CHAPTER 14 — THE GUARDIAN WHO BECAME THE TARGET

The words on the screen felt impossible.

GUARDIAN REMOVAL PROTOCOL INITIATED.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Not because we didn't understand.

Because we understood too well.

The system my father created.

The system designed to protect the Kingsley legacy.

The system that recognized me as the guardian.

Had now identified me as the problem.

I stared at the monitor.

Waiting for someone to explain.

Waiting for someone to tell me this was another mistake.

Another misunderstanding.

Another secret with a reasonable explanation.

But nobody spoke.

And that silence told me the truth.

Everyone knew this was possible.

Everyone except me.

“Alexander.”

My voice was low.

The man standing outside the house watched through the security camera.

The same man who had saved me.

The same man who warned me.

The same man who claimed to serve my father.

He looked older than I remembered.

Tired.

Like a man carrying a burden he had carried for too long.

“Mara.”

His voice came through the speakers.

“I know you are angry.”

“Angry?”

I almost laughed.

“My father's system just marked me for removal.”

Alexander closed his eyes.

“I know.”

“Why?”

A long silence.

Then:

“Because your father planned for every possibility.”

My chest tightened.

“Including me becoming a threat?”

“Yes.”

The answer hurt.

More than I expected.

Because a part of me still hoped my father had believed in me completely.

But now I understood.

He believed in preparation more than people.

Even his own daughter.

“You knew.”

Alexander looked away.

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Since the night your father died.”

I felt something break inside me.

“The night he died…”

I repeated.

“The night everyone started lying.”

Nobody corrected me.

Because it was true.

I looked around the room.

At Grant.

At Diane.

At Amelia.

At Richard.

Everyone connected to a story I had never been allowed to hear.

“What does guardian removal mean?”

Alexander didn't answer.

That scared me.

“Answer me.”

His voice became quiet.

“It means Bluebird transfers control away from you.”

“To who?”

Silence.

Then:

“The secondary guardian.”

I frowned.

“There is another guardian?”

Amelia stepped forward.

“No.”

Everyone looked at her.

She shook her head.

“There was never supposed to be.”

Alexander's expression changed.

And I noticed it.

A small reaction.

A moment of fear.

“You know something.”

He didn't respond.

“Alexander.”

His eyes moved toward me.

“The secondary guardian was created as a failsafe.”

“By my father?”

“Yes.”

“Who is it?”

He looked down.

And for the first time…

Alexander looked ashamed.

“It is not a person.”

The room went silent.

“What does that mean?”

He answered:

“It is a system.”

I stared.

“A system?”

“A decision protocol.”

My confusion grew.

“A protocol cannot replace me.”

Alexander looked at the screen.

“It can if it determines you are compromised.”

The words hit me.

Compromised.

That was the word.

Not guilty.

Not dangerous.

Compromised.

Someone had convinced Bluebird that I was the problem.

“Who changed the system?”

Nobody answered.

Then Richard laughed.

A bitter laugh.

“Now we are finally asking the right question.”

Everyone turned toward him.

Richard stepped closer.

“Bluebird was never controlled by one person.”

I looked at him.

“Then who controls it?”

Richard looked at Alexander.

“People like him.”

Alexander's expression hardened.

“Don't.”

Richard ignored him.

“The guardians.”

I felt cold.

“The guardians?”

Richard nodded.

“Your father created Bluebird to protect the family.”

A pause.

“But he also created a group of people who could override the guardian.”

My heart raced.

“Who?”

Richard smiled.

“The Circle.”

The name meant nothing.

But everyone else reacted.

Diane.

Grant.

Amelia.

Everyone.

“What is The Circle?”

Amelia answered.

“Seven people.”

“Seven?”

“The most trusted people in the Kingsley organization.”

I looked at Alexander.

“You are one of them.”

He didn't deny it.

My stomach dropped.

“You were supposed to protect me.”

“I was.”

“Then why are you here?”

Alexander looked at Ellie.

“Because the Circle believes your daughter is safer without you.”

My entire body reacted.

“No.”

I stepped forward.

“No one takes my daughter.”

Alexander's expression changed.

Not anger.

Sadness.

“Mara, listen.”

“No.”

“They believe you are emotionally compromised.”

I laughed.

Emotionally compromised.

Because I loved my child.

Because I refused to sacrifice her for an empire.

Because I was human.

“They think I am weak because I am a mother.”

Alexander said nothing.

That was the answer.

Grant stepped beside me.

For once, without hesitation.

“They are wrong.”

Everyone looked at him.

Grant looked at Alexander.

“She is stronger than any of us.”

Alexander studied him.

“You chose her.”

Grant nodded.

“Yes.”

“You chose her over the mission.”

“Yes.”

Alexander sighed.

“Then you understand what happens next.”

Grant's expression changed.

“What?”

Alexander looked at the security team outside.

“Your access is revoked.”

A second later, Grant's phone went dark.

His security credentials disappeared.

His accounts.

His access.

Everything.

Just like mine had almost been.

One by one.

The people who protected us were being stripped away.

The system was isolating me.

Exactly as someone planned.

My phone suddenly vibrated.

A message appeared.

Unknown sender.

I opened it.

One sentence.

YOU SHOULD HAVE LET HIM TAKE YOU.

My blood froze.

Because I recognized the wording.

Not the person.

The style.

It sounded like my father.

I showed the message to Amelia.

Her face changed.

“That isn't possible.”

“What?”

She looked terrified.

“Your father used that phrase.”

“What phrase?”

She pointed at the screen.

“Let him take you.”

My heart tightened.

“Meaning?”

She whispered:

“It was part of a contingency.”

The room went silent.

“What contingency?”

Amelia looked at me.

“One where you were captured.”

I stared.

“Captured?”

She nodded.

“Your father believed if the Circle ever turned against you…”

A pause.

“He wanted them to think they had won.”

I frowned.

“Why?”

“Because the real Bluebird would activate.”

The computer screen suddenly changed.

The warning disappeared.

A new message appeared.

GUARDIAN STATUS: TEMPORARILY SUSPENDED.

Everyone froze.

Then another message appeared.

SECONDARY PHASE ACTIVATED.

I looked at Alexander.

“What is happening?”

His face turned pale.

“I don't know.”

That scared me.

Because Alexander always knew.

The screen continued.

EMERGENCY SUCCESSION TEST BEGINS.

A timer appeared.

72:00:00

Seventy-two hours.

Three days.

The same deadline.

The same date.

The same date Grant's custody documents mentioned.

But now I understood.

The custody transfer.

The inheritance transfer.

The Bluebird transfer.

They were all connected.

Someone had planned everything around one moment.

The timer began counting down.

71:59:59.

71:59:58.

I looked at Ellie.

Then at Grant.

Then at everyone.

“What happens when the timer reaches zero?”

Nobody answered.

Until Alexander finally spoke.

His voice was almost a whisper.

“When the timer reaches zero…”

He looked at me.

“Bluebird chooses the next guardian.”

I stared.

“And if it chooses someone else?”

Alexander looked away.

“Then you lose everything.”

The room became silent.

My daughter.

My family.

My father's legacy.

Everything.

But then something unexpected happened.

Ellie moved away from me.

Only a few steps.

Everyone froze.

“Ellie?”

She looked toward the computer.

Toward the golden falcon symbol.

Then she touched the screen.

The system immediately reacted.

The timer stopped.

Every light in the house turned on.

A new message appeared.

Everyone stared.

Because the system had recognized Ellie.

SECONDARY HEIR DETECTED.

Then one final line appeared:

WELCOME, LITTLE BIRD.

My heart stopped.

Because that was the name my mother used when I was a child.

The name nobody knew.

Except my father.

And now…

The system was calling my daughter by the same name.

I looked at Ellie.

She smiled innocently.

She had no idea what she had just activated.

But everyone else understood.

The war was no longer about controlling the empire.

It was about controlling the child who could inherit it.

And somewhere outside the house…

Someone was watching.

Someone who had been waiting for this exact moment.

The security cameras suddenly switched.

A new face appeared on every screen.

A man.

Older.

Powerful.

A man I had never met.

But the reaction around me told me everything.

Diane whispered:

“No…”

Grant stepped back.

Amelia covered her mouth.

Richard looked terrified.

The man on the screen smiled.

Then he said:

“Mara Kingsley.”

A pause.

“Your father made one mistake.”

He leaned closer.

“He thought he could hide you from me.”

The screen displayed his identity.

VICTOR KINGSLEY

My blood turned cold.

Because the name was impossible.

There was no Victor Kingsley.

Not in any family record.

Not in any company file.

Not anywhere.

Then Amelia whispered the truth:

“He is your father's brother.”

I stared at the screen.

A man erased from history.

A man who had waited decades.

A man who now wanted everything my father left behind.

Victor smiled.

“And now…”

He looked directly at Ellie.

“I am coming for what belongs to my family.”

The countdown restarted.

71:59:59.

May you like

And this time…

We knew exactly who we were fighting.
