CHAPTER 8 — THE NIGHT EMMA DISAPPEARED

Olivia stared at the camera.
Her wrists were tied behind a wooden chair.
A strip of silver duct tape covered one side of her mouth.
Her eyes were wide, but she was conscious.
Alive.
Adrian felt something inside him snap.
“Where is she?”
Vanessa held the phone up.
“You want your daughter back?”
“Olivia is my daughter.”
“I know.”
“Then let her go.”
Vanessa smiled.
“You still don't understand.”
Adrian took a step forward.
“Try me.”
Vanessa glanced at Noah.
“This was never about Clara.”
Then she looked at Clara.
“And it was never really about Emma.”
Clara's face tightened.
“Then what do you want?”
Vanessa's smile vanished.
“You.”
Noah stepped between them.
“Leave her alone.”
Vanessa looked at him.
“You should be dead.”
Noah's expression hardened.
“So should you.”
Vanessa laughed quietly.
“That's where you're wrong.”
She turned the phone toward Olivia again.
“Everyone in this family has been asking the wrong question.”
Adrian's voice was cold.
“What's the right one?”
Vanessa leaned toward the camera.
“Who was the third child?”
The call ended.
For several seconds, the room was silent.
Then Adrian turned to Reed.
“Track that phone.”
“Already trying.”
“Find her.”
“I will.”
Adrian looked at Noah.
“You said you weren't the third child.”
“I know.”
“How?”
“My records.”
“Records can be falsified.”
Noah stared at him.
“You think I'm lying?”
“I think someone has spent twenty-four years creating lies.”
Clara stepped between them.
“Stop.”
Both men looked at her.
“We don't have time to fight.”
She turned toward Reed.
“Can you find Olivia?”
“I have a partial signal.”
“Where?”
“North of the city.”
Adrian immediately moved toward the door.
Reed grabbed his arm.
“Wait.”
“She's my daughter.”
“And walking into a trap alone won't help her.”
“I don't care.”
“You should.”
Reed held up the phone.
“The signal is moving.”
Adrian stopped.
“Moving where?”
“Toward the old Whitmore estate.”
His face went pale.
“My father's house?”
Reed nodded.
“The one he supposedly abandoned before his death.”
Adrian looked at Clara.
She was staring at Noah.
Noah whispered:
“That's where he raised me.”
Adrian froze.
“What?”
Noah nodded.
“I lived there for seven years.”
“When?”
“After I was taken.”
“Why didn't I know?”
“Because you were never allowed there.”
Adrian stared at him.
“What do you mean?”
Noah's expression darkened.
“Your father kept me hidden.”
The old Whitmore estate stood outside the city.
The house had been abandoned for nearly two decades.
Tall iron gates surrounded it.
Dead trees lined the driveway.
The windows were dark.
Adrian's SUV stopped outside.
Reed and two officers followed.
Clara and Noah stayed behind them.
Adrian looked at the house.
“I've never been here.”
Noah nodded.
“You weren't supposed to.”
“Why?”
“Because your father didn't want you to know about me.”
Clara looked at him.
“Did Richard hurt you?”
Noah shook his head.
“No.”
“Then why hide you?”
“Because someone was looking for me.”
“Who?”
Noah looked toward the house.
“Vanessa's father.”
Inside the house, Olivia struggled against the ropes.
The room was cold.
A single bulb hung above her.
Vanessa stood nearby.
“You're very much like your father.”
Olivia glared at her.
Vanessa removed the tape.
“Where's Emma?”
Olivia refused to answer.
Vanessa smiled.
“You think you're protecting her.”
“I am.”
“You don't even know what she is.”
Olivia's eyes narrowed.
“She is my sister.”
Vanessa's expression softened strangely.
“No.”
“She is.”
“You're defending a child who was never supposed to exist.”
Olivia stared at her.
“What does that mean?”
Vanessa looked away.
“Your father was given a choice.”
“What choice?”
“His family or the truth.”
Olivia frowned.
“You're lying.”
Vanessa walked toward a cabinet.
She removed an old file.
“You want to know why your grandfather died?”
Olivia's face changed.
“My grandfather?”
“Richard Whitmore.”
“You said he was alive.”
“He was.”
“Where is he?”
Vanessa placed the file on the table.
“Gone.”
Olivia stared.
“What happened?”
Vanessa opened the file.
Inside was a photograph of Richard.
He was sitting in a hospital bed.
A younger Vanessa stood beside him.
Olivia stared at the image.
“Why are you there?”
Vanessa looked at her.
“Because your grandfather trusted me.”
“You killed him?”
“No.”
“Then who did?”
Vanessa hesitated.
“Your father.”
Olivia's eyes widened.
“My dad?”
Vanessa nodded.
“He thought Richard betrayed him.”
“That makes no sense.”
“It will.”
Vanessa removed another document.
“Read this.”
Olivia looked down.
It was a letter from Richard.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
ADRIAN MUST NEVER KNOW THE CHILD IS HIS.
Olivia stared.
“What child?”
Vanessa smiled.
“Now you're asking the right question.”
Outside, Adrian entered the house.
The front door opened without resistance.
Dust covered the floor.
Old furniture remained exactly where it had been left.
Noah walked behind him.
“This hallway.”
He pointed.
“I used to sleep upstairs.”
Adrian looked at him.
“You remember?”
“Every detail.”
They entered a small room.
There was a faded blue carpet.
A broken toy.
A wooden bed.
Noah stopped.
“This was mine.”
Clara walked toward the wall.
There were pencil marks.
Heights.
Dates.
Names.
She touched one.
NOAH — AGE 7.
Then another.
NOAH — AGE 8.
Another.
NOAH — AGE 9.
Clara's eyes filled with tears.
“You grew up here.”
“Yes.”
“Alone?”
“No.”
“Who was with you?”
Noah looked at Adrian.
“Your father.”
Adrian stared at the wall.
“Did he raise you?”
“Yes.”
“Like a son?”
Noah hesitated.
“Like someone he needed to protect.”
A sound came from downstairs.
Adrian immediately drew his weapon.
“Stay here.”
They moved down the staircase.
A door slammed.
Adrian ran toward it.
Empty.
Then he noticed something on the floor.
A child's shoe.
Emma's.
Adrian picked it up.
His face collapsed.
“She was here.”
Clara looked around.
“Then she may still be.”
Noah crouched beside the floor.
“There.”
A hidden mark was scratched into the wood.
17.
He touched it.
“Room seventeen.”
Adrian frowned.
“There's no room seventeen.”
Noah looked toward the wall.
“There was.”
“What happened to it?”
“My father sealed it.”
“Why?”
“Because that's where everything started.”
They found the hidden entrance behind an old bookshelf.
Noah pressed a panel.
The wall opened.
A narrow staircase descended underground.
Adrian turned to Reed.
“You stay here.”
Reed shook his head.
“No.”
“I'll go.”
“We all go.”
They descended.
The passage led to a room filled with old documents.
Photographs.
Medical files.
And dozens of children's bracelets.
Clara picked one up.
The name:
EMMA.
Adrian's heart stopped.
“That's impossible.”
Noah looked at another.
NOAH.
Then Clara found one.
Her own name.
CLARA.
All three bracelets had been stored together.
Adrian looked at the dates.
All were from the same hospital.
Same day.
Same room.
June 14.
Clara whispered:
“We weren't three babies.”
Adrian looked at her.
“What?”
“We were three children being tracked.”
Noah shook his head.
“No.”
He picked up another document.
His eyes widened.
“Clara.”
“What?”
“This isn't a birth record.”
“What is it?”
“It's a transfer record.”
“To where?”
Noah turned it around.
WHITMORE FAMILY TRUST — BENEFICIARY: UNKNOWN FEMALE CHILD.
Adrian stared.
“Unknown female?”
Clara looked at the date.
“June 15.”
The day after their birth.
Then Adrian noticed something else.
A second transfer.
BENEFICIARY: EMMA WHITMORE.
Date:
June 15.
He froze.
“Emma's identity was created the day after we were born.”
Clara looked at him.
“What does that mean?”
“It means Emma's birth certificate may have been created after the fact.”
Noah's face hardened.
“And if that's true…”
“Someone replaced a child's identity.”
A scream echoed from upstairs.
Olivia.
Adrian ran.
“OLIVIA!”
They rushed up the stairs.
The room was empty.
The chair remained.
The ropes were cut.
The window was open.
Adrian's heart dropped.
Then he saw blood on the floor.
Not much.
Just a small smear.
Clara's face went pale.
“No.”
Reed examined it.
“It's not enough to tell us whose blood it is.”
Adrian grabbed the window frame.
Outside, tire tracks led into the woods.
Then he saw something else.
A small silver pendant.
He picked it up.
Clara recognized it immediately.
“My mother's.”
Adrian looked at her.
“Why would Olivia have this?”
Clara stared at the pendant.
“I never gave it to her.”
Noah took it.
There was an engraving inside.
E.B.
Evelyn Bennett.
Clara's mother.
Noah turned it over.
Another engraving.
17 — THIRD CHILD.
Clara stopped breathing.
“No…”
Adrian stared.
“What?”
Clara whispered:
“My mother knew.”
“Knew what?”
“That one of us would disappear.”
At the edge of the woods, a car stopped.
Vanessa stepped out.
Olivia was in the back seat.
She was conscious.
Her wrists were still tied.
But Vanessa wasn't alone.
A woman stood beside the trees.
Silver hair.
Elegant black coat.
The same woman Vanessa had met at the hotel.
Olivia stared at her.
“Who are you?”
The woman smiled.
“You've seen my name before.”
Olivia frowned.
“Where?”
“In your father's company records.”
She stepped closer.
“My name is Victoria Harper.”
Olivia's eyes widened.
“Vanessa's mother?”
Victoria smiled.
“Very good.”
Vanessa handed her the phone.
“She found the files.”
Victoria looked at Olivia.
“How much does she know?”
“Enough.”
Victoria sighed.
“Then she cannot go home.”
Olivia glared.
“My father will find me.”
Victoria's smile disappeared.
“That's exactly what I'm counting on.”
Adrian returned to the underground room.
He opened every file.
Then he found something hidden beneath a false bottom.
A video cassette.
A label:
JUNE 15 — 2:14 A.M.
They found an old player.
Reed connected it.
The screen flickered.
Richard appeared.
Holding a newborn.
Beside him was Evelyn Bennett.
She was crying.
Richard spoke softly.
“I swear I will protect them.”
Evelyn shook her head.
“You can't protect all three.”
“I have to try.”
“You know what Vanessa's father will do.”
“I know.”
“What about Emma?”
Richard looked down at the baby.
“Emma will have a new identity.”
Evelyn's face collapsed.
“And my children?”
“Clara will stay with you.”
“And Noah?”
Richard hesitated.
“I'll take him.”
Evelyn began crying.
“Don't let them find him.”
Richard nodded.
“I won't.”
Then the recording changed.
A new person entered the room.
Victoria Harper.
She was younger.
She walked toward Richard.
“You've made your decision.”
Richard looked at her.
“I have.”
Victoria looked at the three babies.
“You can't hide them forever.”
Richard answered:
“No.”
He paused.
“But I can separate them long enough to keep them alive.”
The recording ended.
Clara was crying.
Noah stared at the screen.
Adrian couldn't speak.
Then Reed noticed something.
The timestamp continued.
Another file had been recorded immediately afterward.
He pressed play.
Richard appeared again.
But this time he looked terrified.
“If you're watching this, then Victoria has found us.”
He leaned closer to the camera.
“Adrian, listen carefully.”
Adrian froze.
“Your wife is not Emma's mother.”
His breathing stopped.
“Vanessa knows this.”
Clara covered her mouth.
Richard continued:
“And the woman who raised you is not the person you think she is.”
Adrian stared.
“What?”
Richard's final words were barely audible.
“Because the woman you call your mother…”
He paused.
“…is actually Victoria Harper's sister.”
The screen went black.
No one moved.
Then Adrian's phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
Vanessa's voice whispered:
“Now you understand why I had to destroy Clara.”
Adrian's eyes hardened.
“Where is Olivia?”
“Safe.”
“Where is Emma?”
A pause.
“You're asking the wrong question again.”
“What do you want?”
“I want Clara.”
Adrian's jaw tightened.
“Why?”
Vanessa whispered:
“Because Clara is the only person who can identify the third child.”
Clara froze.
“What third child?”
Vanessa laughed softly.
“You still don't know?”
The call ended.
Then a message appeared on Adrian's phone.
A photograph.
Emma.
Alive.
Sleeping peacefully.
Beside her was another child.
A boy.
Older.
Maybe seven years old.
And beneath the photograph:
YOU HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR THE WRONG BROTHER.
Adrian stared at the image.
Clara's face went white.
Noah stepped closer.
Then he whispered:
“That boy…”
Adrian looked at him.
“What?”
Noah's eyes widened.
“I know him.”
Clara's voice trembled.
“Who is he?”
Noah stared at the screen.
“He was the child who lived with me.”
Adrian's heart stopped.
“The child your father was protecting?”
Noah nodded.
“But I thought he disappeared.”
Clara whispered:
“What's his name?”
Noah looked at her.
His voice broke.
“Ethan.”
The phone vibrated again.
One final message appeared:
May you like
ETHAN IS THE THIRD CHILD.
AND HE IS ADRIAN'S SON.
