

It wasn't there before.

Three words.

ASK YOUR HUSBAND.

I slowly turned toward Daniel.

He stared at the message.

“I don't know what that means.”

I wanted to believe him.

Then my phone vibrated.

Another unknown number.

A photograph appeared.

It showed Daniel standing outside a hotel.

Beside him was Victoria.

The timestamp was two weeks earlier.

My blood ran cold.

I looked at my husband.

“Why were you meeting her?”

Daniel's face went white.

“I wasn't.”

The photograph showed his face clearly.

His voice shook.

“Emily, I swear—”

I raised my hand.

“Don't.”

I zoomed in.

Victoria was holding something.

A folder.

And on the folder was a name.

CARTER TRUST — PHASE TWO.

I looked at Richard.

“What is Phase Two?”

He didn't answer.

I turned toward Daniel.

“Did you know Victoria before today?”

He stared at me.

Then finally said,

“Yes.”

My heart shattered all over again.

“How long?”

“Six months.”

“Six months?”

“I didn't know who she was at first.”

“You met her six months ago?”

“Yes.”

“And you never told me.”

“She contacted me.”

“Why?”

Daniel looked at his father.

Richard whispered,

“Daniel…”

I stepped closer.

“Why?”

Daniel finally answered.

“She said she could prove my mother had been stealing from your father's trust.”

I froze.

“Then why didn't you tell me?”

“Because she asked me not to.”

I laughed bitterly.

“So you chose another woman's secret over your wife.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“I was trying to protect you.”

I stared at him.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

Then I looked at the photograph again.

Victoria wasn't smiling.

She was afraid.

Which meant she wasn't controlling Daniel.

She was warning him.

I looked at the message on the wall.

ASK YOUR HUSBAND.

Maybe the question wasn't why Daniel had met Victoria.

Maybe the question was what Victoria had told him.

I turned toward Daniel.

“What did she show you?”

His eyes filled with fear.

“She showed me a video.”

“What video?”

“Your father's last night alive.”

My breath stopped.

“You have it?”

Daniel nodded.

“On my phone.”

“Play it.”

He hesitated.

Then unlocked his phone.

The screen lit up.

A video appeared.

My father stood inside a parking garage.

He looked terrified.

A man approached him.

The video was blurry.

But the voice was clear.

Victor Hale.

“You should have listened.”

My father's voice trembled.

“You'll never get the trust.”

Victor laughed.

“I don't need the trust.”

He stepped closer.

“I only need Emily.”

The video ended.

I stared at the black screen.

My father hadn't died because of money.

He had died because someone wanted me.

And for the first time, I understood the terrifying truth.

May you like

I wasn't just the heir.

I was the key.
