CHAPTER 8 — THE FATHER WHO WANTED REVENGE

The sound of my name being called from outside my house was something I would never forget.
Not because it was loud.
Not because it was threatening.
Because I knew the voice.
Daniel Whitmore.
The man who had once sat beside my father during business meetings.
The man who had been trusted with the most confidential Kingsley information.
The man whose daughter had spent five years working beside me.
The man who was supposed to be dead to this family.
But he was alive.
And he was outside my home.
Coming for my daughter.
The glass from the shattered windows covered the floor.
Ellie was crying now.
Not loudly.
That somehow made it worse.
She was trying to be brave.
The same way she always did when she was scared.
I pulled her closer.
“Mommy is here.”
I whispered the words even though I wasn't sure they were true.
Because for the first time in my life…
I wasn't sure I could protect her.
Grant stayed beside me.
His arm was around Ellie.
His other hand held his phone.
The man who had betrayed me was now protecting me.
The irony was almost impossible to accept.
Richard Vale stood near the fireplace.
The confidence he had carried all night was gone.
He was staring toward the front door.
“He wasn't supposed to know.”
Diane looked at him.
“You knew he was alive?”
Richard didn't answer.
That answer was enough.
I turned toward them.
“Everyone knew.”
My voice was quiet.
“Everyone except me.”
Nobody responded.
Because it was true.
My entire life had been a room full of people whispering about me while I stood in the center.
The person everyone wanted to protect.
The person nobody trusted with the truth.
A loud удар hit the front door.
Everyone froze.
Then another.
The locks started shaking.
Grant looked at me.
“We need to move.”
“Where?”
“Safe room.”
I almost laughed.
A safe room.
Of course my family had a safe room.
A hidden place built for emergencies.
A place my father created because he always believed danger would eventually come.
I had thought he was paranoid.
Now I realized he was preparing.
Grant grabbed my hand.
“Come on.”
I hesitated.
Not because I didn't trust him.
Because I remembered every lie.
Every secret.
Every moment he chose someone else over me.
He saw it.
The hesitation.
And something changed in his expression.
“Mara.”
His voice was softer.
“I know you hate me.”
I looked at him.
“You have no idea.”
He nodded.
“I deserve that.”
Another удар hit the door.
The entire house shook.
“But right now…”
He looked at Ellie.
“I'm her father.”
The words hurt.
Because they were true.
No matter what happened between us.
No matter what he had done.
Ellie loved him.
And she needed both of us alive.
We moved toward the hidden entrance behind the library wall.
But before we reached it…
Daniel's voice came through the house speakers.
“Mara.”
Everyone stopped.
The security system.
He had accessed the security system.
“Mara Kingsley.”
Hearing my maiden name from him felt strange.
Like he was calling someone I no longer was.
“I know you are listening.”
I looked at Grant.
“How did he get inside the system?”
Nobody answered.
Daniel continued.
“I don't want a fight.”
Richard laughed bitterly.
“That's a lie.”
Daniel ignored him.
“I want what Richard stole from my family.”
I stepped closer to the speaker.
“Your daughter betrayed me.”
Silence.
Then Daniel answered.
“Did she?”
The question confused me.
“What?”
“Did Vanessa betray you?”
I remembered the phone call.
Her fear.
Her anger.
Her confession.
“She helped create this.”
“No.”
His voice became colder.
“She helped expose it.”
Everyone went silent.
“What are you talking about?”
Daniel answered:
“My daughter spent five years inside your family because she wanted the truth.”
My eyes narrowed.
“She manipulated me.”
“Yes.”
The honesty surprised me.
“She did.”
A pause.
“But she also protected your daughter more times than you will ever know.”
I looked at Grant.
Nobody moved.
Daniel continued.
“Your husband wasn't the only person investigating Bluebird.”
My stomach tightened.
“Then who was?”
“Vanessa.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
“Yes.”
His voice became emotional for the first time.
“She discovered that Richard planned to use Ellie.”
Richard stepped forward.
“Don't listen to him.”
Daniel laughed.
“Still pretending?”
The front door cracked.
The attackers were getting closer.
Daniel continued.
“Richard Vale didn't create Bluebird.”
Everyone looked at Richard.
“What?”
Daniel's voice echoed.
“Your father did.”
I felt confused.
“My father?”
“Yes.”
“Then why is everyone fighting over it?”
A pause.
Then Daniel said:
“Because Bluebird isn't a bank account.”
I waited.
“It is evidence.”
The room became silent.
“Evidence of what?”
Daniel answered:
“The reason your father was killed.”
My entire body went cold.
Nobody spoke.
Not Grant.
Not Diane.
Not Richard.
Because that was the first thing nobody had mentioned.
My father's death.
Everyone talked about secrets.
Inheritance.
Control.
Bluebird.
But nobody talked about the night my father died.
I stepped toward the speaker.
“You're saying my father was murdered?”
Daniel didn't answer.
And that silence confirmed everything.
“Who killed him?”
A long pause.
Then Daniel said:
“The person standing closest to him.”
My eyes moved around the room.
Grant.
Diane.
Richard.
Everyone had a reason.
Everyone had a secret.
Then the safe room door behind us suddenly opened.
Everyone turned.
Nobody was there.
Only a small envelope sitting on the floor.
Grant picked it up carefully.
My heart raced.
Because I knew that handwriting.
My father's handwriting.
Impossible.
Grant opened it.
Inside was a single photograph.
He looked at it.
Then his face changed.
“What?”
I took the photograph.
And my world stopped.
It was taken the night my father died.
My father was standing outside his office.
Beside him was a person I knew.
A person who claimed to love our family.
A person who had been lying to me from the beginning.
The photograph showed my father shaking hands with…
Grant.
I looked at my husband.
He didn't speak.
He didn't deny it.
And that was worse.
Because suddenly I realized something.
Grant wasn't only connected to my father's empire.
He was connected to my father's death.
I stepped away from him.
“Mara…”
I couldn't hear anything else.
Not Daniel.
Not Richard.
Not Diane.
Only one thought filled my mind.
The man I thought betrayed my marriage…
May have been the man who destroyed my entire family.
Then Grant whispered the words that broke everything.
“I can explain.”
But before he could say another word…
The safe room lights turned red.
A warning appeared on the screen.
INTRUDER ACCESS CONFIRMED.
Then another message appeared.
BLUEBIRD CORE HAS BEEN ACTIVATED.
And underneath it:
FINAL GUARDIAN: MARA KINGSLEY.
Everyone looked at me.
Including Grant.
Because nobody expected the system to choose me.
Nobody except my father.
And suddenly I understood.
My father had not hidden Bluebird from me.
He had hidden it for me.
The screen changed.
A video began playing.
My father's face appeared.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
“Mara…”
My knees almost gave out.
Because I was seeing my father after two years.
And his first words were:
“If you are watching this, then everyone you trusted has failed you.”
He paused.
Then looked directly into the camera.
“But there is one person you must not blame.”
The video stopped.
A loading symbol appeared.
NEXT FILE REQUIRES GUARDIAN VERIFICATION.
The system asked for one thing.
A fingerprint.
Mine.
I placed my hand on the scanner.
The door unlocked.
Inside was the final piece of my father's plan.
And the first thing I saw…
May you like
Was a file labeled:
GRANT MERCER — THE TRUTH.
