CHAPTER 14 — THE FIFTH CHILD

The young woman stood beneath the porch light.

Rain fell behind her.

She looked exhausted.

Frightened.

But strangely familiar.

Adrian couldn't take his eyes off her.

Clara stood a few feet behind him, staring at the birthmark beneath the woman's left ear.

The same tiny crescent-shaped mark Clara had.

The same mark that appeared in the old medical records.

Richard looked like he'd seen a ghost.

“Maya,” he whispered.

The young woman turned toward him.

“You know me.”

Richard closed his eyes.

“I knew this day would come.”

Adrian's voice hardened.

“You knew?”

Richard said nothing.

Adrian stepped forward.

“You knew she existed?”

“Yes.”

“For twenty-four years?”

Richard looked at Maya.

“For twenty-three.”

Maya's face changed.

“Twenty-three?”

Adrian stared at his father.

“Start talking.”

Richard lowered his head.

“I will.”

“No more lies.”

“I know.”

“No hidden files.”

“I know.”

“No half-truths.”

Richard swallowed.

“I know.”

Adrian pointed toward the living room.

“Then everyone sits down.”

THE FIFTH FILE

Maya entered the house.

Emma watched her curiously.

Lucas stood beside Clara.

Noah remained near the doorway.

Olivia quietly locked the front door.

Nobody spoke.

Adrian placed the photograph on the table.

Five names were written on the back.

CLARA.

NOAH.

ETHAN.

LUCAS.

MAYA.

Adrian looked at Richard.

“Were these five children born from the same family?”

Richard nodded.

“Yes.”

Clara's eyes widened.

“You said there were four.”

“There were supposed to be four.”

“What changed?”

Richard looked at Maya.

“She was born afterward.”

Maya's voice trembled.

“After what?”

Richard took a breath.

“After the original transfer.”

Adrian frowned.

“Explain.”

Richard opened his old briefcase.

Inside was a thin red folder.

He placed it on the table.

The cover read:

PROJECT ECHO — FINAL SUBJECT

Beneath it:

MAYA BENNETT

Clara stopped breathing.

“Bennett?”

Richard nodded.

“She carries Evelyn's bloodline.”

Clara stared at Maya.

“Then you're…”

“My sister.”

Maya's voice broke.

“Yes.”

Clara slowly approached her.

For a moment, neither woman moved.

Then Clara whispered:

“Why didn't anyone tell me?”

Maya looked down.

“Because everyone thought I was dead.”

THE NIGHT MAYA WAS BORN

Richard opened the file.

Inside was an old hospital photograph.

Evelyn was lying in a hospital bed.

Clara, Noah, and Ethan had already been born.

But Evelyn was pregnant again.

Adrian stared.

“You never told me.”

Richard shook his head.

“I didn't know.”

“Then who did?”

“Victoria.”

Clara's hands began trembling.

“She knew?”

“Yes.”

Richard continued.

“Victoria discovered Evelyn was pregnant again.”

“Why?”

“Because Maya wasn't supposed to exist.”

Adrian frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Richard looked at Clara.

“Your mother had undergone a procedure after your birth.”

Clara's face changed.

“She was told she couldn't have another child.”

Richard nodded.

“But she became pregnant again.”

“With Maya?”

“Yes.”

Clara looked at Maya.

“So she was a miracle.”

Richard's expression darkened.

“She was a threat.”

THE SECRET

Maya sat silently.

Adrian looked at her.

“Who raised you?”

Maya hesitated.

“A family named Carter.”

“Did they know who you were?”

“No.”

“Did you know?”

“Not until six months ago.”

Adrian frowned.

“How?”

Maya reached into her bag.

She pulled out an old cassette tape.

“This.”

Adrian took it.

“What is it?”

“My adoptive mother found it after she died.”

Clara stared.

“What does it say?”

Maya shook her head.

“I never listened to the entire thing.”

“Why?”

“Because the first time I heard it…”

She looked at Richard.

“…I heard his voice.”

Richard closed his eyes.

Maya continued:

“He said my name.”

Adrian looked at his father.

“You recorded it?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To make sure Maya would eventually find the truth.”

“Then why didn't you give it to her?”

“Because Victoria found out.”

Richard's voice became quiet.

“She took the tape.”

Maya frowned.

“But I have it.”

Richard stared.

“Where did you get it?”

“My mother returned it to me before she died.”

Richard looked stunned.

“That means…”

He stopped.

Adrian leaned forward.

“Means what?”

Richard looked at Maya.

“Victoria never had the original.”

THE VOICE ON THE TAPE

They found an old cassette player in the study.

Maya inserted the tape.

Static filled the room.

Then Richard's younger voice appeared.

“Maya, if you're hearing this, I'm sorry.”

Clara covered her mouth.

The recording continued.

“You were born on November 3.”

“Your mother held you for eleven minutes.”

Maya began crying.

“Then Victoria came.”

The recording crackled.

“She told Evelyn that if she didn't surrender the baby, she would kill all four children.”

Clara whispered:

“She threatened her.”

“Yes,” Richard's voice said from the recording.

“Evelyn made a choice.”

“She gave Maya to me.”

Maya closed her eyes.

“I promised I would protect her.”

“But Victoria discovered the transfer.”

“So I created a new identity for Maya.”

“And I told everyone she had died.”

The recording stopped.

Silence.

Then another voice appeared.

Evelyn.

Clara immediately recognized it.

“If you're hearing this, my little girl…”

Maya began sobbing.

“I didn't abandon you.”

“I loved you every second.”

“And if one day you find your brothers and sister, tell them something for me.”

The recording paused.

Then Evelyn said:

“Tell them I never stopped looking for them.”

The tape ended.

Maya covered her face.

Clara walked over.

She wrapped her arms around her.

Maya collapsed against her.

For the first time in twenty-three years, two sisters held each other.

THE WARNING

The moment they separated, Olivia's phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

No one spoke.

Then a distorted voice said:

“Check the fifth file.”

Olivia frowned.

“What?”

“The fifth file.”

“Who is this?”

“Someone who wants you alive.”

The call ended.

Olivia looked at Adrian.

“Dad…”

“What?”

“Someone just called.”

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

“What did they say?”

Olivia repeated the message.

Adrian looked at Richard.

“The fifth file.”

Richard's face changed.

“What?”

“You know something.”

“No.”

Adrian stood.

“Dad.”

“I destroyed it.”

“What?”

“The fifth file.”

Richard looked terrified.

“I destroyed every copy.”

Maya slowly stood.

“Then why does someone want us to find it?”

Nobody answered.

Then Noah spoke.

“Because maybe it wasn't destroyed.”

THE ROOM UNDER THE CHAPEL

They returned to St. Martha's Chapel.

Noah remembered another passage.

“There was a second basement.”

Adrian looked at him.

“Under the archive?”

“No.”

“Then where?”

“Under the altar.”

They moved the stone.

A narrow staircase appeared.

The air below was cold.

They descended.

At the bottom was a steel door.

No lock.

No handle.

Only a fingerprint scanner.

Adrian touched it.

Nothing.

Clara tried.

Nothing.

Maya stepped forward.

The scanner lit green.

ACCESS GRANTED.

Everyone froze.

Maya stared at her hand.

“I've never been here.”

Noah whispered:

“But the room knows you.”

The door opened.

Inside was a single desk.

A single chair.

And one file.

Nothing else.

On the cover:

MAYA — FINAL SUBJECT

Maya slowly picked it up.

Inside was a photograph.

Not of her as a baby.

Of her as an adult.

Taken only weeks earlier.

Maya stared.

“Someone has been following me.”

Adrian took the photograph.

Behind Maya in the picture stood a man.

Adrian zoomed in.

His face became pale.

“I know him.”

Clara looked at him.

“Who?”

Adrian turned the photograph around.

“Samuel Carter.”

Maya froze.

“My adoptive father?”

Adrian nodded.

“But he died three years ago.”

Adrian stared at the image.

“No.”

He pointed at the photograph.

“He was alive when this was taken.”

THE MAN WHO RAISED MAYA

Maya couldn't breathe.

“My father?”

Adrian nodded.

“Someone photographed you with him.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“He died in front of me.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

“Hospital?”

“Yes.”

“Death certificate?”

“Yes.”

“Did you see the body?”

Maya hesitated.

“No.”

Adrian looked at Richard.

“Another fake death.”

Richard nodded.

“That was Victoria's specialty.”

Maya backed away.

“So my entire life…”

“Was constructed,” Richard said.

Maya stared at him.

“Who am I?”

Richard answered:

“You're Evelyn's daughter.”

“I know that.”

“You're Clara's sister.”

“I know.”

“You're Noah and Ethan's sister.”

“I know.”

“And…”

He looked at Adrian.

“You are connected to him too.”

Adrian frowned.

“How?”

Richard didn't answer.

Maya looked confused.

“Why would I be connected to Adrian?”

Richard whispered:

“Because your biological father wasn't Evelyn's husband.”

The room went silent.

Clara looked at Adrian.

Adrian stared at Richard.

“Then who?”

Richard slowly pointed toward him.

“Adrian.”

Adrian's face went blank.

“What?”

Richard nodded.

“You were seventeen.”

“You and Clara were together.”

“You had Emma.”

“And then, before anyone knew what happened…”

“Clara became pregnant again.”

Adrian's eyes widened.

“Maya.”

Richard nodded.

“Maya is your daughter.”

THE IMPOSSIBLE TIMELINE

Clara stepped backward.

“No.”

Richard nodded.

“Yes.”

“But Maya is twenty-three.”

“Yes.”

“Emma is twenty-four.”

“Yes.”

“That means…”

“You had two pregnancies.”

Clara's face went pale.

Adrian whispered:

“Twins?”

Richard shook his head.

“No.”

“Then what?”

“Emma was born first.”

“Then Maya?”

“Yes.”

Clara looked at Maya.

“But I don't remember.”

Richard's eyes filled with regret.

“Because you were drugged again.”

Clara closed her eyes.

The memories returned.

The hospital.

The second birth.

A baby's cry.

A woman taking her away.

Victoria.

Then Vanessa.

And another face.

A young Eleanor.

Clara opened her eyes.

“Your mother helped them.”

Adrian froze.

“My mother?”

Richard nodded.

“Eleanor believed she was protecting you.”

Clara looked horrified.

“She took my daughter.”

“She thought she was saving her.”

“No.”

Clara shook her head.

“She stole her.”

Richard said nothing.

THE FIFTH CHILD'S SECRET

Maya opened the file.

There was one final document.

A DNA analysis.

The father:

ADRIAN WHITMORE

The mother:

CLARA BENNETT

The child:

MAYA BENNETT

But beneath the report was another line.

GENETIC STATUS: UNIQUE

Adrian frowned.

“What does unique mean?”

Richard looked away.

Maya asked:

“What did I inherit?”

Richard didn't answer.

Adrian grabbed his shoulder.

“What did she inherit?”

Richard finally whispered:

“The complete genetic sequence.”

Adrian stared.

“Of what?”

“The Harper experiments.”

Silence.

Richard continued:

“Victoria spent decades searching for the missing sequence.”

“And Maya has it?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Evelyn carried the original mutation.”

Adrian looked at Clara.

“And Clara?”

“Clara inherited half.”

“Noah?”

“Half.”

“Ethan?”

“Half.”

“But Maya…”

“Had both.”

Maya stared at the document.

“So I'm the reason they hunted us.”

Richard nodded.

“Yes.”

“And Emma?”

“She was the key to identifying the sequence.”

Adrian finally understood.

Emma was the evidence.

Maya was the genetic key.

Clara was the carrier.

And the other children were living proof.

Victoria hadn't been trying to destroy one family.

She had been trying to control an entire bloodline.

THE FIFTH MESSAGE

Suddenly, every light in the basement went out.

Clara grabbed Emma.

Adrian reached for his phone.

Nothing.

No signal.

Then the old computer on the desk turned on.

A message appeared.

YOU FOUND HER.

Another line.

NOW BRING HER TO ME.

Then:

OR THE OTHER CHILD DIES.

Adrian's heart stopped.

He looked at Maya.

“What other child?”

The screen changed.

A live video appeared.

Ethan was tied to a chair.

His face was bruised.

Clara screamed.

“ETHAN!”

A voice spoke from behind him.

“Hello, family.”

Adrian recognized it.

Samuel Carter.

Maya's supposedly dead adoptive father.

He stepped into the camera frame.

Alive.

Smiling.

And standing beside him—

Was Eleanor.

Adrian's mother.

Clara's face turned white.

Eleanor looked directly into the camera.

“I'm sorry.”

Adrian stared.

“You?”

Eleanor whispered:

“I never stopped protecting you.”

Adrian's voice became cold.

“Then why do you have Ethan?”

Eleanor's eyes filled with tears.

“Because I made one final mistake.”

Samuel smiled.

“No.”

He corrected her.

“You made one final choice.”

He turned toward Ethan.

“And now Adrian has to make his.”

The video ended.

Adrian stared at the black screen.

Then Maya stepped forward.

“I'll go.”

Clara grabbed her.

“No.”

“He'll kill Ethan.”

“He'll kill you too.”

Maya looked at Adrian.

“Then we stop running.”

Adrian nodded.

For the first time, the entire family stood together.

Not as victims.

Not as secrets.

Not as pieces in someone else's game.

As a family.

Adrian picked up the fifth file.

“We're going to get Ethan back.”

Clara tightened her grip on Emma.

“And this time…”

Noah stepped beside them.

“…we bring everyone home.”

But none of them noticed the tiny red light blinking beneath the desk.

Someone was still watching.

And somewhere in the darkness, Samuel Carter smiled.

Because he knew something they didn't.

Ethan wasn't the final hostage.

May you like

There was still one more child.

And that child was already inside the Whitmore mansion.
