CHAPTER 14 — THE ROOM UNDER ANNA'S HOUSE

The original Carter house stood on a hill outside the city.
It had been abandoned for almost two decades.
The windows were boarded.
The garden had disappeared beneath weeds.
The stone walls were covered with moss.
Emily stared at it from the car.
“This is where my mother died?”
Thomas nodded.
“Yes.”
Victoria sat beside her.
Neither woman spoke.
Daniel parked near the rear entrance.
Richard arrived several minutes later in another vehicle.
Victor was nowhere in sight.
That worried Emily.
“Where is he?”
Thomas looked toward the road.
“Following us.”
Daniel locked the doors.
“Then we don't have much time.”
Thomas opened the rear door.
“Stay close.”
They entered the house.
The smell of dust and damp wood filled the hallway.
Emily walked slowly.
Every step felt strangely familiar.
She couldn't explain it.
Then she saw something on the wall.
A small pencil drawing.
A house.
A tree.
Two children holding hands.
Emily touched it.
“I remember this.”
Victoria looked at her.
“You do?”
Emily shook her head.
“Not exactly.”
Thomas stared at the drawing.
“You were four.”
Emily turned.
“What?”
“You visited this house once.”
“Why don't I remember?”
Thomas's voice softened.
“Because I took you away that night.”
Victoria looked confused.
“Why?”
Thomas looked at her.
“Because Victor came.”
They continued through the house.
At the end of the hallway was a locked wooden door.
Thomas stopped.
Emily recognized the lock.
It had the same shape as the black key.
She pulled the key from her pocket.
Daniel stared.
“You still have it?”
Emily nodded.
She inserted the key.
Click.
The door opened.
Inside was a small room.
Almost empty.
A desk.
A chair.
An old tape recorder.
And a mirror.
Emily stepped inside.
Thomas stopped at the doorway.
He couldn't go farther.
Emily looked at him.
“Why?”
Thomas whispered—
“Because Anna died here.”
Emily walked toward the desk.
There was a cassette tape.
A handwritten label read:
FOR MY DAUGHTER.
Emily picked it up.
Her hands trembled.
Victoria stood beside her.
“Play it.”
Daniel found batteries in the drawer.
The recorder clicked.
Static filled the room.
Then—
A woman's voice.
Soft.
Weak.
But clear.
Emily stopped breathing.
“Emily…”
She covered her mouth.
Her mother.
Anna.
Alive.
Speaking directly to her.
“If you're hearing this, then my brother failed to keep you hidden.”
Thomas closed his eyes.
Anna continued.
“I don't know how old you are.”
A pause.
“But I know you are alive.”
Emily began crying silently.
Anna's voice continued.
“I need you to know one thing.”
“I never abandoned you.”
Emily whispered—
“Mom.”
Victoria reached for her hand.
Anna continued.
“Your father will tell you that he tried to protect you.”
Emily looked at Thomas.
“He did.”
Thomas's eyes filled with tears.
“But there is a truth he doesn't know.”
Thomas opened his eyes.
Anna continued.
“The man who ordered my death was not Victor Hale.”
Emily froze.
Victor wasn't the mastermind.
Anna continued.
“It was Edward.”
Thomas stepped backward.
“No.”
The recording continued.
“Edward Carter.”
“He believed the company belonged to him.”
“He believed blood made him king.”
“He wanted your father dead.”
“He wanted my daughter.”
“He wanted the trust.”
Emily stared at Thomas.
“Dad…”
Thomas looked devastated.
Anna's voice continued.
“But Edward isn't the only one.”
A long silence.
“He has someone inside the family.”
Emily's blood went cold.
“Someone I trusted.”
Thomas whispered—
“No.”
Anna continued.
“Someone who will eventually marry my daughter.”
Daniel went completely still.
Emily turned toward him.
Daniel stared at the recorder.
Anna's voice continued.
“His name is Daniel.”
The room became silent.
Emily couldn't breathe.
Daniel's face drained of color.
Thomas stepped toward him.
“That's impossible.”
Anna continued.
“I don't know if he will know the truth.”
“But Edward will use him.”
“He will place Daniel near Emily.”
“He will make him dependent.”
“He will make him afraid.”
Emily's eyes filled with tears.
Daniel whispered—
“I didn't know.”
Anna continued.
“And if Daniel truly loves my daughter…”
A pause.
“…he will eventually betray Edward.”
The recording stopped.
Nobody moved.
Then Daniel whispered—
“She knew.”
Emily stared at him.
“She knew about you.”
Thomas looked at Daniel.
“Anna died before you were born.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
He pointed toward the recorder.
“She said my name.”
Thomas looked confused.
Emily suddenly understood.
“Daniel…”
She looked at the date on the cassette.
December 2006.
Daniel hadn't been born yet.
He was born two years later.
Emily turned toward Thomas.
“Then how could she know his name?”
Thomas's face went completely pale.
He walked toward the desk.
There was a second envelope.
He opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
A young Edward.
Standing beside a woman.
And a little boy.
Emily looked closer.
The boy was approximately five years old.
Thomas whispered—
“That's Daniel.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“No.”
Emily stared at the photograph.
Daniel's face.
Same eyes.
Same scar above his eyebrow.
Same child.
But the date on the back was impossible.
Daniel hadn't been born until 2001.
Daniel shook his head.
“That isn't me.”
Thomas looked at him.
“No.”
He turned the photograph over.
The name written on the back was:
DANIEL REED.
Jonathan Reed.
Emily's heart stopped.
“Jonathan?”
Thomas nodded slowly.
“Daniel Reed was Jonathan's son.”
Daniel stared at the photograph.
“My father?”
“Yes.”
Thomas looked at Emily.
“Jonathan had another child.”
Emily's voice trembled.
“Who?”
Thomas swallowed.
“Daniel Carter.”
Daniel looked confused.
“What are you saying?”
Thomas stared at him.
“You weren't born a Carter.”
Silence.
“Your identity was changed.”
Daniel's face went white.
“Why?”
Thomas looked toward the door.
“Because Edward needed a boy he could control.”
Emily felt a terrible realization forming.
Project 36 wasn't simply about placing Daniel into her life.
Daniel himself had been created inside the conspiracy.
His debt.
His identity.
His connection to Jonathan.
Everything.
The entire marriage.
Emily looked at Daniel.
“Were you ever really Daniel Carter?”
Daniel's eyes filled with tears.
“I don't know.”
A gunshot shattered the window.
Glass exploded across the room.
Daniel pushed Emily to the floor.
Thomas pulled Victoria behind the desk.
Richard returned fire through the broken window.
Then a voice came from outside.
Victor.
“Thomas!”
Thomas froze.
Victor shouted again.
“Give me the recording!”
Thomas looked at Emily.
“No.”
Victor laughed.
“You still don't understand.”
Another shot struck the wall.
“You don't have to give it to me.”
Emily looked at the recorder.
Victor continued—
“Because Edward already has the original.”
Emily froze.
“The original?”
Victor laughed.
“The cassette you found is a copy.”
Thomas's face changed.
Emily stared at the desk.
Then at the mirror.
Something was wrong.
The mirror.
She walked toward it.
There was a tiny crack in the bottom corner.
Emily touched it.
The mirror moved.
Behind it was a hidden compartment.
Inside—
A black velvet box.
Emily opened it.
Her wedding ring lay inside.
But underneath the ring was a second object.
A tiny blood-red key.
And a note.
Emily unfolded it.
Only six words were written.
TRUST THE MAN WHO WAS ERASED.
Emily looked at Daniel.
He stared back.
Then someone behind them whispered—
“Emily.”
She turned.
Richard was holding another photograph.
His hands were shaking.
“I know who that man is.”
Emily looked at him.
“Who?”
Richard's voice broke.
“The man Edward erased.”
He looked at Daniel.
“Your real father.”
Daniel stopped breathing.
Richard whispered—
“Jonathan Reed.”
Outside, Victor shouted again.
But this time, nobody answered.
Because the biggest secret had just changed.
Daniel wasn't the man Emily thought she married.
He was the son of the man who had spent twenty years protecting her father's secrets.
May you like
And somewhere outside the house—
Edward Carter was coming for both of them.
