CHAPTER 12 — THE VOICE BEHIND THE VOICE

Nobody moved.
The phone remained in Victor's hand.
The distorted voice was gone.
But its final sentence remained in Emily's mind.
Now she knows who really betrayed Thomas.
Richard looked terrified.
Not guilty.
Terrified.
Emily noticed the difference.
“Who was that?”
Richard shook his head.
“I don't know.”
Victor stared at him.
“You expect me to believe that?”
Richard looked at Victor.
“I swear.”
Victor suddenly grabbed Richard by the collar.
“You're lying.”
Thomas stepped forward.
“Let him go.”
Victor shoved Richard away.
Richard stumbled.
Emily caught him.
For a moment, their eyes met.
The man she had once trusted as a father-in-law looked completely broken.
“I tried to protect you,” Richard whispered.
Emily answered coldly.
“You betrayed my father.”
“I did.”
“And you took $31 million.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Richard's eyes filled with tears.
“Because I thought I was buying Daniel's life.”
Emily froze.
“What?”
Richard looked at Daniel.
“Victor threatened to kill him.”
Daniel stared.
“When?”
“Seven years ago.”
Daniel's face went pale.
Richard continued.
“Victor had photographs of you.”
Daniel swallowed.
“What photographs?”
“You with Victoria.”
Emily looked at Daniel.
Victoria stepped forward.
“That wasn't seven years ago.”
Richard shook his head.
“No.”
He looked at Emily.
“Those photographs were taken six months ago.”
Emily's eyes narrowed.
“So why did you say seven years?”
Richard stared at her.
“I didn't.”
Silence.
Emily slowly looked around the room.
Everyone was confused.
Then Thomas spoke.
“Because someone altered the recording.”
Daniel looked at the screens.
“The video.”
Thomas nodded.
“Victor's been showing us pieces.”
He looked at Victor.
“Not the whole truth.”
Victor's expression remained unreadable.
Thomas continued.
“Someone else has access to the system.”
Victor suddenly looked toward the ceiling.
“Impossible.”
A small red light blinked.
Then another.
Then another.
The entire hangar was filled with hidden cameras.
Emily whispered—
“Someone is watching us.”
A speaker crackled overhead.
Then a man's voice spoke.
Calm.
Old.
Familiar.
“Hello, Thomas.”
Thomas went rigid.
His face turned white.
Emily looked at him.
“Dad?”
Thomas whispered—
“No.”
The voice continued.
“You should have stayed dead.”
Victor looked genuinely shocked.
“You.”
The voice laughed.
“You finally understand.”
Emily looked at Victor.
“You know him.”
Victor's expression had changed completely.
For the first time, Emily saw fear in his eyes.
“Who is it?”
Victor didn't answer.
The voice spoke again.
“Tell her.”
Victor remained silent.
The speaker crackled.
“Or I will.”
Emily looked up.
“Tell me.”
Victor slowly lowered his head.
“The man behind the Carter empire.”
Emily frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Thomas answered.
“My father.”
Emily's eyes widened.
“Your father?”
Thomas nodded.
“Your grandfather.”
Silence.
Emily felt dizzy.
“I thought he died before I was born.”
“He was supposed to.”
The voice laughed.
“Thomas always was sentimental.”
Thomas stepped forward.
“You killed Anna.”
“No.”
The voice became colder.
“You killed Anna.”
Thomas froze.
Emily stared at her father.
“What?”
The voice continued.
“You brought Anna into the war.”
Thomas shook his head.
“I tried to save her.”
“You used her.”
“No.”
“You used her to hide Emily.”
Thomas's face twisted with pain.
“You don't know what happened.”
“I know everything.”
A door opened somewhere above them.
Everyone looked up.
A figure appeared behind the glass of the observation room.
An elderly man.
White hair.
Black suit.
He stood completely still.
Emily couldn't see his face clearly.
Then the lights brightened.
She saw him.
Thomas's father.
Her grandfather.
Edward Carter.
Alive.
Emily whispered—
“Grandfather?”
Thomas looked devastated.
“Edward.”
Victor stepped backward.
“No.”
Edward smiled.
“Victor.”
Victor's hand moved toward his weapon.
Three laser sights immediately appeared on his chest.
He stopped.
Edward looked at Emily.
“You have your mother's eyes.”
Emily's voice shook.
“You knew me?”
“Since the day you were born.”
“Then why did you let me believe everyone was dead?”
Edward smiled.
“Because dead people are difficult to find.”
Emily stared at him.
“You're the one who made me disappear.”
“No.”
He paused.
“I made the world believe you disappeared.”
Thomas stepped forward.
“You promised to protect her.”
“I did.”
“You manipulated everything.”
“I controlled variables.”
Thomas's voice hardened.
“She was my daughter.”
“She was the heir.”
Emily stepped forward.
“I am standing right here.”
Edward looked at her.
“Yes.”
“And I am not an heir to you.”
His smile faded.
“I disagree.”
Emily felt a chill.
“What do you want?”
Edward answered immediately.
“The Carter bloodline.”
“I don't care about the company.”
“I know.”
“Then what?”
“The trust.”
Emily's eyes narrowed.
“Victor wanted the trust too.”
Victor laughed bitterly.
“He works for Edward.”
Emily looked at him.
Victor said—
“I always thought I was building an empire.”
Edward smiled.
“You were building mine.”
Emily looked at Thomas.
“Is this why you disappeared?”
Thomas nodded.
“I was trying to escape my father.”
“And Victor?”
Thomas looked at Victor.
“Victor was originally Edward's lieutenant.”
Victor's jaw tightened.
“Originally.”
Edward smiled.
“Victor became ambitious.”
Victor looked up.
“You promised me control.”
“I promised you survival.”
“You promised Carter Holdings.”
“I promised you whatever kept you obedient.”
Victor's face twisted with rage.
“You used me.”
Edward shrugged.
“You used everyone.”
Emily suddenly understood.
Richard.
Margaret.
Victor.
Daniel.
Even Thomas.
They were all pieces.
Different pieces.
One board.
One game.
One player.
Her grandfather.
But then Emily remembered something.
The microchip.
She pulled it from her pocket.
Edward's eyes immediately focused on it.
His expression changed.
Emily noticed.
“You're afraid of this.”
Edward said nothing.
She smiled.
“Why?”
Thomas stared at the chip.
Then at Edward.
“What is on it?”
Edward answered—
“Nothing.”
Emily held it up.
“Then why are you afraid?”
Edward's silence was enough.
Emily turned to Daniel.
“Connect it.”
Daniel understood.
He took out his laptop.
Victor shouted—
“Don't!”
Daniel plugged in the chip.
The screen filled with files.
Bank transfers.
Encrypted messages.
Photographs.
Contracts.
Dozens of names.
Emily scrolled.
Then stopped.
Her heart nearly stopped.
There was a file titled:
PROJECT 36 — ORIGINAL DIRECTIVE.
She opened it.
The document appeared.
Not Thomas's signature.
Not Victor's.
Not Richard's.
Edward Carter.
Emily read the first line.
“SUBJECT: EMILY CARTER.”
Second line.
“SECONDARY SUBJECT: DANIEL CARTER.”
Third line.
“PURPOSE: RECONSTRUCT TRUST CONTROL.”
Emily's hands began shaking.
Then she saw the next section.
“VICTOR HALE WILL SERVE AS PRIMARY ENFORCEMENT.”
Another line.
“RICHARD CARTER WILL PROVIDE ACCESS.”
Another.
“MARGARET CARTER WILL MAINTAIN INTERNAL PRESSURE.”
Then—
“DANIEL CARTER WILL BE PLACED INTO EMILY'S LIFE.”
Emily stopped.
Daniel stared at the screen.
But there was one final line.
“EMILY MUST NEVER LEARN THAT HER FATHER IS ALIVE.”
Thomas closed his eyes.
Emily turned toward him.
“You knew.”
Thomas shook his head.
“I knew there was a plan.”
“You knew Project 36 existed.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Daniel was involved.”
“Yes.”
“But you didn't know Edward created it.”
“No.”
Emily looked at Edward.
“Why me?”
Edward finally answered.
“Because your mother hid the final key.”
“What key?”
“The key to the original Carter Trust.”
Emily frowned.
“I already control the trust.”
“No.”
Edward smiled.
“You control the public trust.”
He pointed toward the screen.
“The real trust is somewhere else.”
Thomas suddenly understood.
“No…”
Edward looked at Emily.
“Your mother didn't die without leaving a message.”
Emily's breath caught.
“Where?”
Edward smiled.
“In the one place Victor never thought to search.”
Emily looked at Thomas.
“Where?”
Thomas's eyes filled with tears.
“Anna's grave.”
Edward shook his head.
“No.”
He looked directly at Emily.
“The message is inside your wedding ring.”
Emily froze.
Her wedding ring.
The ring she had removed on Christmas night.
The ring sitting somewhere in the mansion.
Daniel stared at her.
“What did my mother put inside it?”
Edward smiled.
“Not your mother.”
He looked at Thomas.
“Your father.”
Emily's face went pale.
Thomas whispered—
“I never gave you that ring.”
Emily turned toward him.
“What?”
Thomas shook his head.
“I didn't.”
Daniel looked at Emily.
“Then who did?”
Nobody answered.
Because suddenly the answer was obvious.
Margaret.
Her mother-in-law.
The woman who had slapped her on Christmas night.
The woman who had spent years humiliating her.
The woman who had insisted Emily didn't belong in the Carter family.
Margaret hadn't wanted Emily out.
She had wanted Emily's ring.
Emily looked at the screen.
Then at Thomas.
Then at Daniel.
Her voice was barely audible.
“Christmas night wasn't the beginning.”
Thomas shook his head.
“No.”
Emily closed her fingers around the microchip.
“It was the moment they knew I had found the truth.”
Above them, Edward smiled.
And for the first time—
Emily realized the slap hadn't been an act of rage.
It had been a signal.
May you like
A signal that told someone watching from the shadows—
Emily Carter knows.
