CHAPTER 5 — CLARA’S SECRET

The metal door behind them opened another inch.
No one moved.
Adrian stared at the darkness beyond it.
Clara stood beside him, trembling.
Detective Reed immediately drew his weapon.
“Stay behind me.”
An officer moved toward the doorway.
“Clear!”
The beam of his flashlight swept across the room.
Empty.
Just a narrow service corridor disappearing into darkness.
Adrian barely noticed.
His attention remained fixed on the dead monitor.
Richard's final words kept repeating in his mind.
Your daughter Emma is not the child you think she is.
He turned slowly toward Clara.
“What does that mean?”
Clara's lips parted.
Nothing came out.
“Clara.”
She looked at him.
“I don't know.”
Adrian's expression hardened.
“Don't lie to me.”
“I’m not.”
“Then why did you say you were going to tell me?”
“Because I knew there was something wrong.”
“What?”
Clara looked toward Emma, who was sleeping in Olivia's arms.
“I don't know who her biological mother is.”
Adrian stared at her.
“You're saying you don't know?”
Clara shook her head.
“I know what your father told my mother.”
“What did he tell her?”
“That a child would one day be placed in your care.”
Adrian's face went pale.
“Emma?”
“I don't know.”
“Then why did you come into my house?”
Clara closed her eyes.
“Because I was looking for the truth.”
Adrian took a step toward her.
“And you never thought to tell me?”
“I tried.”
“When?”
“Before I ever started working for you.”
Adrian frowned.
“You applied to work for my family.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Clara looked directly into his eyes.
“Because your father asked me to.”
Silence.
Adrian felt as though the ground had shifted beneath him.
“My father was dead when you came here.”
“I know.”
“Then how could he ask you?”
Clara reached into her bag and pulled out an old phone.
“He left this for me.”
Adrian stared at it.
“What's on it?”
“Messages.”
“From Richard?”
“Yes.”
“Show me.”
Clara unlocked the phone.
There were only seven messages.
All from an unknown number.
But the first one was dated two years ago.
IF YOU EVER MEET MY SON, DO NOT TELL HIM ABOUT ME.
The second:
WATCH THE CHILD.
The third:
VANESSA WILL TRY TO CONTROL ADRIAN.
The fourth:
SHE MUST NEVER KNOW ABOUT THE FILE.
Adrian's eyes widened.
“What file?”
Clara scrolled.
There were no more messages.
“That's all.”
“Then what file was he talking about?”
“I don't know.”
Adrian looked at her.
“You expect me to believe all of this?”
“No.”
Clara's voice broke.
“I expect you to understand why I was afraid.”
Adrian's anger softened.
“Afraid of what?”
Clara stared at the floor.
“Of becoming the next person Vanessa blamed.”
Vanessa sat in the back of her car.
She watched the hospital from across the street.
Her phone displayed a live feed.
Adrian.
Clara.
Olivia.
Detective Reed.
All of them were still in the basement.
Her driver looked at her.
“They found the locker.”
“I know.”
“They have the letter.”
Vanessa's jaw tightened.
“Then we move to the second plan.”
The driver hesitated.
“And Emma?”
Vanessa looked at the screen.
“Emma stays where she is.”
“For now?”
“For now.”
“And Clara?”
Vanessa's expression became cold.
“Clara is no longer useful.”
The driver looked uncomfortable.
“You said she was important.”
“She was.”
Vanessa closed the phone.
“Until she remembered who she really was.”
At the hospital, Reed took Adrian aside.
“You need to tell me everything you know about Clara.”
“I just learned most of it.”
“Then tell me what you knew before tonight.”
Adrian hesitated.
“She came to work for my family eight months ago.”
“Why?”
“She was recommended by an agency.”
“Which agency?”
Adrian pulled out his phone.
“Whitmore Household Services.”
Reed frowned.
“Who owns it?”
“I do.”
“You own the agency?”
“Yes.”
“Then who approved her?”
Adrian checked the records.
His expression changed.
“Vanessa.”
Reed stared at him.
“Of course.”
“What?”
“That's your connection.”
Adrian looked at the employment record.
Clara's application had been approved electronically.
By Vanessa.
The date was eight months ago.
Three weeks before Clara first entered the mansion.
Adrian whispered:
“She brought Clara into my house.”
Reed nodded.
“But why?”
Clara overheard them.
“Because she wanted me close to Emma.”
Adrian turned.
“Why would Vanessa want that?”
Clara swallowed.
“Maybe she thought I knew something.”
“What?”
Clara looked at the hospital file.
“About your father.”
The box from locker seventeen contained one more envelope.
Adrian hadn't noticed it.
Olivia found it beneath the photographs.
“Dad.”
Adrian turned.
“What?”
She held up a sealed envelope.
“There's another one.”
Adrian took it.
The front read:
FOR CLARA — ONLY.
Clara stared at it.
“I've never seen that.”
Adrian handed it to her.
She opened it with shaking fingers.
Inside was a single photograph.
Her mother.
Standing beside Richard Whitmore.
But this photograph was different.
They weren't standing like employer and employee.
They were holding hands.
Clara's breathing stopped.
Behind them was a hospital nursery.
And in the background—
A baby crib.
A small white card hung from it.
BABY GIRL — ROOM 17.
Clara's eyes filled with tears.
“My mother…”
Adrian stared at the picture.
“Who is the baby?”
Clara turned the photograph over.
There was a note.
THE CHILD WAS BORN ON JUNE 14.
Adrian froze.
“June 14.”
Clara looked at him.
“That's Emma's birthday.”
Neither of them spoke.
Olivia stepped closer.
“Dad…”
Adrian shook his head.
“No.”
“But—”
“No.”
He looked at Clara.
“Emma was born at St. Vincent.”
Clara nodded.
“So was the baby in this photograph.”
Adrian's mind raced.
He remembered the day Emma was born.
Vanessa had been there.
His mother had been there.
The doctors.
The nurses.
Everyone had told him the same thing.
His daughter had been born healthy.
Her mother had died during childbirth.
But there had always been one detail he had never questioned.
The hospital had refused to let him see Emma for nearly three hours after the delivery.
They had said there were complications.
He had accepted it.
Because he had been exhausted.
Grieving.
Terrified.
And Vanessa had been beside him.
Now that memory returned with frightening clarity.
Three hours.
Three missing hours.
Adrian whispered:
“What happened during those three hours?”
Clara looked at him.
“I think that's what Vanessa has been hiding.”
Back at the mansion, police searched every room.
Olivia followed them.
She couldn't stop thinking about the nursery.
The hidden camera.
The silver key.
The missing ten minutes.
Then she remembered something.
The key marked seventeen.
She returned to the nursery.
She looked at the closet.
Above it.
Below it.
Behind the crib.
Nothing.
Then she noticed the old wooden rocking chair.
It had belonged to Adrian's mother.
Olivia moved it.
A small metal plate was embedded in the floor.
17.
She crouched.
There was a keyhole.
Olivia inserted the silver key.
Click.
The floor panel opened.
Inside was a narrow compartment.
A black folder.
She pulled it out.
On the front:
EMMA WHITMORE — CONFIDENTIAL
Olivia opened it.
Her hands began shaking.
Medical records.
Birth records.
A photograph.
And a DNA report.
She read the first line.
Then stopped.
“No…”
The DNA report contained two names.
CHILD: EMMA WHITMORE
BIOLOGICAL MOTHER: UNKNOWN
BIOLOGICAL FATHER: ADRIAN WHITMORE
Olivia frowned.
“That can't be right.”
She flipped the page.
The report had been performed six months earlier.
Not by the hospital.
By a private laboratory.
The requesting party:
VANESSA HARPER.
Olivia's heart pounded.
Why would Vanessa order a DNA test on Emma?
Then she saw the second page.
A handwritten note.
RESULTS CONFIRM CHILD WAS NOT BORN TO THE WOMAN LISTED AS HER MOTHER.
Olivia's eyes widened.
She immediately called Adrian.
He answered.
“What happened?”
“Dad, come home.”
“Why?”
“I found something.”
“What?”
“I found Emma's file.”
Silence.
“What file?”
“The one Vanessa didn't want us to find.”
Adrian returned to the mansion less than twenty minutes later.
Olivia placed the folder on the dining table.
Clara stood nearby.
Reed watched silently.
Adrian opened the DNA report.
He read it once.
Then again.
His hands began shaking.
“The mother listed on Emma's birth certificate…”
“Isn't her biological mother,” Olivia said.
Adrian looked at Clara.
“Who is?”
“We don't know.”
He turned the page.
There was a second report.
A DNA comparison between Emma and another woman.
The woman's name was blacked out.
But beneath it:
MATCH: 99.98%
Adrian stared.
“Who is this?”
Olivia shook her head.
“The name was redacted.”
“Can you recover it?”
“I can try.”
Clara suddenly spoke.
“Don't.”
Everyone turned.
“Why?”
Clara stared at the report.
“Because I know who it is.”
Adrian's heart stopped.
“You do?”
Clara nodded.
“The woman in the photograph with your father.”
Adrian looked at her.
“Who?”
Clara's voice was barely audible.
“My mother.”
Silence filled the room.
Adrian stared at Clara.
Then at Emma.
Then back at Clara.
“You're saying your mother is Emma's biological mother?”
Clara nodded slowly.
“I think so.”
Adrian couldn't breathe.
“But that would mean…”
“Yes.”
Clara looked at him.
“My mother gave birth to Emma.”
Olivia whispered:
“Then why did she disappear?”
Clara's eyes filled with tears.
“Because she didn't.”
Adrian frowned.
“What?”
Clara reached into her bag and pulled out another document.
A death certificate.
The name:
Evelyn Bennett.
Date of death:
June 15.
One day after Emma's birth.
Cause:
Complications following childbirth.
Adrian stared at it.
“That can't be.”
Clara looked at him.
“My mother died the day after Emma was born.”
No one spoke.
Then Adrian noticed something.
The certificate had been issued by St. Vincent Medical Center.
But the signature at the bottom was not from the doctor listed in the hospital records.
It was from someone else.
A doctor whose name Adrian recognized.
Dr. Samuel Harper.
Vanessa's father.
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
“Harper.”
Clara looked at him.
“Vanessa's father?”
“Yes.”
Adrian stood.
“He delivered Emma.”
Reed immediately took the document.
“Then Vanessa has been connected to this since the beginning.”
Adrian's face hardened.
“And she knew Clara's mother.”
Clara shook her head.
“No.”
“What?”
“My mother didn't just know Vanessa's father.”
Clara's voice trembled.
“He was the one who signed the order that separated my mother from Emma.”
Adrian stared at her.
“Why?”
Clara looked down.
“Because someone paid him.”
“Who?”
She hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Your father.”
Adrian's entire body went still.
“My father paid him?”
“Yes.”
“But why would Richard take his own son's child?”
Clara shook her head.
“He didn't.”
She looked toward Emma's room.
“He was protecting her.”
Adrian stared.
“From who?”
Clara's eyes filled with fear.
“From Vanessa.”
That night, Vanessa returned to the mansion.
She entered through the back door.
She knew exactly where the cameras were.
She moved through the dark hallway.
Up the stairs.
Toward Emma's nursery.
But before she reached the door—
The lights turned on.
Adrian stood at the end of the hallway.
Clara stood beside him.
Olivia was behind them.
Detective Reed waited near the staircase.
Vanessa stopped.
For the first time, there was no performance on her face.
No tears.
No trembling.
Just fear.
Adrian held up the DNA report.
“Tell me the truth.”
Vanessa said nothing.
“Who is Emma's biological mother?”
Silence.
Adrian stepped closer.
“Is it Clara's mother?”
Vanessa's face changed.
That was all the confirmation he needed.
Adrian's voice became cold.
“And what did my father do to protect Emma?”
Vanessa backed away.
“You don't understand.”
“Then explain it.”
“You're asking questions you shouldn't ask.”
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
“Why?”
“Because once you know…”
She looked at Emma's nursery.
“…there is no going back.”
Olivia stepped forward.
“We already know about the surveillance.”
Vanessa stared at her.
“And the missing ten minutes,” Olivia added.
Vanessa's face went pale.
“What did you say?”
“The hospital locker.”
Vanessa's expression collapsed.
Adrian saw it.
She knew about the missing footage.
She knew about the locker.
She knew about Richard.
And she knew exactly what had happened to Emma.
Adrian took another step.
“Where is my father?”
Vanessa stared at him.
Then she whispered:
“He's alive.”
Adrian froze.
Clara covered her mouth.
Olivia's eyes widened.
Vanessa continued:
“But he's not the man you remember.”
Before Adrian could respond, every light in the mansion suddenly went out.
A gunshot exploded downstairs.
Someone screamed.
Then Emma began crying.
Adrian ran toward the nursery.
Clara followed.
But when they reached the door—
The crib was empty.
The window was open.
And hanging from the curtain rod was a single piece of paper.
Adrian tore it down.
Five words were written across it:
YOUR FATHER TOOK THE BABY.
Adrian stared at the message.
Then another sound came from outside.
A car accelerating away.
Clara rushed to the window.
She saw the taillights disappearing into the darkness.
And on the rear windshield was a small white sticker.
A symbol she recognized from her mother's old photographs.
Clara whispered:
“The Whitmore family crest.”
Adrian turned toward her.
His face had gone pale.
“My father took Emma.”
Clara shook her head.
“No.”
She pointed toward the disappearing vehicle.
“That isn't your father's car.”
Adrian looked at her.
“Then whose is it?”
May you like
Clara's eyes filled with terror.
“Someone who wants you to believe he came back.”
