CHAPTER 10 — THE DAUGHTER WHO INHERITED A WAR

The words on the screen refused to disappear.
GUARDIAN IDENTITY CONFIRMED.
MARA KINGSLEY IS THE ORIGINAL BLUEBIRD HOLDER.
I stared at the message.
Again.
And again.
Waiting for it to change.
Waiting for the system to correct itself.
Waiting for someone to laugh and tell me this had all been an elaborate misunderstanding.
But nothing happened.
The computer remained silent.
The golden falcon symbol continued glowing.
And for the first time in my life…
I realized my father had not left me an inheritance.
He had left me a battlefield.
I slowly turned toward everyone in the room.
Grant.
Diane.
Richard.
They were all watching me differently now.
Not like a wife.
Not like a daughter-in-law.
Not like a mother.
Like someone who had just become dangerous.
“Explain.”
My voice was calm.
But inside, everything was breaking.
Richard stepped closer.
“That is what your father wanted.”
I looked at him.
“No.”
My voice sharpened.
“What my father wanted was for me to know the truth.”
I pointed toward the screen.
“He spent years hiding this from me.”
Richard smiled.
“Because knowing the truth would have gotten you killed.”
I hated that part of me believed him.
Because tonight had proven one thing.
People were willing to destroy everything to control what my father left behind.
My marriage.
My family.
My daughter.
Everything.
“Why me?”
I asked.
Diane looked away.
Grant remained silent.
Richard answered.
“Because Bluebird was never about money.”
I looked at the computer.
“Then what is it about?”
Richard walked toward the screen.
“It is about authority.”
“Over what?”
“The Kingsley network.”
I frowned.
“The company?”
“No.”
His voice became serious.
“Something much bigger.”
The room became quiet.
Richard continued.
“Your father built relationships with governments, corporations, private institutions, and families around the world.”
I listened carefully.
“The Kingsley empire was only the public face.”
My stomach tightened.
“Then what was the private face?”
Richard looked at me.
“Influence.”
The word felt heavier than money.
Because money could be stolen.
Companies could collapse.
But influence…
Influence could change everything.
“Bluebird is a control system?”
“No.”
Richard shook his head.
“It is a protection system.”
“Protection for who?”
He looked directly at me.
“You.”
I laughed quietly.
A broken laugh.
“Everyone keeps saying they protected me.”
I looked around the room.
“But everyone lied to me.”
Nobody spoke.
Because they knew I was right.
My father.
Grant.
Diane.
Everyone had decided the truth was too dangerous for me.
Nobody asked whether living a lie was worse.
I looked at Grant.
“Did you know I was Bluebird?”
He shook his head.
“No.”
“Did my father?”
“Yes.”
“And you never told me?”
“No.”
“Why?”
Grant swallowed.
“Because I was ordered not to.”
I stared.
“You always have an excuse.”
The words hurt him.
I saw it.
But I didn't stop.
“First it was my father.”
“Then it was protecting me.”
“Then it was love.”
My voice broke slightly.
“But every person who betrayed me had a reason.”
Grant looked down.
Because he knew he had become one of them.
A loud noise came from outside.
Everyone turned.
Daniel.
He was still outside.
Still waiting.
Vanessa beside him.
Richard moved toward the monitor.
“They are coming in.”
I looked at him.
“You sound worried.”
“I am.”
That surprised me.
Richard Vale admitting fear was something I never expected.
“Why?”
He looked at me.
“Because Daniel doesn't want Bluebird.”
“Then what does he want?”
Richard answered:
“Revenge.”
The screen changed.
The camera showed Daniel entering the front gate.
Vanessa followed him.
But something was wrong.
She wasn't walking freely.
Daniel had a hand on her arm.
He was controlling her.
My stomach tightened.
“She isn't helping him.”
Grant noticed too.
“She is trapped.”
For the first time, Grant and I saw the same thing.
Vanessa was not the mastermind.
She was another victim.
Another person manipulated by someone more powerful.
The front door opened.
Daniel walked inside.
Two armed men followed.
Vanessa entered behind him.
Her face was pale.
“Mara.”
She looked at me.
Her eyes were full of fear.
Not guilt.
Fear.
Daniel smiled.
“Family reunion.”
Nobody answered.
He looked around the room.
“So many secrets.”
His eyes stopped on me.
“And finally…”
He smiled.
“The rightful guardian.”
I stepped forward.
“What do you want?”
Daniel looked surprised.
“You sound like your father.”
“I asked what you want.”
He laughed softly.
“Always direct.”
Then he looked at Ellie.
My entire body reacted.
I moved instantly.
Standing between him and my daughter.
Daniel noticed.
“Protective.”
“She is not yours to take.”
He smiled.
“You still don't understand.”
“I understand enough.”
“No.”
His expression changed.
“You understand nothing.”
He walked closer.
“Your father spent his entire life preparing you for this moment.”
I stared.
“For what?”
“For war.”
The word echoed.
“What war?”
Daniel looked around the room.
“At all of us.”
Nobody spoke.
Then he pointed at Richard.
“Ask him why your father never trusted him.”
Richard's face darkened.
“Don't.”
Daniel smiled.
“Ask Diane why she helped hide Amelia.”
Diane looked away.
“Ask Grant why your father never allowed him to leave.”
My heart tightened.
“Leave?”
Daniel looked at Grant.
“You thought you were protecting her?”
He laughed.
“You were a prisoner too.”
I looked at Grant.
His expression told me Daniel was telling the truth.
“What does he mean?”
Grant didn't answer.
Daniel continued.
“Your father owned every part of Grant's life.”
“That is a lie.”
“Is it?”
Daniel looked at Grant.
“Tell her.”
Grant closed his eyes.
Then whispered:
“My father’s death wasn't an accident.”
Silence.
Everyone froze.
Daniel smiled.
“Now we're getting somewhere.”
Grant continued.
“Your father discovered my father had evidence against Richard.”
My mind raced.
“And?”
“My father was killed.”
“By who?”
Grant looked at Daniel.
Daniel's smile disappeared.
Because the answer was clear.
The room became silent.
Then Daniel spoke.
“You want the truth?”
He stepped closer.
“Fine.”
He pointed at me.
“Your father knew everything.”
I froze.
“What?”
“He knew my father was investigating corruption.”
Daniel's voice became louder.
“He knew people were being threatened.”
“He knew people were dying.”
“And he still chose power.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
Daniel laughed.
“You still believe he was perfect.”
The words hurt.
Because I didn't know anymore.
I had spent my entire life believing my father was a hero.
But every person in this room carried a different version of him.
Hero.
Manipulator.
Protector.
Prisoner.
I didn't know which one was real.
Daniel reached into his coat.
He pulled out a small drive.
“Everything is on here.”
Nobody moved.
“The original Bluebird file.”
My heart raced.
“Why give it to me?”
Daniel smiled.
“Because when you see what your father did…”
He looked at Grant.
“Everyone loses.”
The drive landed on the table.
Then Daniel walked backward.
His men followed.
Vanessa stayed behind.
I looked at her.
“Why?”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because my father is right about one thing.”
“What?”
She looked at Ellie.
“Your father hid something from you.”
A pause.
“But he also hid something from himself.”
I frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Vanessa looked terrified.
Then she whispered:
“Bluebird wasn't created after your father's biggest mistake.”
She swallowed.
“It was created because your father knew he was about to make one.”
The room went silent.
I picked up the drive.
My hand shook.
Because I knew whatever was inside would change everything.
I inserted it into the computer.
The screen asked for authorization.
I placed my hand on the scanner.
The system opened.
One file appeared.
Only one.
The title:
PROJECT BLUEBIRD — ORIGINAL PURPOSE
I clicked.
A video loaded.
My father's face appeared again.
But this time…
He wasn't old.
He wasn't afraid.
He looked younger.
And beside him…
Was another person.
Someone I recognized.
Someone who shouldn't have been there.
Someone who changed everything.
The person sitting beside my father in the recording was…
Grant Mercer.
But the date on the video was impossible.
Because it was recorded…
Twelve years before Grant and I ever met.
I looked at my husband.
He looked at the screen.
And for the first time…
I saw the same fear in his eyes that I felt.
Because neither of us understood the truth.
How could Grant have been part of my father's plan…
Before he was even supposed to exist in my life?
The video began playing.
My father's first words were:
“Grant, if Mara ever discovers this file…”
He paused.
“Everything we built will collapse.”
The screen went black.
And the final message appeared:
PROJECT BLUEBIRD PHASE TWO HAS BEGUN.
I looked at Ellie.
Then at Grant.
Then at the people around me.
May you like
And I realized the war my father prepared me for…
Had only just started.
