CHAPTER 13 — THE SISTER WHO WAS ERASED

For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
The woman standing in front of me was impossible.
Not because she looked unfamiliar.
Because she looked familiar in a way I could not explain.
Her eyes.
The shape of her face.
The way she held herself.
There was something about her that felt like a memory buried too deep to reach.
But her words destroyed everything.
I am your sister.
I stared at her.
Then at the photograph in my hand.
Two little girls.
One was me.
I recognized the dress.
The small necklace around my neck.
The nervous smile I always had in old childhood pictures.
But the other girl…
The other girl was holding my hand.
Standing beside me like she had always belonged there.
Like she had always been part of my life.
“Who are you?”
My voice barely came out.
The woman looked at me with tears in her eyes.
“My name is Amelia.”
The name.
The same name Richard had mentioned.
The same name connected to Bluebird.
The same name that belonged to my father's first daughter.
“No.”
I stepped back.
“That’s impossible.”
She nodded slowly.
“I know.”
“Amelia is dead.”
“That is what they wanted you to believe.”
My heart tightened.
Another death.
Another lie.
Another person everyone had erased.
I looked down the hallway.
Grant was standing behind me.
His face was pale.
Diane looked like she had seen a ghost.
Richard looked furious.
Not surprised.
Furious.
And that reaction told me everything.
He knew.
“You knew.”
I looked at Richard.
His expression hardened.
“Mara…”
“No.”
My voice became stronger.
“You knew she was alive.”
Richard didn't answer.
“You knew.”
He finally spoke.
“Yes.”
The word felt like another betrayal.
“How many secrets are there?”
Nobody answered.
I laughed softly.
A painful laugh.
“How many people in my life are not who they say they are?”
Amelia looked at me.
“I never wanted to hide from you.”
I turned toward her.
“Then why did you?”
Her eyes filled with sadness.
“Because your father asked me to.”
My chest tightened.
“Of course.”
The bitterness escaped before I could stop it.
“My father.”
I looked around.
“My entire life is just people following my father's instructions.”
Amelia stepped closer.
“He was trying to save you.”
“Everyone says that.”
My voice cracked.
“Everyone says they were saving me.”
I looked at Grant.
“Everyone lies for my protection.”
Grant looked down.
Because he knew he was part of that.
Amelia reached into her coat.
She pulled out a small envelope.
Not old.
Not damaged.
New.
She handed it to me.
“Your father wrote this after you turned eighteen.”
I stared.
“How do you have it?”
“Because he gave it to me.”
“Why?”
“Because he knew one day you would need someone who knew the entire truth.”
I looked at the envelope.
My name was written on it.
Mara Rose Kingsley.
Again.
My father's handwriting.
I opened it.
The first sentence made my hands shake.
Mara, if you are reading this, then Amelia has finally returned.
I looked up.
The room was silent.
I continued.
I know you will be angry.
A small, sad smile appeared in the writing.
You have every right to be.
My eyes burned.
Because that sounded like my father.
Not the billionaire.
Not the strategist.
My father.
The man who knew me.
The letter continued.
I made a terrible mistake.
Everyone became still.
I believed hiding the truth would protect my family.
I swallowed.
Instead, I taught everyone around you how to lie.
My vision blurred.
For the first time tonight…
My father admitted he was wrong.
Amelia was never a threat to you.
I looked at the woman standing across from me.
She was the first person who loved you before the world expected anything from you.
My breath caught.
A memory appeared.
A child's memory.
A woman singing.
A hand holding mine.
A voice saying:
“Don't be scared, little bird.”
I froze.
Little bird.
A phrase I hadn't heard since childhood.
A phrase my mother used.
A phrase nobody else knew.
I looked at Amelia.
“You were there.”
She cried silently.
“Yes.”
“When I was little?”
“Yes.”
“Why don't I remember?”
Her face broke.
“Because they made you forget.”
The room became silent.
“What?”
Amelia looked at Richard.
Then Diane.
Then Grant.
“Your father discovered someone was trying to manipulate your memories.”
I felt cold.
“My memories?”
She nodded.
“Not completely.”
“What does that mean?”
“You were given false explanations.”
I stared.
“Why?”
“Because someone wanted you to believe Amelia never existed.”
My heart raced.
“Who?”
Nobody spoke.
Then Amelia said:
“Your mother.”
The words hit me like a physical blow.
“My mother?”
Amelia nodded.
“She was trying to protect me.”
“From who?”
A long silence.
Then:
“From your father.”
I froze.
The room changed.
Again.
Every time I thought I understood my family, another truth appeared.
“My father?”
Amelia looked down.
“Your father loved you.”
A pause.
“But he was not always right.”
She looked at the photograph.
“He believed the only way to protect Bluebird was to control everyone around him.”
I remembered the letter.
The secrets.
The hidden files.
The people he manipulated.
The people he used.
Maybe my father wasn't a villain.
Maybe he wasn't a hero either.
Maybe he was just a man who became so afraid of losing his family that he destroyed the trust holding it together.
“What happened to you?”
I asked.
Amelia took a deep breath.
“When I discovered what Bluebird really contained, I tried to expose it.”
“What did you find?”
Her eyes moved toward Ellie.
“Something that would destroy the Kingsley family forever.”
Everyone became tense.
“What?”
She looked at me.
“Your father didn't create Bluebird because he feared outsiders.”
A pause.
“He created it because he discovered the Kingsley family itself was built on a lie.”
The room went silent.
Richard stepped forward.
“Enough.”
Amelia looked at him.
“No.”
For the first time, she sounded powerful.
“You don't control this anymore.”
Richard's expression darkened.
“You have no idea what happens if Mara learns everything.”
Amelia looked at me.
“She deserves to know.”
I stared at Richard.
“What are you hiding?”
Nobody answered.
Then the safe room computer downstairs suddenly activated.
A notification appeared.
Everyone looked toward the screen.
A new file had unlocked.
BLUEBIRD ORIGINAL BLOODLINE REPORT
My heart raced.
The system began loading.
A DNA report appeared.
Three names.
Richard Kingsley.
Amelia Kingsley.
Mara Kingsley.
Then a fourth name.
The name that made everyone freeze.
ELLIE MERCER.
I looked at my daughter.
The computer displayed one final message.
GENETIC SUCCESSION CONFIRMED.
My hands went cold.
Because Ellie was not only the heir.
She was not only the guardian's daughter.
She was connected to Bluebird in a way nobody expected.
Grant stepped closer.
“Mara…”
I looked at him.
“What?”
His face was filled with fear.
“Ellie isn't just the key.”
A pause.
“She is the reason Bluebird was activated.”
The screen changed.
One final warning appeared.
SUCCESSION EVENT DETECTED.
TRANSFER WINDOW: THREE DAYS.
The same date from the original file.
The custody transfer.
But now I understood.
It was never about taking Ellie away from me.
It was about transferring control of something much bigger.
Something my father built.
Something my family destroyed.
Something someone was willing to kill for.
I looked at Amelia.
“Who wants this?”
She didn't answer.
Because before she could…
The house alarm screamed.
The front gate camera activated.
A car stopped outside.
One person stepped out.
Someone none of us expected.
Someone who should have been protecting us.
Someone who had access to every Kingsley security system.
Alexander Vale.
But he wasn't alone.
Standing beside him was a team wearing Kingsley security uniforms.
Amelia's face changed.
“No.”
I looked at her.
“What?”
She whispered:
“He found us.”
“Who?”
Her eyes filled with fear.
“The real person behind Bluebird.”
The camera zoomed closer.
Alexander looked directly into the lens.
And said:
“Mara.”
A pause.
“I’m sorry.”
Then he raised a document.
“Your father’s final order has been executed.”
The screen displayed one sentence:
GUARDIAN REMOVAL PROTOCOL INITIATED.
I felt the blood leave my face.
Because my father's system…
May you like
The system designed to protect me…
Had just decided I was the threat.
