CHAPTER 18 — THE BILLION-DOLLAR TRUTH

The tunnel shook again.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

Jonathan grabbed the original trust documents.

“We don't have much time.”

Daniel looked at him.

“Where's the vault?”

Jonathan pointed deeper into the cemetery.

“Under the chapel.”

Emily frowned.

“The chapel?”

“Yes.”

Thomas stared at Jonathan.

“You found it.”

“I found the entrance.”

“You never opened it.”

Jonathan shook his head.

“I didn't have the second key.”

Emily held up the red key.

“And now we do.”

They moved through the tunnel.

The passage ended beneath an old stone chapel.

Jonathan pressed a hidden switch.

A section of the floor opened.

A staircase descended.

Emily looked down.

“This place is enormous.”

Jonathan nodded.

“It was built before Carter Holdings existed.”

Daniel looked at Thomas.

“Who built it?”

Thomas answered—

“Anna's grandfather.”

Emily looked confused.

“Why?”

“To protect the family from exactly what is happening now.”

They descended.

At the bottom stood a massive steel door.

Two biometric scanners were built into the wall.

One for Emily.

One for Daniel.

Emily placed her hand against the first.

The scanner turned green.

Daniel placed his hand against the second.

Green.

The door unlocked.

Slowly.

Inside was a room unlike anything Emily had seen before.

No gold.

No jewels.

No luxury.

Just records.

Thousands of them.

Every transaction.

Every company.

Every account.

Every secret.

At the center was a glass table.

On it sat one envelope.

Emily opened it.

The first document was the original Carter Trust.

She read.

Then read again.

Her voice shook.

“Joint control.”

Jonathan nodded.

“Emily and Daniel.”

She looked at him.

“Equal authority.”

“Yes.”

“Neither can sell.”

“Yes.”

“Neither can transfer.”

“Yes.”

“Neither can be removed without the other's consent.”

“Yes.”

Emily looked at Daniel.

“That's why Victor needed us.”

Jonathan nodded.

“Exactly.”

“He needed one of us dead.”

“Yes.”

“So the other could be manipulated.”

“Yes.”

Daniel looked at the documents.

“But there's something else.”

He pointed to a paragraph.

“Read that.”

Emily did.

Her eyes widened.

“If either beneficiary is forced, threatened, coerced, or deceived into surrendering control…”

She stopped.

Jonathan finished—

“The entire trust automatically transfers into a protected legal structure.”

Emily looked up.

“Which means?”

“No one gets it.”

“Not Victor.”

“Not Edward.”

“Not the Carter family.”

“Not even you.”

Emily stared at the document.

“So the trust was designed to survive us.”

Jonathan nodded.

“Your mother built it that way.”

Emily whispered—

“She was planning for everything.”

Thomas looked down.

“She always did.”

Emily turned another page.

Then froze.

“Dad.”

Thomas looked at her.

“This document is signed by you.”

Thomas nodded.

“And Mom.”

“Yes.”

“But the date…”

Emily stared.

“Three months before she died.”

Thomas nodded.

“She knew.”

“She knew she was going to die.”

“Yes.”

Emily's voice broke.

“Why didn't she run?”

Thomas looked away.

“Because Edward threatened Victoria.”

Emily looked toward her sister.

Victoria was standing near the door.

Her face had gone pale.

“He threatened me?”

Thomas nodded.

“He said if Anna disappeared, he would kill you.”

Victoria whispered—

“So she stayed.”

“Yes.”

Emily closed her eyes.

Her mother had sacrificed herself.

Not because she was weak.

Because she was protecting her children.

A sound came from the vault entrance.

Everyone turned.

Richard raised his weapon.

But it wasn't Edward.

It was Margaret.

She stepped inside.

Emily stared.

“How did you get here?”

Margaret looked at the floor.

“I know another entrance.”

Thomas stared at her.

“You've been here before.”

Margaret nodded.

“When?”

“Twenty years ago.”

Emily's heart sank.

Margaret walked toward the table.

“I helped Anna hide the first documents.”

Thomas stared.

“You knew about the trust.”

“Yes.”

“You knew about the second vault.”

“Yes.”

“And you still worked with Edward.”

Margaret began crying.

“I didn't have a choice.”

Thomas's expression hardened.

“You always say that.”

Margaret looked at him.

“Because it's true.”

She turned toward Emily.

“Edward had Victoria.”

Victoria froze.

“What?”

Margaret nodded.

“He took her when she was six.”

Victoria's eyes filled with tears.

“I don't remember.”

“Because he drugged you.”

Thomas stepped forward.

“You let him.”

Margaret shook her head.

“I tried to get her back.”

“You failed.”

“Yes.”

She looked at Victoria.

“And I have regretted it every day.”

Emily's anger softened slightly.

But then Margaret said—

“There is something else.”

“What?”

Margaret looked at Daniel.

“Edward didn't choose you because of your debt.”

Daniel frowned.

“He chose you because of your father.”

Jonathan stepped forward.

“What are you talking about?”

Margaret looked at him.

“Edward knew you had hidden the original trust.”

Jonathan froze.

“And he knew you had a son.”

Daniel stared.

“So he took me.”

“Yes.”

“But why wait twenty years?”

Margaret whispered—

“Because the trust couldn't activate until Emily turned thirty-six.”

Emily felt cold.

Her birthday.

The account.

The transfer.

Everything.

Project 36 wasn't named after the project.

It was named after her age.

Thirty-six.

Margaret continued.

“Edward needed Daniel to marry Emily before her thirty-sixth birthday.”

Emily looked at Daniel.

“Because then the joint trust would activate.”

Jonathan nodded.

“But Edward made one mistake.”

Daniel looked at him.

“What?”

Jonathan smiled.

“He assumed Daniel would remain loyal to him.”

Daniel looked toward Emily.

“He was wrong.”

Suddenly, a loud voice came through the vault speakers.

Edward.

“You're all very sentimental.”

Everyone froze.

Edward's voice continued.

“But you're still missing the most important piece.”

Emily looked around.

“What piece?”

Edward laughed.

“The founder.”

Thomas looked at the speakers.

“What are you talking about?”

Edward answered—

“Who do you think originally funded Carter Holdings?”

Thomas's face changed.

Emily looked at him.

“Dad?”

Thomas said nothing.

Edward continued.

“Not me.”

“Not Anna.”

“And certainly not Thomas.”

Emily's heart began pounding.

Edward said—

“The first Carter fortune came from a man whose name was erased from every public record.”

Jonathan whispered—

“No.”

Edward laughed.

“Yes.”

Emily looked at him.

“Who?”

The speakers crackled.

Then Edward said—

“Your great-grandfather.”

Emily frowned.

“That doesn't make sense.”

Edward continued.

“He wasn't a businessman.”

“He was an intelligence operative.”

Thomas's face went pale.

“He built the fortune through classified operations.”

Emily stared.

“What does that have to do with Victor?”

Edward answered—

“Everything.”

A file appeared on the vault screen.

Emily opened it.

The first photograph showed her great-grandfather.

The second showed a younger Edward.

The third showed Victor.

Then—

A fourth photograph.

A man standing beside Victor.

Emily stared.

She knew that face.

She had seen it in Thomas's old photographs.

Her voice became barely audible.

“That's…”

Thomas finished the sentence.

“My brother.”

Emily looked at him.

“Your brother?”

Thomas nodded.

“The man everyone believed died with Victor.”

Jonathan's face went white.

“No.”

Emily stared at the screen.

The name beneath the photograph appeared.

ALEXANDER HALE.

Then another file opened.

STATUS: ALIVE.

Emily stepped backward.

Victor had a brother.

Edward had been working with him.

And Alexander Hale had been missing for twenty years.

But the final line was worse.

CURRENT LOCATION: CARTER MANSION.

Emily's blood froze.

“The mansion.”

Daniel looked at her.

“The house is mine.”

Jonathan shook his head.

“No.”

He looked terrified.

“The house isn't empty.”

Emily whispered—

“Then who is inside?”

Jonathan answered—

“Alexander.”

At that exact moment, Emily's phone rang.

The caller ID showed her own number.

She answered.

A man's voice whispered—

“Come home, Emily.”

She froze.

Then the voice said—

“Your grandfather is not the man you should be afraid of.”

The call ended.

Emily looked at Thomas.

“What do we do?”

Thomas stared at the vault door.

“We go home.”

Emily shook her head.

“No.”

She picked up the original trust.

“We take the fight to him.”

Daniel stepped beside her.

“For once…”

He looked at Emily.

“…we don't run.”

Emily nodded.

Behind them, Jonathan smiled faintly.

“Now you sound like your mother.”

And for the first time since Christmas night—

May you like

Emily wasn't afraid of what was waiting at home.

She was ready to meet it.
