CHAPTER 1 — THE WOMAN HE SLAPPED

For several seconds after the video ended, nobody in the living room moved.

The final frame was frozen on the television.

Vanessa’s hand was extended toward the stroller.

The stroller was already tipping.

Clara was lunging forward.

And Adrian was standing there, staring at the screen as if the truth itself had physically struck him.

He could still feel the warmth in his palm.

The hand that had slapped Clara.

The woman who had saved his daughter.

His eyes slowly moved toward her.

Clara stood near the staircase, one arm wrapped protectively around Emma while tears streamed silently down her face.

She wasn't screaming.

She wasn't defending herself anymore.

She didn't have to.

The recording had done it for her.

Adrian swallowed hard.

“Clara…”

She looked at him.

That single look broke something inside him.

There was no anger in her eyes.

Only disbelief.

And hurt.

The kind of hurt that didn't need words.

Adrian took one step toward her.

“I didn't know.”

Clara's lips trembled.

“You didn't even ask.”

The words landed harder than any accusation.

Adrian stopped.

Behind them, Vanessa suddenly began crying again.

“That video doesn't show everything!”

Olivia turned sharply.

“It shows exactly what happened.”

“You don't understand!” Vanessa cried. “I was trying to—”

“Trying to what?”

Olivia's voice was colder now.

“Kill Emma?”

Vanessa's face went white.

“No!”

“Then why did you push the stroller?”

“I didn't!”

Olivia stared at her.

“You just watched yourself do it.”

Vanessa looked toward Adrian.

For years, that look had worked.

Fearful eyes.

Trembling lips.

A fragile voice.

The perfect combination to make Adrian instinctively protect her.

But this time, something was different.

Adrian didn't move toward Vanessa.

He didn't comfort her.

He simply stared.

“Why?” he asked.

Vanessa froze.

“What?”

“Why did you push the stroller?”

“I didn't mean to.”

“You said Clara pushed it.”

“I panicked!”

“You lied.”

Vanessa's breathing became faster.

“I was terrified!”

“So was Clara.”

Adrian pointed toward Emma.

“She ran toward my daughter.”

His voice cracked.

“And I slapped her.”

Silence.

Clara lowered her eyes.

Adrian looked at his hand.

Then at her face.

“I am sorry.”

Clara said nothing.

“Clara, I'm—”

“Don't.”

Her voice was barely audible.

Adrian stopped.

She gently handed Emma to Olivia.

Then she turned away.

“Where are you going?” Adrian asked.

“Home.”

“You can't leave like this.”

Clara laughed once.

It wasn't a happy sound.

“Like what, Adrian?”

She turned back.

“Like the woman your husband just accused of trying to murder his own child?”

“You know that's not what I—”

“That is exactly what you did.”

Adrian had no answer.

Clara wiped her tears.

“I've spent months trying to earn your trust.”

Her voice shook.

“I cooked for your family. I took care of Emma when she had a fever. I stayed awake when you were traveling. I learned every little thing she needed.”

She looked at Emma.

“And today, when she was falling, I didn't think. I just ran.”

Her eyes returned to Adrian.

“And you thanked me by hitting me.”

Adrian's face collapsed.

“I was wrong.”

“You were.”

“I'll make it right.”

Clara shook her head.

“You can't undo it.”

Then she walked toward the front door.

Adrian followed.

“Clara, please.”

She stopped with her hand on the doorknob.

For one moment, Adrian thought she might turn around.

Instead, she whispered:

“You should have believed me before you believed a lie.”

Then she walked out.

The door closed.

Adrian stood motionless.

Olivia watched him.

“Dad.”

He didn't respond.

“Dad.”

“What?”

“You need to look at something else.”

Adrian turned.

“What else?”

Olivia held up her phone.

“There was another camera.”

Adrian's stomach tightened.

“What?”

“The camera outside the house.”

His eyes narrowed.

“Why didn't you show me that?”

“Because I didn't know what was on it.”

She hesitated.

“Until now.”

Adrian walked toward her.

Olivia opened the security application.

The exterior camera showed the driveway.

Timestamp:

3:17 PM.

Vanessa arrived.

She stepped out of a black SUV.

She looked around before entering the house.

Then the recording jumped forward.

3:26 PM.

Vanessa walked toward the nursery.

Another jump.

3:41 PM.

Clara entered carrying Emma.

Then came the moment everyone already knew.

But Olivia didn't stop there.

She dragged the timeline backward.

“Look at this.”

Adrian leaned closer.

“What am I looking for?”

“Vanessa.”

“She enters the nursery.”

“Yes.”

“So?”

“She didn't come out for eleven minutes.”

Adrian frowned.

“And?”

Olivia zoomed in.

Vanessa wasn't holding anything when she entered.

But when she emerged…

She was holding a small black envelope.

Adrian stared at it.

“What is that?”

“I don't know.”

Olivia enlarged the image.

The resolution was poor.

But there was something written across the front.

Three words.

Adrian's face changed.

He knew that handwriting.

He had seen it many times.

It belonged to his father.

PROPERTY TRANSFER DOCUMENTS.

His blood ran cold.

“My father?”

Olivia nodded slowly.

“I think Vanessa was looking for something.”

Adrian stared at the screen.

“My father died two years ago.”

“I know.”

“He left everything to me.”

“I know that too.”

Adrian's eyes moved back to the frozen image.

Vanessa was standing outside the nursery with the envelope in her hand.

“What would she want with my father's documents?”

Olivia didn't answer.

Because suddenly, another thought occurred to both of them.

A much darker one.

Maybe Vanessa hadn't come to the house that afternoon because of Emma.

Maybe Emma had simply been in the way.

Adrian immediately picked up his phone.

“I need to call the security company.”

Olivia grabbed his arm.

“Wait.”

“What?”

“There's more.”

She opened another file.

A deleted recording.

The timestamp was only a few minutes before the stroller incident.

Adrian stared at the screen.

“Where did you get that?”

“I recovered it from the backup server.”

“Play it.”

Olivia pressed the button.

The screen went black.

Then the image appeared.

Vanessa was standing in the hallway.

She wasn't crying.

She wasn't frightened.

She was speaking to someone.

A man.

Only his back was visible.

Adrian leaned toward the television.

The man's voice was muffled.

But Vanessa's voice was clear.

“Everything has to happen today.”

Adrian's breathing stopped.

The man said something.

Olivia increased the volume.

“…if Adrian finds out…”

Vanessa interrupted.

“He won't.”

The man looked toward the nursery.

“And the girl?”

Vanessa's face hardened.

“She's the reason we have to do it now.”

Adrian's blood turned cold.

Olivia slowly turned toward him.

“Dad…”

The recording continued.

Vanessa whispered:

“Once Adrian believes Clara is dangerous, he'll get rid of her himself.”

Adrian stared at the screen.

His chest tightened.

Then the man said something that made the entire room go silent.

“After Clara is gone, we take the baby.”

Adrian's face drained of color.

“No.”

Olivia covered her mouth.

The recording ended.

For several seconds, neither of them spoke.

Then Adrian whispered:

“They weren't trying to frame Clara.”

Olivia looked at him.

“They were trying to remove her.”

“And take Emma.”

Olivia nodded.

Adrian's hands began to shake.

Suddenly, every strange detail from the past few months returned.

Vanessa appearing whenever Clara was alone with Emma.

Vanessa insisting that Clara was irresponsible.

Vanessa telling Adrian that Clara was becoming emotionally unstable.

Vanessa repeatedly suggesting that Emma would be safer without Clara around.

It hadn't been jealousy.

It had been preparation.

Adrian grabbed his jacket.

“Where are you going?”

“To find Clara.”

“Why?”

“Because she's in danger.”

He rushed toward the door.

Then stopped.

His phone rang.

Unknown number.

Adrian answered.

“Hello?”

Nothing.

“Who is this?”

A woman's voice whispered:

“Adrian…”

He froze.

“Who are you?”

“You don't know me.”

“What do you want?”

“I know what Vanessa is planning.”

Adrian's heart slammed against his ribs.

“Where is Clara?”

The woman went silent.

Then:

“She's not the one you should be protecting.”

Adrian frowned.

“What does that mean?”

A pause.

Then the woman whispered:

“Your daughter was never supposed to survive today.”

The call ended.

Adrian stared at the phone.

Olivia's face went pale.

“What happened?”

Adrian looked at her.

For the first time in his life, Olivia saw genuine fear in her father's eyes.

“Call the police.”

“Dad…”

“Now.”

Outside, several streets away, Clara walked alone beneath the fading afternoon light.

She had barely made it two blocks before she stopped.

Her phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

She almost ignored it.

Then a message appeared.

YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE SAVED THE BABY.

Clara stared at the screen.

Another message arrived.

NOW THEY KNOW YOU'RE IN THE WAY.

Her fingers went numb.

Then came the final message.

RUN.

Clara looked behind her.

A black SUV was slowly approaching.

And she recognized the vehicle.

It was Vanessa's.

Clara stepped backward.

The SUV stopped.

The passenger window rolled down.

But Vanessa wasn't inside.

A man looked out.

Clara's heart pounded.

Then he smiled.

“Clara?”

She didn't answer.

The man opened the door.

“Get in.”

Clara turned and ran.

Behind her, the man's voice became louder.

“Clara!”

She ran faster.

And for the first time, she understood something Adrian had not yet realized.

The stroller incident had never been the real attack.

It had only been the beginning.
