CHAPTER 11 — THE MAN WHO KNEW ME BEFORE I KNEW HIM

The screen stayed black.

No image.

No sound.

No explanation.

Only those words remained.

PROJECT BLUEBIRD PHASE TWO HAS BEGUN.

I stared at the monitor.

Waiting.

For something else.

A hidden message.

A second file.

Anything that could explain what I had just seen.

But nothing appeared.

The room was silent.

The kind of silence that happens when everyone realizes the truth is worse than the lies.

I slowly turned toward Grant.

He was staring at the screen.

Not confused.

Not surprised.

Terrified.

And that was the detail I could not ignore.

Because Grant had spent the entire night claiming he only knew pieces.

He claimed he was protecting me.

He claimed my father had controlled the situation.

But that video proved something impossible.

My husband had been part of Bluebird before he was my husband.

Before our first meeting.

Before our first date.

Before I even knew his name.

“Grant.”

My voice was quiet.

He didn't answer.

“Look at me.”

Slowly, he did.

And I saw something I had never seen in his eyes.

Guilt.

Not the guilt of a man caught cheating.

Not the guilt of a man exposed.

Something deeper.

Something older.

“You knew.”

Grant swallowed.

“Mara…”

“You knew my father before I knew you.”

He looked away.

That was enough.

I stepped back.

The pain wasn't sharp anymore.

It was something worse.

A numbness.

A feeling that every memory I had built with him was now covered by questions.

“When did you meet him?”

Grant didn't answer.

“Tell me.”

His jaw tightened.

“Twelve years ago.”

The room went still.

“Twelve years?”

“Yes.”

I laughed softly.

A broken laugh.

“You were already part of my life before I even knew you existed.”

“I wasn't.”

“You were.”

I pointed at the screen.

“My father recorded a video with you.”

Grant closed his eyes.

“Mara, listen to me.”

“No.”

My voice stopped him.

“Everyone has told me to listen tonight.”

I looked around the room.

“My father.”

“Diane.”

“Richard.”

“Vanessa.”

“Now you.”

I shook my head.

“I am done listening to people explain why they lied to me.”

Nobody spoke.

Because they knew I was right.

I turned back to Grant.

“Start from the beginning.”

He took a deep breath.

And for the first time that night…

He stopped defending himself.

“I was twenty-nine years old.”

He looked at the floor.

“My father had just died.”

I remembered.

The pain in his voice.

The way he avoided talking about his family.

The way he always changed the subject.

“I thought he was killed because he got too close to the truth.”

Grant continued.

“Your father found me.”

“Why?”

“To offer me a choice.”

“What choice?”

He looked at me.

“Help him uncover who was destroying both our families.”

I frowned.

“Both families?”

Grant nodded.

“My father was investigating Daniel Whitmore.”

My eyes moved toward Vanessa.

She looked down.

“Daniel was stealing information from Kingsley Holdings.”

Grant continued.

“But he wasn't acting alone.”

“Who was with him?”

A long pause.

Then:

“Someone inside the Kingsley family.”

My heart tightened.

Again.

The same answer.

The same shadow.

Someone close.

Someone trusted.

“Who?”

Grant looked toward Diane.

She immediately looked away.

That reaction told me everything.

But Grant didn't say the name.

Not yet.

“Your father didn't know at first.”

“Then why create Bluebird?”

“Because he needed proof.”

Grant walked closer to the computer.

“He created a system that recorded everything.”

“Every transaction.”

“Every conversation.”

“Every agreement.”

“A digital archive nobody could erase.”

I looked at the screen.

“And I was part of that?”

Grant nodded.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

His expression changed.

“Because your father knew you were the only person he could trust.”

I almost smiled.

“That is impossible.”

“Why?”

“Because he hid everything from me.”

Grant looked at me.

“He hid the danger.”

A pause.

“Not the truth.”

I frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Grant hesitated.

Then he reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a small envelope.

My heart stopped.

Another secret.

Another hidden message.

“Your father gave this to me the night before he died.”

I stared.

“You had something from my father this entire time?”

“Yes.”

The answer hurt.

“Why didn't you give it to me?”

“Because he told me not to.”

I laughed.

“Of course he did.”

Grant looked at the envelope.

“He said if I gave it to you too early, you would trust the wrong people.”

“And now?”

“Now you know enough.”

I took the envelope.

My hands were shaking.

Inside was a single letter.

My father's handwriting.

Again.

Mara.

Just my name.

Nothing else.

I continued reading.

If Grant is still beside you, then he chose you over the mission.

I stopped.

My eyes moved to Grant.

The next line:

If he betrayed you, then I failed to understand him.

I swallowed.

My father had trusted Grant.

Not because he was perfect.

Because he believed Grant would eventually choose.

The letter continued.

Mara, the hardest truth you will learn is that the person who hurts you is not always your enemy.

My chest tightened.

Sometimes they are the person who stayed closest because they were trying to keep the enemy away.

I looked up.

Grant was watching me.

The letter continued.

But do not forgive him because I told you to.

Forgive only if his actions prove his heart.

I lowered the paper.

For the first time all night…

My father wasn't telling me what to do.

He was giving me a choice.

Something he had rarely done.

“What happened the night he died?”

I asked.

Grant went silent.

Then:

“I was there.”

The room froze.

“You were there?”

“Yes.”

My heart started racing.

“Tell me.”

Grant looked at the photograph from earlier.

The one showing him shaking hands with my father.

“I was supposed to meet your father at his office.”

“Why?”

“He had discovered who was behind the operation.”

“And?”

Grant looked at me.

“He wanted to tell you everything.”

My breathing stopped.

“But he never got the chance.”

“Why?”

Grant's voice became quiet.

“Because when I arrived…”

A pause.

“He was already dying.”

Nobody moved.

“Who did it?”

Grant looked down.

“I don't know.”

“You were there.”

“I saw the person leave.”

“Who?”

His silence lasted too long.

Then he whispered:

“Your mother.”

The room exploded into silence.

Not my mother-in-law.

Not Diane.

My mother.

A woman who had died when I was sixteen.

A woman I barely remembered.

A woman everyone told me was gone before the empire became complicated.

“No.”

Grant looked at me.

“I didn't believe it either.”

“Impossible.”

“I know.”

“You saw her?”

“Yes.”

My hands started shaking.

“My mother died.”

Grant nodded.

“That is what everyone believed.”

Nobody spoke.

Then Richard suddenly laughed.

A cold laugh.

“Finally.”

Everyone turned.

Richard looked almost relieved.

“Someone finally said it.”

Diane stared at him.

“You knew?”

Richard smiled.

“I knew the Kingsley family had one final secret.”

He looked at me.

“And your father spent years trying to bury it.”

My heart felt like it was breaking.

“My mother is alive?”

Nobody answered.

That was the answer.

I looked at Ellie.

My daughter.

The child everyone was fighting over.

The child who carried a legacy she never asked for.

And suddenly another thought appeared.

If my mother was alive…

Where had she been all these years?

Why did she leave?

Why did my father hide it?

Why did everyone protect the lie?

Before I could ask…

The computer screen turned back on.

A new file appeared.

No golden falcon.

No security warning.

Only two words.

WELCOME HOME.

Then a video started.

A woman appeared.

Older.

But unmistakable.

My breath disappeared.

Because I knew that face.

I knew those eyes.

I had seen them in old photographs my father kept locked away.

The woman looked directly into the camera.

And said:

“Mara.”

My knees almost gave out.

Because the impossible was speaking to me.

“My daughter.”

A tear fell down my face.

The woman continued:

“If you are watching this…”

She looked afraid.

“Then Richard found you.”

The room went silent.

Then she said:

“And if Grant is beside you…”

A pause.

“Then my husband failed to protect you.”

I froze.

My husband?

The woman looked into the camera.

And spoke the words that shattered everything.

“Because Grant Mercer is not the man you think he is.”

The video stopped.

The screen went black.

May you like

Everyone looked at Grant.

And Grant looked like a man who had just lost the last chance to tell the truth himself.
