CHAPTER 17 — THE COUNTERATTACK

The first thing I did was turn off the screen.

Not because I was afraid.

Because I was done letting machines decide my family's future.

For hours, everyone had talked about systems.

Protocols.

Bloodlines.

Inheritance.

But nobody talked about the one person who mattered.

Ellie.

My daughter.

I looked at her.

She was sitting on the sofa.

Holding her stuffed rabbit.

Watching powerful adults destroy the world around her.

And I realized something.

Everyone had been fighting for her.

But nobody had asked what she needed.

I walked toward her.

“Mommy?”

I knelt.

“Are you scared?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

That surprised me.

“Why?”

She looked around the room.

“Because you are here.”

The answer almost broke me.

Because after everything...

After every betrayal...

After every secret...

My daughter still trusted me.

I hugged her.

And in that moment, I made my decision.

I didn't care about Bluebird.

I didn't care about the empire.

I didn't care who was the rightful heir.

Nobody was taking my daughter.

Not Victor.

Not the Circle.

Not my father.

Not a machine.

Nobody.

I stood.

“We are leaving.”

Everyone looked at me.

Grant stepped forward.

“Where?”

“Somewhere Bluebird can't find us.”

Alexander shook his head.

“Impossible.”

I looked at him.

“No.”

My voice was calm.

“Your mistake was believing my father built the only system.”

Everyone became silent.

Grant stared.

“What are you saying?”

I looked at the computer.

“My father taught me something.”

A pause.

“Every system has a weakness.”

Richard looked at me.

“Mara…”

I turned.

“You spent years teaching me business.”

He nodded.

“Then you taught me something else.”

“What?”

“How people think.”

The room became quiet.

Because everyone realized what I was doing.

I wasn't running.

I was fighting.

Victor appeared on every screen.

“You cannot defeat Bluebird.”

I looked at the camera.

“I don't need to defeat Bluebird.”

I smiled slightly.

“I need to understand it.”

For the first time...

Victor looked uncertain.

Good.

Because fear was the only language people like him understood.

I turned to Grant.

“I need your help.”

Everyone froze.

Grant looked surprised.

“After everything?”

I looked at him.

“Don't mistake trust for forgiveness.”

He nodded.

“I understand.”

“But you know my father's systems better than anyone.”

“Yes.”

“Then help me destroy the part that hurts my daughter.”

Grant looked at Ellie.

Then nodded.

“I will.”

Alexander stepped forward.

“And me?”

I studied him.

The man who betrayed my trust.

The man who served the Circle.

The man who still protected me.

“You have one chance.”

He nodded.

“What do you need?”

“Names.”

His expression changed.

“Of the Circle.”

Silence.

Because that was the one thing nobody wanted to reveal.

The Circle.

The seven people controlling Bluebird.

The seven people who decided my fate.

Alexander looked at Richard.

Then Diane.

Then me.

Finally, he spoke.

“I can give you five.”

“Five?”

“The other two…”

He stopped.

“Are untouchable.”

I narrowed my eyes.

“Who?”

Alexander whispered:

“One is the person who created the Circle.”

“And the other?”

He looked at Ellie.

“The person who has been protecting her from the beginning.”

My heart stopped.

“Who?”

Alexander didn't answer.

Because the house suddenly went silent.

Every phone turned on.

Every screen activated.

One message appeared.

MESSAGE FROM THE ORIGINAL GUARDIAN.

Everyone froze.

The screen opened.

And my mother's face appeared.

But this time…

She wasn't afraid.

She was angry.

“Mara.”

A pause.

“You finally chose correctly.”

My breath stopped.

My mother continued:

“Do not trust Bluebird.”

Everyone stared.

“Do not trust the Circle.”

Then she looked directly into the camera.

“And do not trust the man who claims to be your father.”

The room exploded.

Adrian stepped back.

“What?”

My mother's voice continued.

“Because the truth is…”

The screen glitched.

A final sentence appeared.

THE ORIGINAL BETRAYER IS ADRIAN KINGSLEY.

I looked at the man who claimed to be my biological father.

He looked shocked.

But I had learned one thing.

Shock did not mean innocence.

The screen went black.

And underneath appeared another message.

48 HOURS REMAINING.

The war had changed.

Again.

Now I didn't know who my enemy was.

I didn't know who my family was.

I didn't know whose truth to believe.

But I knew one thing.

For the first time...

I was not protecting an empire.

May you like

I was protecting my daughter.

And I was ready to destroy everything to save her.
