CHAPTER 16 — THE FATHER WHO WAS NEVER BURIED

The man standing in front of me held my father's ring.

Not a copy.

Not a family symbol.

The actual ring.

The one I had watched my father wear every day of my childhood.

The one that was buried with him.

Or at least…

The one I believed was buried with him.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Even Victor Kingsley looked powerless.

And that was the most terrifying thing.

Because Victor had spent the entire night acting like he controlled the room.

But now...

He looked like he was staring at a ghost.

The stranger looked around.

His eyes moved over everyone.

Richard.

Diane.

Grant.

Amelia.

Then finally stopped on me.

“Mara.”

The way he said my name made my entire body freeze.

Not because it was threatening.

Because it was familiar.

Like a voice from a dream I couldn't remember.

I stepped back.

“Who are you?”

The man looked at Ellie.

Then back at me.

“I am the man who should have raised you.”

My heart stopped.

“No.”

The room became silent.

The man slowly removed his coat.

Underneath was a black shirt.

And on his wrist was the golden falcon symbol.

The same symbol my father carried.

The same symbol connected to Bluebird.

“Mara…”

He took a breath.

“My name is Adrian Kingsley.”

Nobody moved.

Then Richard whispered:

“That’s impossible.”

The stranger looked at him.

“You said the same thing twenty-seven years ago.”

Richard's face changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

I looked at Amelia.

She was crying.

Not from surprise.

From recognition.

“You know him.”

She nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

My voice shook.

“Who is he?”

Amelia looked at me.

And the answer destroyed everything I thought I knew.

“He is your biological father.”

The room went silent.

My knees almost failed.

I grabbed the table.

“No.”

Adrian looked hurt.

“I know this is difficult.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“My father was Richard Kingsley.”

Nobody answered.

Because nobody could.

The man I spent my entire life calling father.

The man who raised me.

The man whose death I mourned.

Was suddenly not my biological father.

I looked at Richard.

He looked away.

And that hurt more than anything.

Because I already knew.

“Tell me.”

My voice became cold.

“Tell me everything.”

Richard closed his eyes.

Adrian stepped forward.

“I was never supposed to disappear.”

I stared.

“What happened?”

He looked at Victor.

“Your uncle tried to remove me.”

Victor laughed.

“You were weak.”

Adrian ignored him.

“He wanted control of the Kingsley family.”

“And Richard?”

Adrian looked at him.

“Richard helped me.”

The room froze.

Richard looked up.

“What?”

Adrian continued.

“Richard saved my life.”

I stared.

The man who raised me.

The man who built the empire.

Was not my biological father.

But he had saved the man who was.

My entire identity felt like it was collapsing.

“Why didn't anyone tell me?”

Nobody answered.

Then Adrian said:

“Because your mother made a choice.”

My heart tightened.

“My mother?”

“Yes.”

“What choice?”

Adrian looked at me.

“She chose to let you have a normal life.”

I almost laughed.

Normal.

My life had never been normal.

But compared to this...

Maybe she had tried.

“What happened to her?”

Adrian looked down.

“She believed if Victor knew you existed, you would become his target.”

“And?”

“She was right.”

I looked at Victor.

The man who had been waiting decades.

The man who wanted Ellie.

The man who wanted Bluebird.

“You knew about me.”

Victor smiled.

“I knew about your bloodline.”

My stomach tightened.

“But I never knew where your mother hid you.”

I looked at Adrian.

“So you were alive.”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Watching.”

The answer angered me.

“You watched me grow up?”

Adrian looked ashamed.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because every time I tried to return…”

He looked at Victor.

“Someone threatened your life.”

The room became silent.

I wanted to hate him.

I wanted to scream.

But the pain in his eyes was real.

And that confused me.

Because everyone had hurt me.

Everyone had lied.

But not everyone had done it for the same reason.

My phone suddenly vibrated.

A message from Bluebird.

BIOLOGICAL PATERNITY CONFIRMED.

The screen changed.

GUARDIAN STATUS RESTORED.

Everyone froze.

Then another message appeared.

PHASE THREE ACTIVATED.

A new file opened.

THE ORIGINAL BETRAYAL

I clicked it.

A video appeared.

My father's face.

Richard Kingsley's face.

Not Adrian.

The man who raised me.

He looked older.

Tired.

Broken.

“Mara…”

His voice shook.

“If you are seeing this, then Adrian has returned.”

I stared.

The video continued.

“I owe you the truth.”

Everyone watched.

“My greatest failure was not losing the empire.”

A pause.

“It was allowing you to believe I was your father without telling you where you came from.”

My eyes burned.

Richard continued.

“But I need you to understand something.”

He looked directly into the camera.

“I chose you.”

The room went silent.

“Not because of blood.”

“Because you were my daughter.”

A tear escaped before I could stop it.

Because that was the first honest thing anyone had said tonight.

The video continued.

“I protected Adrian because he was your father.”

“But I raised you because I loved you.”

I looked at Richard.

For the first time…

I saw not a billionaire.

Not a manipulator.

A father.

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then Victor smiled.

“Beautiful.”

Everyone looked at him.

“But irrelevant.”

He stepped forward.

“Because the truth changes nothing.”

I stared.

“What do you mean?”

Victor pointed at Ellie.

“Bluebird does not recognize love.”

A pause.

“It recognizes blood.”

My heart sank.

“And now…”

He smiled.

“It has found the original bloodline.”

The computer activated.

A new warning appeared.

PRIMARY HEIR CONFIRMED.

Everyone looked at Ellie.

My daughter.

Then the final message appeared.

TRANSFER OF BLUEBIRD AUTHORITY WILL BEGIN IN 48 HOURS.

My blood froze.

Two days.

Not three anymore.

The deadline had changed.

May you like

Victor smiled.

“Now the real war begins.”
